Lyrics for Alive as interpreted by LittleW

Alive Lyrics
"Son," she said, "have I got a little story for you
What you thought was your daddy was nothin' but
While you were sitting home alone at age thirteen
Your real daddy was dyin', sorry you didn't
See him but I'm glad we talked"

Oh, I, oh, I'm still alive
Hey, I, oh, I'm still alive
Hey, I, oh, I'm still alive
Hey, oh-oh

While she walks slowly across a young man's room
She said, "I'm ready for you"
I can't remember anythin' to this very day
'Cept the look, the look, oh
You know where, now I can't see, I just stare

I, I'm still alive
Hey, I, oh, I'm still alive
Hey, I, oh, I'm still alive
Hey, I, oh, I'm still alive
Yeah

Ooh
Yeah, yeah, yeah, hoo

"Is somethin' wrong?" she said
Well, of course there is
"You're still alive," she said
Oh and do I deserve to be?
Is that the question?
And if so, if so
Who answers?
Who answers?

I, oh, I'm still alive
Hey, I, oh, I'm still alive
Hey, I, oh, I'm still alive
Hey, I, ooh, I'm still alive
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah

Ah, uh huh uh!
Yeah, uh huh uh!
Ooh, ah, uh huh uh!
Yeah, uh huh uh!
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah!

i guess this song is about some kid who's real dad dies and he apparently looks just like him so his mom, still being in love with her deceased spouse falls in love with her son. This is from Vedder i dont know if i said it exactly right though.

This song was actually the first of a mini-opera that Eddie wrote known as the "Mamasan Trilogy". The song describes a boy who grows up believing that one man is his father but finds out that he is not. He grows up to look just like his biological father and his mother falls in love with the son and sexually abuses him. The song "Once" is part II of the story and describes the boy obviously mentally disturbed who is not able to control his rage and goes on a killing spree. The triology is concluded with "Footsteps" where the boy is siting in his cell on death row awaiting his execution.

Have just read a book about Pearl Jam and apparently the song is an amalgam of a few things - a news story about a lad who went on a killing spree - and the part about the lad being told by his mother that the man he thought was his father actually isn't, is about Eddie Vedder. He found out who his biological father was only shortly before his father died.

Other tidbits on the mamasan tri . . .

Eddie wrote thought up the trilogy while surfing in Pacific Beach. The Night Stalker was the big news at the time, which got Eddie to thinking what would get someone to go out and do such a thing. He create this storey which blends his dealings with not knowing his real father in Chicago (which he later got to know) and the undertakings of serial killers. The sexual feelings from the mother, to my knowledge, is added.

My sources include the Rolling Stones storey back around 1992 (Eddie with mask on cover) and discussions with Eddie's brother Mike (went to high school with him in San Diego). Think this is a reasonable explaination.

I always thought it was 'Mamason' trilogy, mostly because it's having to do with a mother and a son. That might be me being a smart ass though.

Partly it's about the boy growing up and not having known it was his father until his mother tells him that it was an acquaintance of the family's who died when he was a kid. The verse with the sexual content is a different scene. His mom has recently told him the truth about his dad and he's pretty messed up over it. Now he's with a woman, maybe a prostitute. He wants to have sex with her but he stops because of "...the look," that she has. Vedder explained that it wasn't the look on her *face* that stops the kid in his tracks... it's actually her vagina that he can't stop staring at.

I heard that the first vrese and a bit are about Eddie, but the rest is made up. The song is the first part of a Trilogy. It is one of the great Pearl Jam songs but the version on Ten is not as good as some of the live versions.

I loved this song fromthe first time I had heard it, though I was a bit shocked when I found out the meaning behind the song, I had no idea that it was about what it's about, lol. Still, one of the classics from the album "ten"

is the woman in the second verse his mother or a normal partner? and either way, why is it that he cannot bear the sight of her vagina?

I love Pearl Jam but the lyrics are wrong. It's suppost to be nothing but a Fucking Fool. I went to one of their concerts that what he says!!!
Beside that it's 'bout a guy who finds out who his real father is when he's like really old.

I heard that Pearl Jam were playing Newcastle Riverside (now a shitty dance club) in '92, and due to the huge amount of press they had been getting in Kerrang! magazine I bought a ticket to see them, despite them not even having released a damn single by then.

Then Alive came out which I bought on a cassette single (remember them?!) and I hated it, but still went to see them anyway.

They blew me away, I had never seen a band before or have seen one ever since that played with anywhere near the passion that I saw that night. Sure the venue only held about 500 people at the most but almost everyone in that tiny club witnessed a little bit of rock history.

Of course "Alive" and the "Ten" album are all time classics and it shows you how wrong you can be on a first listen!
