So this has been.my favorite song of OTEP's since it came out in 2004, and I always thought it was a song about a child's narrative of suffering in an abusive Christian home. But now that I am revisiting the lyrics, I am seeing something totally new.
This song could be gospel of John but from the perspective of Jesus.
Jesus was NOT having a good time up to and during the crucifixion. Everyone in the known world at the time looked to him with fear, admiration or disgust and he was constantly being asked questions. He spoke in "verses, prophesies and curses". He had made an enemy of the state, and believed the world was increasingly wicked and fallen from grace, or that he was in the "mouth of madness".
The spine of atlas is the structure that allows the titan to hold the world up. Jesus challenged the state and in doing so became a celebrated resistance figure. It also made him public enemy #1.
All of this happened simply because he was doing his thing, not because of any agenda he had or strategy.
And then he gets scourged (storm of thorns)
There are some plot holes here but I think it's an interesting interpretation.
We're out of control
Out of control
Out of control
Out of control
Out of control
Sometimes I feel that I'm misunderstood
The river's runnin' deep right through my blood
Your naked body's lying on the ground
You always get me up when I'm down
And it always seems we're runnin' out of time
The river's runnin' deep right through my blood
(The river's runnin' deep right through my blood)
And maybe that I'm just scared of losin' you
Or maybe it's the things you make me do
The record player keeps on
Turning round
It could be stuck or maybe
It's a sound
It seems to me we both should
Hang around
(Surrendering to love)
Out of control
We're out of control
We're out of control
(Out of control)
Out of control
(Like we're just so carefree and
Free-spirited and they don't give a
It's what's I love)
(Out of control)
Somehow you have to give in, you know
That's how we see it, surrender
(Out of control)
Out of control
Out of control
Out of control
Out of control
Sometimes I feel that I'm misunderstood
The river's runnin' deep right through my blood
Your naked body's lying on the ground

So anyway, If someone REALLY wants to hear what this song is about, here is my interpretation.
Young.... love..... passion. If you see the video, it shows a commercialized communist revolution/love story which really ends up being a commercial. That commercial is blended into a real riot/revolution. Mostly featuring young people.
I'm imagining a young man who feels passionately about two things, his love and his 'purpose' perhaps a political party or something. And he is constantly torn between the application of his energy towards her "All this time I should be there with you." but he rationalizes this effort by thinking he's making a better country for the two of them.
The most confusing lyric in this song: "It could be that I'm losing my touch, or maybe you think my moustache is too much."
Shows that she's falling out of love with him because he can't give up his 'purpose.' The mustache reference is to Che, the leader of Cuba's communist revolution.
Satellite is out of control is probably a reference to Earth as it satellites around the Sun. (The main character is unhappy with the direction the world is going.)
Brothers of the sun is a term used to describe man, regardless of sex. (We're both humans) And the cold reference may be in relation to getting back to nature and not denying truths of life. (Communist philisophical thought.)
Great song too.
You sir, are a grade A bell-end.
