Out of Step (With the World) Lyrics
(I) Don't smoke
Don't drink
Don't fuck
At least I can fucking think

I can't keep up
Can't keep up
Can't keep up
Out of step with the world

Minor Threat really kicked off the straight edge culture with this song. It's the whole philosophy that the youth should be focusing on things more important than drugs, such as society.

"Straight-edge refers to a philosophy that's most basic tenets promote a drug free lifestyle. It developed as an offshoot of the punk rock/hardcore scenes of the early 1980's when the term itself is believed to have been coined by Ian Mackaye, in the self titled song, while he was the singer of the seminal hardcore band, Minor Threat. Mackaye eschewed the nihilistic tendencies of punk rock, promoting instead the simple (almost simplistic) philosophy of "don't drink/ don't smoke/ don't fuck." " --- From straight-edge.com

These are the real lyrics to the song, with the part where the lead singer is talking about sXe ...

Don't smoke
I Don't drink
I Don't fuck
At least I can fucking think

I can't keep up
Can't keep up
Can't keep up
Out of step with the world

Don't smoke
I Don't drink
I Don't fuck
At least I can fucking think

I can't keep up
Can't keep up
Can't keep up
Out of step with the world

Listen, this is no set of rules
I'm not tellin' you what to do
All i'm saying is i'm bringing up
Three things that, are like, so important to the world
I don't find much importance in
because of these things
whether they're fuckin'
or whether they're playin' golf
because of that i feel ....

I can't keep up
Can't keep up
Can't keep up
Out of step with the world

Pretty self-explanitory. Three short steps to healthy living and a positive attitude. How many times I've wanted to scream this at someone that asked me to get high with them or for a cigarette. Or everytime someone tells me how drunk they got at a party and had sex with someone, but didn't know too. "YOU DON'T DRINK AND FUCK RANDOM GIRLS, YOU MUST BE A FAG!" I don't know, I guess I'm just a romantic.

When Ian wrote this song, the rest of the band was kinda pissed at him, because they felt he was being far too preachy, and was testifying instead of leading. The rest of the band weren't actually straight-edge, but everybody just assumed they were. They felt that Ian's lyrics were just outlining new rules for all his fans, lots of whom would follow whatever Ian said, and they didn't like it. Ian was actually just outlining his own philosophies, but since he IS kinda preachy (not always a bad thing) that's just how it came out. There was a big fight, and he ended up adding in the "(I)" at the beginning as a compromise, so the song wouldn't sound so much like it was telling people how to live their lives.

This is a good song and Minor Threat is dope. I like them even though i'm not sXE.

It should also be noted that Ian MacKaye drinks now. So much for the total sXe but he's probably a good guy as long as he doesn't still outline his philosophy as to not drink.

Sometimes i wonder if my obsession with d.c. hardcore has anything to do with the music at all, or if it's just because it's the only music i've found that expresses my opinions on the subject. Either ian and i are crazy, or everyone else is, but i relate to this song probably more than any other song ever.

Ian Mackaye was also the lead singer of Black Flag, another punk band popular around this time.

Apart from being in Minor Threat and Fugazi, Ian Mackaye was also the bassist and main writer for Teen Idles (a punk band he was in while still in high school before he formed Minor Threat and Dischord records) as well as Embrace (following Minor THreat but before Fugazi). Embrace has been called the first emo-core band.

Ian has also been cited as the godfather of hardcore. I disagree. Joey Shithead of DOA (a Canadian hardcore punk group) is the godfather of hardcore. DOA formed in 1978 (prior to this Joey had been in another punk group called the Skulls) while Minor THreat didn't form until 1980. I've talked to other punk rock fans who agree with me. DOA has shared the stage with Minor Threat. Read I SHITHEAD by Joey Shithead Keithly for more info on that

in the revised edition of "out of step" he added at the end "this is no set of rules...etc", he didnt mean to give edge people a set of rules, he mean "I dont smoke, I dont drink etc"

whats with all this bull shit about ian starting to drink? Show me a pic or a link.. I hear all kinds of crazy crap from people and from all the interviews I read with him, he's still straight edge.. Oh, and why would you listen to straight edge music, preaching straight edge, if you aren't? Might as well go listen to like britany spears if the lyrics mean shit to you.

I'm agreeing with MustKilltheWeak about how retarded it is to listen to Minor Threat if you are not straight-edge. It just confirms the fact that you couldn't give two fucks about the message Ian was trying to portray. Which in itself is a huge insult to Ian. It probably goes the same for any music you listen to, which begs the question, "Why do you listen to punk in the first place?" Are you just trying to be trendy? Huh? No? You sure, huh? Not a little, huh? No? Anyways, I hope to see the day dumbasses will no longer listen to good music with a meaning.

I listen to bands who play great music with power and emotion. Sometimes I agree with the messege sometimes I don't. I agree with Minor Threats DIY attitude and that we shouldn't let trivial shit take precedence over the real important things, I just don't agree with straight edge, I drink, I smoke and I fuck but I can fucking think aswell. Unlike the last two posters who will probably never listen or view anything challenging becase it isn't SxE. Why do you listen to punk and hardcore when you can't think for yourself and label yourself into a little category? Is it to feel elite? Huh? No? You sure, huh? Not a little, huh? No?

violentpacifist i agree with you that the two posters are tards and labels are stupid. any way i think ian would agree alot with the transcendentalists. he lives by his beliefs and what he thinks not the world. i am deff sXe but i was before i started listen to minor threat and knew there was a name for it. but like other people i like being able to relate and when ever i really pissed at the world i'll drive around listen to minor threat or fugazi.

for those of you who think its hypocritical to listen to Minor Threat and not be sXe, you people should know that the other dudes in the band weren't sXe. I think Brian smoked weed and I know the other guys were down with drinking

Leatpunk and mustkilltheweak you are both fucking morons. I am not edge, I listen to Minor Threat purely because I love the MUSIC they make, and the raw emotion in it.

I'm sure Ian would be ashamed of the asshole fans trying to sound superior. Jesus christ, who the fuck are you to tell me what I should be listening to?

Fucking cunts.
