Lyrics for Come Join Us as interpreted by Nevett

Come Join Us Lyrics
So you say you got to know why the world goes round
And you can't find the truth in the things you've found
And you're scared shitless 'cause evil abounds

Come join us

Well I heard you were looking for a place to fit in
Full of adherent people with the same objective
A family to cling to and call brethren

Come join us

All we want to do is change your mind
All you need to do is close your eyes

Come join us
Come join us
Come join us

Don't you see all the trouble that most people are in
And that they just want you for their own advantage
But I swear to you we're different from all of them

Come join us

I can tell you are looking for a way to live
Where truth is determined by consensus
Full of codified arbitrary directives

Come join us

All we want to have is your small mind
Turn it into one of our own kind

You can go through life adrift and alone
Desperate, desolate, on your own
But we're looking for a few more stalwart clones

Come join us
Come join us
Come join us

We've got spite and dedication as a vehement brew
The world hates us, well we hate them too
But you're exempted of course if you

Come join us

Independent, self-contented, revolutionary
Intellectual, brave, strong and scholarly
If you're not one of them, you're us already so

Come join us (x5)

So you say you got to know why the world goes round
"And you can't find the truth in the things you've found
And you're scared shitless 'cause evil abounds

Come join us" - relaties to how the christian churches find the weak and scare them into beliving in God so they can 'save them' a.k.a. - they got another costomer.

So in my view, its about how churches scare people into becoming paying members.

Of COURSE this is about religion. What do you think fuels this band to continue on? It's all about how organized religion goes about with brainwashing, and telling you what you want to hear to join their cause.

You guys are SOOOOOOOOOO wrong. Greg Graffin said himself what this song meant, I thought everybody knew it. This song is about joining punk movement. That's it.... it's the only meaning....

That's a load of bull. Actually listen to the damned song, and you'll hear what it's about.

So you say you got to know why the world goes round
And you can't find the truth in the things you've found
And you're scared shitless 'cause evil abounds

Associate that with the punk movement.

Look comejoinus, I don't care, I mean, on the previous Bad Religion site, Greg Graffin wrote a pretty big text to say this song was about punk movement, he even wrote an essay, a punk manifesto, where you can see this special statement, come join us.... There's no place for arguing, I mean, it might be your meaning for the song, you can see it like that, but to greg, that's not what it means and you know what's funny? HE WROTE IT NOT YOU! COOL HUH?

If you are a new fan, I can believe you did'nt saw this text, or did not read this incredible text punk manifesto is, but if u're an old one, I can't believe it... You can even go and ask on bad Religion's message board... This song is about punk!

So you say you gotta know why the world goes around

This is about the fact that this is the reason why punk exists! idiot! To find the truth!

Is it the evil word that confuses you? U're easy to confuse, read it back, think about punk, the way the movement should be, u'll see it fits!

Oh yeahhhhhhh Busted, I found the text, I have never been right like now, you were so wrong!

This is punk manifesto and look at that

http://www.badreligion.com/news/essays.php?id=5

Look at this statement from Greg Graffin:

The "come join us" attitude that seeks to attract followers, usually results in a rabble of weak people who think that their power lies in the large numbers of like-minded clones they have compiled. There is no strength in numbers however, if the people are glued together by a short-sighted, self-serving, fear-induced mantra that promotes factions and exclusionary principles.

Come join us attitude, reminds you of something? ohhhhhhhh

crossbuster; im fairly certain that you're breaking some sort of stupidity limit. have you even read that essay?

the lyrics are pretty straight forward, but i dont think they're reffering specially to religions. it could be movements, political parties whatever.

and saying how it's easier to just be brainless and docile and brainwashed with a lot of people just like you to comfort you and make you feel secure, as opposed as going your own way and being an individual. the appeal of conformism basically.

I don't really care, you are stupid!! It's not MY meaning, it's Greg's one, he said it was about it, cause a lot of people were asking, it's not even stuff to argue on!

Quoted from crossbuster
"Look at this statement from Greg Graffin:

The "come join us" attitude that seeks to attract followers, usually results in a rabble of weak people who think that their power lies in the large numbers of like-minded clones they have compiled. Seriously, reread that quote. Greg is obviously in opposition to what the words, "Come Join Us" provoke. He states directly that he is opposed to group mentality in several of his other songs and in case you really need to understand the song, he sums up his entire message in the last stanza.

"Independent, self-contented, revolutionary
Intellectual, brave, strong and scholarly
If you're not one of them, you're us already so
Come join us"
Basically, in case you can't understand the directness of his language, if you are not intelligent, brave, independent, etc., then you are exactly what the group (Whichever of a number of groups you can choose from) is looking for. And yes, you can add the modern punk movement in there as well because punk is dead and most everyone who follows the psuedo-punks of today are fucking mindless idiots. The true spirit of punk, the search for answers as opposed to accepting blindly, is generally not found in the mainstream movements of our day.

i think its about the punk rock community, but in a clever, satirical fashion. perhaps showing the downside of an "establishment" that can be treated just like any other.

It's about organized religions seeking out the weak to turn them onto God, NOT the punk movement. I really can't see how you can relate even half the words to the punk movement...
To validate my point, have none of you seen the "Live at the Palladium" DVD? Right before Bad Religion plays this song, Greg G. says "the three most frightening words invented by any religion... COME JOIN US". He says it virtually every time before they play it... look it up on YouTube.

I think this song could be interpreted in several different ways. Organized religion is one way (even as a Christian, I can't deny that there are a lot of weak people brought into the Church to be "saved") - although the "The world hates us and we hate them" line kind of contradicts this idea, because Christianity is supposed to be about loving one another.

I think the idea of it being about the punk rock movement sounds quite legitimate. Punk rock isn't just a style of music. It's a culture. It's a way of life. Like heavy metal, it's a naturally "rebellious" genre. It rebels against notions and disproven beliefs. The "find out why the world goes around" part could imply "Discovering for yourself why the world goes around rather than necessarily believing what other people say - be it theologians or scientists." That kind of "discover and think for yourself" attitude is what punk rock is all about. It's a genre of music that's shunned upon, and home to a lot of outcasts. But it has its own, unique culture. Specifically for people who don't want to just follow some sort of crowd.

Intellectual, brave, strong and scholarly; are words that i will not describe close minded blind Christans.

Excuse me???? This is most definitely NOT about punk. Are you people fucked in the head???

It's quite obviously about religion. You should be ashamed of yourself people who said it's about punk. Punk is about individuality.

I think its about religion. About how maybe people look for religion so much because they're scared of what's going to happen to them, because "evil abounds" and because they think its easier than just knowing your dead when you die. One of my friend's who is a christian (i'm an athiest) told me she couldn't not believe because it was too depressing to think that this is it, that right now is your whole life. I think of this song like that. People want to feel good, and if religion makes them feel good and like they have a place, "brethren", then that's fine for them. It's not for me though. I think that the song is just about why people flock towards religion.

"Don't you see all the trouble that most people are in"

Is a direct insult to the surrounding society. A religios group wouldnt say that. Thats what punks are saying.

"You can go through life adrift and alone
Desperate, desolate, on your own"

Someone who beleives in a religion is not alone. Because the religious mindset has to come from somewhere, like forexample a priest.
A religoius guy is too weak to go on his own

Whereas the punk mindset doesnt has to come from somewhere. So someone with a punkmindset can be isolate and on your own.
A punk is strong enough to go on his own.

In other words this song is about punks should unite, not for the purpose of supporting the indiviual, because the individual could easily go on his own anyway, but unite, so the punk movement, as a whole, can grow stronger and have a greater voice.
