It's easier not to be wise
And measure these things by your brains
I sank into Eden with you
Alone in the church by and by
I'll read to you here, save your eyes
You'll need them, your boat is at sea
Your anchor is up, you've been swept away
And the greatest of teachers won't hesitate
To leave you there, by yourself, chained to fate

I alone love you
I alone tempt you
I alone love you
Fear is not the end of this!
I alone love you
I alone tempt you
I alone love you

It's easier not to be great
And measure these things by your eyes
We long to be here by his resolve
Alone in the church by and by
To cradle the baby in space
And leave you there by yourself chained to fate

I alone love you
I alone tempt you
I alone love you
Fear is not the end of this!
I alone love you
I alone tempt you
I alone love you

I alone love you
I alone tempt you
I alone love you

Oh, now, we took it back too far
Only love can save us now
All these riddles that you burn
All come runnin' back to you
All these rhythms that you hide
Only love can save us now
All these riddles that you burn yeah, yeah, yeah

I alone love you
I alone tempt you
I alone love you
Fear is not the end of this!
I alone love you
I alone tempt you
I alone love you

I alone love you
I alone tempt you
I alone love you
I alone love you
I alone tempt you
I alone love you

Song Meaning:So lead singer for live is a big fan of Jiddu Krishnamirti. watched an interview where he basically said "read a book" (Philosopher) Jiddu (an orphan chosen to be the next great teacher in a temple in india @1920-30 became astounded (@ 23 years old) that those who seek religious (and philosophical) knowledge are not seeking it within themselves, they are looking for a perfect answer from outside themselves to follow.

Jiddu: "you must find your own answers"
crowd: "yes Great Teacher, how shall we find our own answers?"
Jiddu: "Pay close attention to your self, your internal processes, find your riddles and solve them"
Crowd: "yes Great Teacher, how shall we solve our own riddles?"

So they appear to want to become sheep. Jiddu would say "the mind has become lazy" We as a people are looking for someone to follow instead of creating that person who is a leader within ourselves.

"All these riddles that you burn" :daily lessons are pleading with you to make up your own mind, but you just do what mommy (daddy, the preacher, god, the teacher, the psychologist etc.) taught you all those years ago, Instead of becoming yourself. Ever notice that the same sort of messed up stuff happens over and over till you learn a lesson from it? Denying your lessons means you refuse to learn what will save you this trouble in the future, so you attract the same trouble again and again. There is one commonality in something that happens to you more than three times, you are the same person who likes to get into the same trouble. Solve your riddles and become the one who loves you by making your life a better place to live FOR YOURSELF.

"I alone love you I alone tempt you" I is the product of the ego, (I know everything, I am all powerful; everything that goes wrong for me is some other persons fault) Translation: I am the only one who chooses the temptation, (take some responsibility) I am the only one whose love can set myself free to become my own leader. This means choosing a path that is not temptation, but the conscious choice of a person who will take responsibility for their choice. "No excuses: my choice."

"fear is not the end of this" : fear is usually where people retreat back to the comfort of some other persons rule. It is easier to be a slave than to be free, or ... live ;-)

    and now my favorite line:
"And the greatest of teachers won't hesitate
To leave you there, by yourself, chained to fate"

You are the only one who can help you. A true teacher knows that if you believe you are chained to a certain future... than you are, but if you believe you can break free, a great teacher can help you find "YOUR OWN PATH". Not Buddah not Jesus, not Mohammed not Fu Hsi, not Confucious, not Lao Tzu, not Krishna... these people all found paths, their own paths, but they did not find your path, you must do that for yourself.. Live your own life, not a reproduction of some long dead figure head.

Google: Jiddu Krishnamurti, and drink in the personal knowledge.

General Comment:This song is about rejecting religions (other peoples’ interpretations of God), using a relationship between a man (the narrator) and a woman (a Jesus freak) as a euphemism. And she should adhere to the narrator’s “advice”,…. finding one's faith and beliefs within ourselves.
IMHO, he’s created a paradox – don’t let outside forces influence you, but you should take MY advice…. So, this song is about how David Koresh is pissed that Jesus stole his girlfriend.

BTW, my views on god are the same as another David…

David Attenborough – “I often get letters, quite frequently, from people who say how they like the programmes a lot, but I never give credit to the almighty power that created nature. To which I reply and say, "Well, it's funny that the people, when they say that this is evidence of the Almighty, always quote beautiful things. They always quote orchids and hummingbirds and butterflies and roses." But I always have to think too of a little boy sitting on the banks of a river in west Africa who has a worm boring through his eyeball, turning him blind before he's five years old. And I reply and say, "Well, presumably the God you speak about created the worm as well," and now, I find that baffling to credit a merciful God with that action. And therefore it seems to me safer to show things that I know to be truth, truthful and factual, and allow people to make up their own minds about the moralities of this thing, or indeed the theology of this thing.”

General Comment:I agree with what alot of what the people have commented on here, but I have a few different takes.
Agree with the "its easier not be wise and measure these things with your brain", is clearly saying its way easier to be a sheep then take the time to think about the bullshit you being fed.

I think the chorus, is refering that your love of God can actually becomes jealous, obsessive and over powering and before you realise it, its all that you can see. Even what leads you into temptation becomes of Gods will. Suddenly anything that happens is because of God.

Which leads me onto the fate comment. Fate is accepting that you have no control over your destiny, whatever happens, happens, with or without your input. Now how many times have you heard a christian say "it was Gods will" or "just part of Gods great plan"? So I think here, Ed refers to the greatest of teachers, meaning ever the greatest christians who have read the bible a thousand times will still not hesitate to give you the reason for something happening as just fate, cause at the end of the day no one really knows why certain things happen and no one can account for them. But I also see a side here where you shouldnt rely on fate, and you should have your own input instead of listening to teachers, go out and learn for yourself, without someone telling you what to do.

Religion is based on fear. Christianitys' fear is burning in hell. The chorus line "fear is not the end of this" is encouraging people to see beyond the fear, look beyond what you are being taught by the church.

The love verse("Oh now, we took it back too far"), I get the feeling that when you question things too far, you then become lost and then get led back to the church with the hope of love from the Lord above.

General Comment:Based on what I have seen out there in various places on the internet, I think that Ed is a Christian and he is pretty frustrated with some of the "religious" that claim to be Christ followers, but are in fact just babbling hypocrites postulating piety from some high and holy platform instead of showing love and grace as Jesus commanded.

    My Opinion:Ecclesiastes 12:12
"Be warned, my son, of anything in addition to them. Of making many books there is no end, and much study wearies the body"

Actually 4 God this new "wisdom" as you say is GARBAGE!
All knowledge are in the bible already, why do people search for another?
    To be mislead?

    Luke 4:33
Now in the synagogue there was a man who had a spirit of an unclean demon. And he cried out with a loud voice, saying, 'Let us alone! What have we to do with You, Jesus of Nazareth? Did You come to destroy us? I know who You are- the Holy One of God!'

    This song resembles this verse!

Song Meaning:Interesting. I'm a devout Catholic, but I've always been fascinated with Live. Unsurprisingly, I don't agree with his lyrics here, but I have an additional insight that may be helpful. The more I read these opinions then thought about the song more, something clicked...

He could have been addressing it to his girlfriend who he "sank into Eden" with (euphemism for sex; the garden of delight) then feeling guilt and one of them having to be "alone in the church" after that.

His declaration of "I ALONE TEMPT YOU" removes "the devil" from the equation, as the Devil is the tempter to sin. Without a faith in the Biblical God/Christ, he likely believes that the devil is used as a mythological scapegoat by religious.

He's saying that it's HIM that's tempting the person he "sank into Eden" with. The rest of the lyrics just fall into place. Maybe the baby he talks about is a baby that the person he had sex with conceived.

"Only love can save us now" - no longer is religion an aspect of their relationship, and likely it was a strong belief of at least one of them, potentially of his partner. "Fear is not the end of this" is what he also tells her. He believes that she clung onto religion either because of fear or that the religion was making her fear sinking into Eden with him, i.e. sinning.

He tells her that the greatest of teachers (note he doesn't call Jesus the Messiah or God as Christians would) will leave her "chained to fate" and trapped out at sea.

"all these riddles that you burn
all come runnin' back to you, all these rhythms that you hide"

Not positive on this bit, but it's possibly that he himself at times speaks in hinting terms to her about the problems he has with his faith and she rejects them. And all the rhythms that you hide, maybe she covers up the "rhythm" that they make together (sex euphemism?) out of shame

Ultimately, he feels at this point that the relationship is in a desperate state but still clings on and hopes that "love" can hold them together instead of driving her away from him and his clashing views.

I've always liked this song but never gave the lyrics that much thought -- on the surface it just seems like a very jealous guy, lol.

General Comment:I think Live has made it clear with songs like "Top" and "Operation Spirit" that they are far from Christian. I have always interpreted the lyrics to mean "I alone love you"- there is no god and "I alone tempt you"- there is no devil. The baby in space lyric is in reference to aborted fetuses that the pope said were in purgatory.

General Comment:it's about an affair between a priest (or other clergy) and a woman (who comes to confession?)
"I sank into eden with you alone in the church by and by"

she ends up having a baby by him, but it's a secret, no-one knows who the real father is, except the two of them

sometimes she brings the baby to the church when no-one but the father is around so he can be with her and his child
"we long to be here by his resolve alone in the church by and by to cradle the baby in space"

maybe they get carried away again - doing the same old thing they used to do before baby came along!
"oh, no, we took it back to far"

the priest (or other clergy) exercises some kind of twisted spiritual authority over her
"i alone love you, i alone tempt you"

although religion / spirituality is supposed to free us, unfortunately in this case it leaves her in spiritual bondage
"the greatest of teachers (Christ or his church, in this case represented by a hypocritical clergyman) won't hesitate to leave you there by yourself chained to fate"
In other words, the woman comes to church or confession seeking deliverance but instead falls into sin with the very one who is supposed to help her. He does nothing to save her, but instead leaves her "chained" to her fallen state, and according to the church's teachings on the road to hell (her ultimate fate)

    However, there is hope:
"fear is not the end of this"
"only love can save us now"

The songwriter is saying that by overcoming fear of hell, fear of what people will think & say, fear of the clergy losing his job & reputation, etc., the lovers can truly embrace their love for each other with nothing to hide, and they will truly love and respect each other when they stop trying to hide everything and stop feeling guilty about their love.
