No. "a gas" is an idiom from an earlier generation that essentially means to have fun (think about gas--light, floating on air, etc.). But I'm not totally sure that the real lyrics don't say aghast. And she definitely says "I had a heart of glass."
no, the lyric is "and it was a gas" - like you said "gas" means "intoxicating" in this context.<br /> <br /> and in the final verse the lyric is "soon turned out to be a pain in the ass" - the first two times she says "heart of glass", and there was a "radio" version that used the "heart of glass" verse again because "ass" was too "edgy" for radio stations to play back in the 70s, but this is the official version listed here.
