"Fast car" is kind of a continuation of Bruce Springsteen's "Born to Run." It has all the clawing your way to a better life, but in this case the protagonist never makes it with her love; in fact she is dragged back down by him.
There is still an amazing amount of hope and will in the lyrics; and the lyrics themselve rank and easy five. If only music was stronger it would be one of those great radio songs that you hear once a week 20 years after it was released. The imagery is almost tear-jerking ("City lights lay out before us", "Speeds so fast felt like I was drunk"), and the idea of starting from nothing and just driving and working and denigrating yourself for a chance at being just above poverty, then losing in the end is just painful and inspiring at the same time.
Nothing left to say
And all I've left to do
Is run away
From you
And she led me on, down
With secrets I can't keep
Close your eyes and sleep
Don't wait up for me
Hush now don't you speak
To me
Wrapped my hurt in you
And took my shelter in that pain
The opiate of blame
Is your broken heart, heart, your heart
(So now) I'm all by myself
As I've always felt
And I'll betray my tears
To anyone caught in our ruse of fools
One last kiss from me, yeah
One last kiss good night
Didn't want to lose you once again
Didn't want to be your friend
Fulfilled a promise made of tin
And crawled back to you
I'm all by myself (close your eyes and sleep)
As I've always felt (don't wait up for me)
I'll betray myself (hush now, don't you speak)
To anyone, lost, anyone but you
So let the sadness come again
On that you can depend on me, yeah
Until the bitter, bitter end of the world, yeah
When God sleeps in bliss
I'm all by myself
As I've always felt
And I'll betray myself
To anyone
And all I've left to do
Is run away
From you
And she led me on, down
With secrets I can't keep
Close your eyes and sleep
Don't wait up for me
Hush now don't you speak
To me
Wrapped my hurt in you
And took my shelter in that pain
The opiate of blame
Is your broken heart, heart, your heart
(So now) I'm all by myself
As I've always felt
And I'll betray my tears
To anyone caught in our ruse of fools
One last kiss from me, yeah
One last kiss good night
Didn't want to lose you once again
Didn't want to be your friend
Fulfilled a promise made of tin
And crawled back to you
I'm all by myself (close your eyes and sleep)
As I've always felt (don't wait up for me)
I'll betray myself (hush now, don't you speak)
To anyone, lost, anyone but you
So let the sadness come again
On that you can depend on me, yeah
Until the bitter, bitter end of the world, yeah
When God sleeps in bliss
I'm all by myself
As I've always felt
And I'll betray myself
To anyone

I think much like another song “Anti-Matter” (that's also on the same album as this song), this one is also is inspired by a horrifying van crash the band experienced on Nov 3, 2022. This, much like the other track, sounds like it's an extension what they shared while huddled in the wreckage, as they helped frontman Garrett Russell stem the bleeding from his head wound while he was under the temporary effects of a concussion. The track speaks of where the mind goes at the most desperate & desolate of times, when it just about slips away to all but disconnect itself, and the aftermath.

This is a sequel to 2001's "Reckless Abandon", and features the band looking back on their clumsy youth fondly.
Magical

Ed Sheeran
How would you describe the feeling of being in love? For Ed Sheeran, the word is “Magical.” in HIS three-minute album opener, he makes an attempt to capture the beauty and delicacy of true love with words. He describes the magic of it all over a bright Pop song produced by Aaron Dessner.
Punchline

Ed Sheeran sings about missing his former partner and learning important life lessons in the process on “Punchline.” This track tells a story of battling to get rid of emotions for a former lover, whom he now realized might not have loved him the same way. He’s now caught between accepting that fact and learning life lessons from it and going back to beg her for another chance.
I think you're all off with this Brave New World junk. I remember interviews from back in the day where Billy stated that he doesn't think too hard about his titles, that he just does a six degrees of separation and chooses titles according to association or whatever sounds cool. just take the song as it is: an epic meditation on disengagement and the end of a relationship.
Anyone that has ever had their heart unmercifully ripped out, trampled on and left for dead needs no explanation for this song. It speaks for itself...
Nothing left to say And all I've left to do Is run away, from you
Didn't want to lose you once again Didn't want to be your friend...
I hope it was worth it. Rot in hell...
Umm, I know that at the very end, like around 6:35, if you put it real loud, you can hear someone saying, "And you need to resist the devil so that he will flee". I found that out from this site: spfc.org/main.html
Supposedly Billy Corgan claims this song is based on the idea of a love relationship being like the drug opium. It slowly puts you to sleep, soothes you, and gives you an illusion of sureness and security.
Sounds like Billy's referring to someone who keeps going back to a lover who he knows will break his heart again and again. ("I'll betray myself"). The man can't help it...it's a vicious cycle for him. He can't stand being without her love...wants nothing less ("didn't want to be your friend"). It's another example of Billy's genius.
how so?
This song is great. I love the way the song builds up. I always listen to this before I go to sleep and it reminds me of the fall ( I don't know why?)
wait. what's "a promise made of tin"?
Maybe it's a promise made ten years ago. Tin is a symbol of a ten year anniversary.
I think it's to say that tin is thin, it's easy to dent and poke holes in. It was a flimsy promise.
A wedding ring.
This is my favorite song ever. I can always relate to it. I think it's about the end of a relationship. During a relationship you are in bliss, and everything seems perfect, and then you finally wake up when you see it finally starting to end. I think it's about trying to make it last, but it not working. I love it.
I love this song, nota s much for the lyrics as for the instrumental..it's so powerful, beautiful... About the title...does "Soma" necessarly has to mean something concrete? Maybe it's like "Mayonaise", you know..
