Lyrics for "Heroes" as interpreted by magicnudiesuit

"Heroes" Lyrics
I, I will be king
And you, you will be queen
Though nothing will drive them away
We can beat them, just for one day
We can be heroes, just for one day

And you, you can be mean
And I, I'll drink all the time
'Cause we're lovers, and that is a fact
Yes we're lovers, and that is that

Though nothing, will keep us together
We could steal time, just for one day
We can be heroes, for ever and ever
What d'you say?

I, I wish you could swim
Like the dolphins, like dolphins can swim
Though nothing, nothing will keep us together
We can beat them, for ever and ever
Oh we can be heroes, just for one day

I, I will be king
And you, you will be queen
Though nothing will drive them away
We can be heroes, just for one day
We can be us, just for one day

I, I can remember (I remember)
Standing, by the wall (by the wall)
And the guns, shot above our heads (over our heads)
And we kissed, as though nothing could fall (nothing could fall)
And the shame, was on the other side
Oh we can beat them, for ever and ever
Then we could be heroes, just for one day

We can be heroes
We can be heroes
We can be heroes
Just for one day
We can be heroes

We're nothing, and nothing will help us
Maybe we're lying, then you better not stay
But we could be safer, just for one day

Oh-oh-oh-ohh, oh-oh-oh-ohh, just for one day

David Bowie was recording a new album in Berlin, Germany when he wrote this song. Apparently he saw, looking out of the recording studio window, a man and woman getting intimate on the infamous Berlin wall. The Berlin wall was heavily guarded, hence "The guns shot over our heads".

This is what all the emo singers are copying off of when they try to sing all emotional/screamy. Bowie kicks their ass at it, obviously.

Also, why are there extra lyrics on here? Are they from the Moulin Rouge soundtrack? Were these originally in the song, or were they added on for Moulin Rouge? If they were added on for Moulin Rouge, then this doesn't belong on here.

This is the full version on the album, aphekgs.

I wouldn't call it a happy song at all. The last verse says that the forces keeping the lovers apart are stronger than they are and admits they can only settle for being "safer". (The title is actually supposed to be in quotes; I think that's why.)

As far as the extra words, aphekgs, Ana Byrd is right: the single version, which is the version that ends up on the most compilations and such, cuts the first two verses and makes the song about 3-1/2 minutes as opposed to more than 6 on the album. The thing about the quotes is also true: though it's fully noble and well that the people still love each other, they're not really succeeding, so they're only "heroes."

I've also heard it said that the people standing at the Berlin Wall were Tony Visconti and his girlfriend, Tony being an excellent producer who worked with Bowie on a load of albums, including The Man Who Sold the World, Young Americans, Scary Montsters and Super Creeps, the Berlin trilogy and his two latest.

Love conquers all. This song is amazing, and knowing the story behind it I went to Berlin and was singing it the whole time I was walking the line of the former wall. The thoughts it invoked sent chills up my spine.

man. this song makes you feel so much. yeaH it's def supposed to be "heroes" which changes it. i think it's interesting how sometimes he's like "we can be heroes for ever and ever "and other times it's all "we can be heroes just for one day"

I agree with the other reviewers - it's about how love conquers all.
I forget who copied this song in the late 90s but they should have left it alone. The original Bowie version is incredible. Love that freaky guitar provided by Robert Fripp! Some songs just shouldn't be covered and this is one of them!

Ewan Mcgregor kills this song in Moulin Rouge. He sings it completely different, and it can never compete with bowie.

Bowie played this song at Live Aid in 1985. What a concept. We can be heroes....if just for one day. Wow. This song more than any other talks about the power of the individual. At least it did to me.

I think this song is more downbeat, perhaps even cynical than people think. Yes these people love each other - but it's them against the world, and as the deliberate quotation marks around the word heroes suggests, perhaps its a futile gesture in a relentless society.

No matter how much they argue or don't get on ("you will be mean and I will drink all the time"), the love overcomes it. Even if it's just for one day. Even though nothing will keep them together forever, they can beat the typical way the world works when you chuck a lover who you argue with. The're going against that because the're so in love. They'll be heroes for doing so, just for one day.

I had always gotten the image of two people against the world, and Lord knows, I have felt that way myself more than once.
So very "Atlas Shrugged".

While on the surface this can be seen simply as a uplifting "Let's Take On the World" anthem, the genius in this song can be attributed to the quotation marks. With the clear reference to the Berlin Wall and the conquering of oppression by love, there is a sad and cynical twist upon the realization the same love can make us feel like heroes, but we can only really be "heroes" as we are can be oppressed by forces we cannot easily defeat. The beauty and exhilaration of love can make everything seem to be paradise, yet at the root it is bittersweet as most can never be real heroes, but are mainly parts to the machine.

And when we are all mostly parts of the machine, the dehumanization of society has resulted into turning the Modern Man into something less than human. When we are controlled by so many other forces, many of which are not driven by real human desires such as love and art, but are instead driven by the machine-like goals of materialism. As humans become more machine love becomes less genuine and the quotations perhaps indicate a more cynical commentary of the lack of real love in a relentless and mechanical zeitgesit.
