Lyrics for Changes as interpreted by magicnudiesuit

Changes Lyrics
Oh yeah
Mm
Still don’t know what I was waiting for
And my time was running wild
A million dead-end streets and
Every time I thought I’d got it made
It seemed the taste was not so sweet
So I turned myself to face me
But I’ve never caught a glimpse
Of how the others must see the faker
I’m much too fast to take that test

Ch-ch-ch-ch-changes
(turn and face the strain)
Ch-ch-changes
Don’t want to be a richer man
Ch-ch-ch-ch-changes
(turn and face the strain)
Ch-ch-changes
Just gonna have to be a different man
Time may change me
But I can’t trace time

I watch the ripples change their size
But never leave the stream
Of warm impermanence
So the days float through my eyes
But stil the days seem the same
And these children that you spit on
As they try to change their worlds
Are immune to your consultations
They’re quite aware of what they’re going through

Ch-ch-ch-ch-changes
(turn and face the strain)
Ch-ch-changes
Don’t tell them to grow up and out of it
Ch-ch-ch-ch-changes
(turn and face the strain)
Ch-ch-changes
Where’s your shame
You’ve left us up to our necks in it
Time may change me
But you can’t trace time

Strange fascination, fascinating me
Ah changes are taking the pace I’m going through

Ch-ch-ch-ch-changes
(turn and face the strain)
Ch-ch-changes
Oh, look out you rock ’n rollers
Ch-ch-ch-ch-changes
(turn and face the strain)
Ch-ch-changes
Pretty soon now you’re gonna get a little older
Time may change me
But I can’t trace time
I said that time may change me
But I can’t trace time

a fun thing to do with this song. play it in your car, roll down all the windows and when the refrain starts (ch-ch-ch-changes!) turn the volume all the way up and freak some people out with your crazy david bowie songage.

Why would people make fun of you for loving this song? It kicks ass. Oh, I guess it's not cool to like anything but fucking Good Charlotte or some shit.

This is one hell of an amazing song, because you can change the chorus to remind you of things to have to do that we -- seriously!
"Tu-tu-tu-tu-TUESDAY!
(Time for Driver's Ed)
Tu-tu-TUESDAY!
Don't forget to use the turn signal!"

Time might change me.
But I can't change time.
Is it trace? I always thought is was change. That would make more sense I would think...hmm...

Like sbroxmysox1991 I always thought it was change too....but when I realized it was trace I liked it even more. Probably simply because the idea of tracing time can go so much further than actually changing time.

it is traces, the main reason it sounds like changes is probably because thats the name and theme of the entire song but traces fits and thats what you'll hear if you turn the treble up really high and bass down low.
and i must say this is a great Bowie song but not his best. Moonage Daydream is a must have along with RockNroll suicide and 1984

wonderful song, and timeless. I think it's about growing up and doing wild things, but you don't really have time to watch or notice what you're doing, or it doesn't occur to you. then when you're older you're upset about the youth that does the same thing that you once did. And also, that you have no control over it, no matter what you do. The cool thing is...it's usually a negative subject, but he just points out the irony with a bit of underlying humor..to hell what I think though, it's an awesome song....

Did anyone else notice that in the beginning of the breakfast club they have this quote?
I thought that was awesome, since the movie is about change.
Bowie is a God.

Of all the lines in any David Bowie song, there is nothing that sticks in my mind more than:

"And these children that you spit on
As they try to change their worlds
Are immune to your consultations
They're quite aware of what they're going through"

When I was a teeny bopper, I didn't understand it. Now that i'm older, around 25, I find myself on the opposite end of that comment - I mostly depise teenagers.. and I like to spit on teenagers, when I'm not running them over in my Volvo (i.e. in America, where I am from duh!)... Because they so painlessly seek sex and drugs (and rocknroll), and seem to be offended by the idea of wisdom (and rocknroll).

End result, a guy like me just wonders, as people have expected for the past 5000 years, that society is in decline.. Then teenagers who can't read or think reply with "500 years ago, people thought teenagers would ruin society too, and it never happened" or something along those lines..

But of course, that's an empty thing to say, or course bad things happened... I mean.. thousands of passionate wars have been fought and 100 million Jews were killed in concentration camps, and eventually, perhaps America will no longer exist - and the young seem to have no interest in keeping that from happening.

With all due respect to David Bowie.. he is a man who had a lot of heart.. an introspective man.. who has brought visions to me that I value and cherish.. Again, unfortunately, I never got the Jap girls in synthesis - the one vision I would have like the most..

But that line above particularly bothers me, because it sort of says to me that there is an "us" and a "them", and me and David Bowie are on different sides.. Instead of basically saying "they are immune to my bullshit", it would have been nice if he could have bridged our differences with some thoughtful discourse...

But then again.. Well.. Differences... Sometimes it is exactly those differences that makes a music provocative.. His song provokes me.. I don't know if that's good.. But surely puts the music is up there in the ranks..

i think its kinda like hes looking back on being the rock and roll wild child and changing his ways. kicking off the drugs (apparentely drugs of certain types can cause stutters, explanging his choice of ch-ch-ch in the chorus, kind of like an in-joke). "still dont know what i was waiting for" i look back now and i dont understand it now any more than i did then...something like that

hahaha. "you're moron" anyway... I've always liked this song since i was a young'n just cause it sounded good(way back i thought it was "turn the bass to string"). And now that i'm older, i love the song even more for the lyrics.

Though it pains me to be affiliated with him in any way, the lyrics that student so expertly discussed happen to be my favorite as well. Being 16, i despise adult guidance/advice forced upon me, even though I know most of it would be beneficial to follow. A major part of growing up is being rebellious and questioning what is accepted as we mature and try to find our place in society. It's primarily a personal journey and I'd rather make some mistakes along the way then have the adults in my life breathing down my neck all the time to make sure i turn out alright. whatever happens, happens. that's life.

Bowie perfectly illustrates that in the this, as noted before, timeless song. It may have came out long ago, but I connect with it greatly and young punks of many generations to come are sure to as well.

Oh, and f@#% good charlotte. I listened to them pre-TRL days and they were mediocre at best then. Nowadays, they are just god awful market researched poo. I always wondered how they were so popular and now the truth has finally been revealed this week; they really aren't. Sony's been bribing radio stations to play that crap for years. That is some skeezy sh**.

This is why i spent the money to get a line-in jack in my car so i can listen to my 30gb corporate corruptionless collection of bowie, sufjan stevens, MF Doom, and other amazing artists wherever i go. Ahh, feels good just thinking about it.

I don't think this song is really a rebel influenced message about fuckin authority figures or any angstish things. I think highlydubious was correct in saying that you have no controll over time and the changes that it brings. I don't want to try and analyze the real meaning of the song cause I really can't, but I don't think it's about deciding to change your bad ways. I think it's more about just being able to change and not getting stuck in one time. "look out you rock n rollers" Many rockers to get stuck in their period and their style (unllike bowie) he's always changing himself ,not to blend with the times, but just to develop.

Great song, but according to my Hunky Dory liner notes, the lyric is "turn and face the strain", not "stranger".

saturnalia9 actually, if you listen carefully he says "Turn and face the strange changes" the "ge" is very faint but with the volume up you can hear it.

change is inevitable in life and we should be open to change instead of avoiding and hating it. The old people spit on the kids in the new generation because they are stuck in their times. Rock N rollers get old and feel that there time has passed because the music changed.
