On the floors of Tokyo
A-down in London town's a go go
A-with the record selection,
And the mirror's reflection,
I'm a dancin' with myself

A-when there's no one else in sight,
A-in crowded lonely night
Well, I wait so long for my love vibration
And I'm dancing with myself

[Chorus]
Oh oh, Dancing with a-myself,
Oh, oh, dancing with myself
Well, there's nothing to lose
And there's nothing to prove, well,
Dancing a-with myself

If I looked all over the world
And there's every type of girl
But your empty eyes seem to pass me by
And leave me dancin' with myself.

So let's sink another drink
Cause it'll give me time to think
If I had the chance I'd ask the world to dance
And I'll be dancin' with myself

[Chorus]

Well if I looked all over the world
And there's every type of girl
But your empty eyes seem to pass me by
And leave me dancin' with myself.

So let's sink another drink
Cause it'll give me time to think
If I had the chance I'd ask the world to dance
And I'll be dancin' with myself

Oh oh, Dancing a-with myself,
Oh, oh, dancing with myself
If I had the chance I'd ask the world to dance
If I had the chance I'd ask the world to dance
If I had the chance I'd ask the world to dance
Oh, oh, oh, oh oh
Oh, oh, oh dancin' with myself.
Oh, oh, dancin' with myself, oh, oh,
Sweat, sweat, etc.

My Interpretation:i personally dont take it as a masturbation song...

If I looked all over the world
And there's every type of girl
But your empty eyes seem to pass me by
And leave me dancin' with myself.

i think its about a guy that goes out clubbing by himself but he cant pick up any chick at all so he ends up dancing with himself

    On the floors of Tokyo
    A-down in London town's a go go
    A-with the record selection,
    And the mirror's reflection,
    I'm a dancin' with myself

A-when there's no one else in sight,
    A-in crowded lonely night
Well, I wait so long for my love vibration
    And I'm dancing with myself

he decides to go back to his place n keep drinking and dancing since hes in the mood already but couldnt get any chick at the club

thats how i see it, hes a looser lol

General Comment:This was SOOOO popular "back in the day." And it is not about masturabation. Back then songs, for the most part, didn't concentrate on that topic. He's clear in the song about girls not looking at him (being passed over by them)....every type of girls' empty eyes pass him by. So....he's gonna dance with himself...meaning keep his chin up, and I suspect he's at a bar 'cause he's doing some drinking, which I may or may not decide to do with my friends tonight at the club:)

General Comment:All those who posted about it being the dance craze in Japan.... I TOTALLY agree. The interview mentioned early on can be found on youtube... annnnnnnnnnnnnd.... Billy even talks about it in the begining verse ... pretty obvious.

    "On the floors of Tokyo
    Down in London town's a go-go
    With the record selection
    And the mirror's reflection
    I'm a-dancing with myself "

I also think its about him (maybe not Billy himself) not being able to find a girl he can call his, or being ignored by the one he likes and how he deals with it by keeping to himself and having a good time with himself

General Comment:Freud is not taken serious anymore? Based upon exactly what information? No trust me, his theories may have been defied, but I can tell you that there are still many parts of his theories that are taken seriously nowadays. Believe me, I study psychology in the university and I personally don't like his theories and I also think that his theories are bollocks, but I can assure you that unluckily they are taken very seriously. After all I spent almost three months studying only about Freud. He's one hell of a sick bastard. Think about it, nowadays the cases of Oedipus complexity are based on his Psycholoanalytic Theory, the one written in his book of "The Interpretation of Dreams".

My Interpretation:Haha. You guys are sick. Frued isn't taken serious anymore. Didn't no one tell you guys that? Go down to the corner drugstore where you hang and ask the resident guru what this tune is about.

General Comment:Josega's comment really cracked me up, very funny. I'm pretty sure it's not about masturbation but hey, if that's your thing don't let me stop you. The song is about dancing by yourself and not waiting for anyone elses company or approval. Also you can be dancing with someone but not feel connected hence "dancing with myself" like feeling lonely in a crowded room.

General Comment:I think the song's about the mirror dancing thing in Japan, but more generally about clubbing and getting drunk. Entering a club, looking to pull, but as the night goes on and you drink more and more it matters less and less until your previous need for companionship is replaced just by the urge to dance, even if you're the only one doing it. He's sunk more than a few drinks. Instead of dancing by himself like a lonely person would do, he's dancing with himself. That's why a song fundamentally about loneliness, which is quite depressing, can be so upbeat and exhuberant. Both the original and Nouvelle Vague's cover are brilliant. Greenday's cover is rather dreadful though.

General Comment:The truth is it's all about dancing, alone, in front of mirrors. That's it.

    Here's something from wikipedia:

"Some have speculated that the song is about masturbation, but more likely it was inspired by what Tony James and Billy Idol witnessed in a Japanese night club during the band's 1979 Japanese Tour as patrons watched themselves dance in the space enhancing mirrors which covered the walls."

It's actually funny that how many people thinks this song is about masturbation.

Oh well, if you really consider dancing alone by yourself is a variation of masturbation, then yes it is.
