Lyrics for Scarlet Begonias as interpreted by The Big Andowski

Scarlet Begonias Lyrics
As I was walkin' down rubadub square
not a chill to the wind but a nip to the air
from another direction she was caught in my eye
It could be an illusion but I might as well try
might as well try
she had rings on her fingers and bells on her shoes
and I knew without asking- she was into the blues
she wore scarlet begonias tucked into her curls
I knew right away she was not like other girls
like other girls

Well I ain't never been right as I ain't never been wrong
as heaven works out the way it does in this song (hey)
'cuz once in awhile you get shown in the light in the strangest of places if you look at it right

It was the summer of love and I thank the stars above
because the woman took a lovin' over me
and just to gain her trust I bought a microbus
because I sold off all my personal property

A tight tye-dye dress she was a psychadelic mess
we toured to the north, south, east, and west
we sold some mushroom tea we sold some extacy we sold nitrous, opium, acid, heroin, and pcp

and now I hear the police comin' after me
yes now I hear the police comin' after me
the one scarlet with the flowers in her hair she's got the police comin' after me

but there ain't nothin' wrong with the way she moves
all scarlet begonias and a touch of the blues
and there ain't nothin' wrong with the love that's in her eye
I had to learn the hard way just to let her pass by
let it pass by
oh just let her pass by

i love sublime, almost as much as i love the grateful dead. but in any case, as great as their version is, it cannot even touch the original. do your homework on the music of that time.

yeah, grateful dead's is better. this is definatley my fave sublime song, even if it's not their own. i just got kinda annoyed that they changed the beginning. heh....my friends and i try to sing the little "It was the summer of love..." part, but we suck....

I love this song but The Greatful Dead do in fact suck Donkey Balls. Sublime will always be the greatest.

This song is sublimes, some of the lyrics are simalar but hte experience was different because this bitch sold bradley out and had him locked up the grateful dead song is just about heartbreak.

The Grateful Dead rock, hence why bradley did a remake/cover of the song, he liked it and he improved it without a doubt, but you can't give him all the credit, the dead wrote the song and thats what counts.. Jerry Garcia was a king and Bradley was one too..

damn! I played this song today at least 30 times.... I love it so much.... I haven't heard the original but I'm gonna download it soon.. and about the lyrics i think there's a mistake:
"not a chill to the winter but a nip to the air"
and also I think it's "seldom works out the way it does in this song"...
I loveee ya, sublime... Bradley, Eric, Bud and Lou.. you're the best

I once dated a girl named Scarlet Begonias. She was the first girl that would "let me enter through the back door". If you know what I mean. HA. Oh yea, and the Grateful Dead Rock!!!!!

I'm not sure who the grateful dead are but they kept following me around the country from 1988 through 1995.

i didnt know this song was a cover, but both Grateful Dead and Sublime were incredible bands. i'm pretty sure this the song they start the drum riff to at the end of 'what i got' before it cuts out. anyone else hear that?

Yes! I have that version, too. Unless... It's on all copies of this song. Is it What I Got, that starts, at the end?

It's almost entirely too pathetic to mention, but how can someone not know who the Grateful Dead are?!

haha i love this song. This is my favorite sublime song of all. So many party memories. The first and only time i got the fast rap part was when I smoked the fattest joint with my best friend. lol i try to get it sober but it doesnt work out. This is also the song that a friend of mine played when she drove me home after a few too many beers. lol oh man.

i do believe the drum riff was sampled from james brown's "funky drummer". i'm guessing mushroom tea is some psychadelic mushroom type drug?

"we sold some mushroom T, we sold some extacy, we sold nitrous, opium, acid, heroin, and pcp" hella good song.
BTW...Sublime played their last show in my hometown, Petaluma, CA. The next day Brad died. If I wasn't eight years old at the time maybe I would have went if I knew about sublime at the time.

I always thought the line "I knew without asking she was into the blues" was "I knew with that ass that she was into the blues" so I hope the lyrics that The Big Andowski posted are correct lol I feel dumb now, but this is a tight song anyway so who cares... the music of it reminds me of summer too in a way

This is my all time fav song. To really appreciate it though you have to know a little about what hes talking about. Mushroom tea? Yeah, have you ever heard of shrooms, thats all it is. People grind the caps ans put in tea to drink rather than eating them. Hallucinagens!!!
