Lyrics for Sorrow as interpreted by Zekethesweetpeak

Sorrow Lyrics
Father can you hear me?
How have I let you down?
I curse the day that I was born
And all the sorrow in this world

Let me take you to the hurting ground
Where all good men are trampled down
Just to settle a bet that could not be won
Between a prideful father and his son
Will you guide me now, for I can't see
A reason for the suffering and this long misery
What if every living soul could be upright and strong
Well, then I do imagine

There will be sorrow
Yeah, there will be sorrow
And there will be sorrow, no more

When all soldiers lay their weapons down
Or when all kings and all queens relinquish their crowns
Or when the only true messiah rescues us from ourselves
It's easy to imagine

There will be sorrow
Yeah, there will be sorrow
And there will be sorrow, no more

I'm in Sacramento, and I rarely listen to the radio, but I do know that they play Sorrow on the rock station here, KWOD 106.5. It should come as no suprise to anyone that if they are getting airtime in one place, chances are they are getting airtime all over the country. Bad Religion has been around for years, and anyone that has been listening to punk most of their life probably considers BR one of the most influencial punk bands of all time. They were my first punk band in the fifth grade and will always be my favorite. Even if BR starts getting played on the radio all the time, I highly doubt they will become main stream, let alone "sell out." BR's music and lyrics aren't the kind of stuff "teenyboppers" are drawn to. So have no fear BR fans, I think they're in the clear.

this song's a little too mainstream. pretty good lyrics tho great message. anti-war. people say wihtout sorrow and suffering there could be no happiness but tell that to those who suffer.

abirdnamedsloth, thank you for the analysis, very cool. I think there should be two seperate forums for each song, one for analysis (songmeaning) and one for general discussion (where the song plays, how good it is, etc.) I mean i respect everyone's right to post but i wish i could just go right to some people's great insight like as shown here...good work

Abirdnamedsloth is dead right, I read that exact same article and that's exactly what they said. To all those gays saying that if they're played on the radio they'll sell out. Grow.Up. Who cares? Does that make you less hardcore does it. I think you'll find that makes you the sell out dropping your band because they found fame. Listen to Five Iron Frenzy - Handbook For The Sellout and you'll see yourself described.

Five Iron, in many ways, is very similar to BR. Sometimes freakingly similar. Anyway, Sorrow, what a great song. I didn't see the Job connection at first, but now that it has been pointed out to me, it is quite clear. ROCKIN!

How I relate: Father can you hear me? My father didn't know I exsisted half the time I was there. How have I let you down? I don't know what I did, but my father had a strong dislike towards me. I curse the day that I was born... I have never had really loving parents, or a family so when I was younger I cursed the day that I was born because I didn't fit in. And all the sorrow in this world... yin and yang. If there is something good there is also bad.

I think A-Global-Warning is right! if you listen carefully, when It goes "And there will be..." right after the "be" there is a gunshot noise! I never noticed that before...

The song is loosely based on the story of Job. Bad Religion does this alot, they take stories out of the Bible that supposedly teach us lessons when in fact they actually paint a picture of human misery perpetuated by our belief in God. In this song he criticizing man's often zealous devotion to power, status and their beliefs. The problem is not that they have power or are of a certain faith or status, but how we wield them. Job was zealously devoted to God and this not only brought suffering to himself but others as well.

FIF is kinda the Christian Ska BR, in a sense. Of course, FIF is more light-hearted. Both great bands. It's a shame FIF's disbanding, though.

most people think this is a happy song, but in my opinion, its says that there will always be sorrow. those things mentioned will never happen. also, i believe its about god/satan ect as already previously mentioned. Good song. Love it. Its beautiful.

They haven't sold out...Just because Greg's voice has changed since he was 17 does not mean he sold out. He's sounded the same and Bad Religion has sounded the same since Suffer if you ask me. Their newest album TESF, was an attempt at becoming more mainstream because they felt they really needed to get the message out about Bush, which is what the whole album was intended to do.

The Process Of Belief, comparitevly, SUCKED ASS. BUT, despite that, this is the BEST song they ever made, the other two good ones from that album are Bored And Extremely Dangerous, and Shattered Faith (Bonus Track)

A lot of people said the meaning of this song is easy to understand. Obviously not. First of all there are tons of people who in my opinion don't get it AT ALL (in other words have interpretations that don't relate to mine), and then there are people like me who get the jist but still don't fully understand.

anyway, this is my interpretation:

I think it's criticizing the teachings of the bible and putting responsibility on ourselves for "all the sorrow in this world". Suffering is part of the human condition, nothing justifies it. We are the only ones who do anything about it, and shouldn't wait for divine intervention to take the burden off our shoulders.

One thing I don't think the song recognizes is that no matter what we do, bad things WILL happen to 'good' people. There will be drought and famon and disease and hurricanes. Job's suffering didn't only come from society, it came from nature, which (in theory) is controlled by God.

On the other hand the dealings between God and Satan in the Job story are very human. What kind of God would use that kind of sick human logic? ( Sick logic = this person has been loyal to me so now i'm going to screw him to prove his loyalty).

One created by humans I guess. I have no conclusion.

i got this album the day it came out and i let one of my non punk friends listen to it and he hated it and then like when it started being on the radio and on mtv2 he went around telling people that he always loved them and shit like that and that he always thought that song was great we need to keep bad religion to ourselves and not share it with the undeserving little twofaced cunts who just follow whats popular but yeah like iv heard this song once on my alternative station here in columbus ohio CD101 which is the only non clear channel station in town and i thought that was cool cause they just kinda let you hear it once and get hooked on it and you know the band and the album but it wasnt overplayed at all and then they kinda didnt play it anymore and by the way if you dont have it go out and buy No Control you wont be dissappointed
