Lyrics for Far Behind as interpreted by Avalanche256

Far Behind Lyrics
Now maybe
I didn't mean to treat you bad
But I did it anyway
And now maybe
Some would say your life was sad
But you lived it anyway
And so maybe
Your friends they stand around they watch your crumble
As you falter to the ground
And then someday
Your friends they stand beside as you were flying
Oh you were flying oh so high
But them someday people look at you for what they call their own
They watch you suffer
Yeah they hear you calling home
But then some day we could take our time
To brush the leaves aside so you can reach us
But you left me far behind

Now maybe
I didn't mean to treat you oh so bad
But I did it anyway
Now maybe some would say you're left with what you had
But you couldn't share the pain

No, no, no
Couldn't share the pain, they watch you suffer
Now maybe I could have made my own mistakes
But I live with what I've known
And then maybe we might share in something great
But won't you look at where we've grown
Won't you look at where we've gone
But then someday comes tomorrow holds a sense of what I feel for you in my mind
As you trip the final line
And that cold day when you lost control
Shame you left my life so soon you should have told me
But you left me far behind

Now maybe I didn't mean to treat you oh so bad
But I did it anyway
Now maybe some would say you're left with what you had
But you couldn't share the pain No, no, no

Now maybe I didn't mean to treat you oh so bad
But I did it anyway
Now maybe some would say you're left with what you had
But you couldn't share the pain
I said times have changed your friends
They come and watch you crumble to the ground
They watch you suffer
Yeah, they hold you down
Hold you down
Now maybe brother, maybe love
I didn't mean to treat you bad
But you left me far behind
Left me far behind
Left me far behind

I think this is sort of an apology/F U sent to an ex girlfriend. He knows that he treated her badly... but at the same time.. She kept a lot of herself hidden from him and he justifies his distance from her in the fact that she "left him far behind".. GREAT SONG.

I searched high and low for this song. I agree with Aniota that this is one of the best of the '90s. I also agree with Max that this is an apology but f**k you. Beautiful song!

This is a killer song...a beautiful deviation from candlebox's usual, pearl jam derived bullshit. Anyway, I concur that it's a big fuck off to an ex as well as an apology for misdeeds. This song kind of reminds me of a girl i knew once who was a couple years ahead of me in school. She fell into some drug shit and some bad relationships and she's (seriously) a crack whore. Pretty fucked up shit.

To me this song is about basically what most of you have said, but also i think that he tried to reconcile after they broke up which seems because of wrong choices by her and she left him far behind and now hes looking back thinking about how she has really fallen into the wrong crowd or simply made the wrong decisions and maybe looking at him for help and hes saying hey i tried to help you before and you wouldn't listen... now f*ck you!

This song is from the very bottom of Kevin Martin's heart.
It is 'specially dedicated to one of his friends who died of overdose. Something good I'd like to add is that because of this song and "You" some people gave up using drugs. Which by the way that made Kevin feel very happy.
The melancholy in Martin's songs is because he wrote most of them in Seattle, and as you know It rains a lot in Seattle, the weather is cloudy and cold. So once he said he couldn't write happy songs at Seattle because it didn't inspire him sunny feelings. So that's why they moved to California
As far as I know that's the story behind the song
And on my opinion ....Far Behind rocks!!!!
Thumbs up!!!!!!!!

yeah, i always thought this was a song was about someone who committed suicide or died of an overdose or something along those lines. "that cold day when you lost control, shame you left my life so soon you should have told me..."

i think he is trying to deal with the pain of this person being gone, realizing that maybe he didn't treat them the best he possibly could... but at the same time he's angry. he tried, he would have been there for them, but they just turned away... left him far behind... and now he's trying to deal with the pain and the anger at the same time.

great song. i love the emotion in his voice. it rarely fails to bring me to tears.

This song reminds me of one of my favorite childhood memories - going to the beach with my dad, brother, and dog to play ball. I think it was playing on the radio that morning, so it set the tone for the day. And though the lyrics are really sad, the music has this kind of jumpy happiness to it (except for the chorus part). The happiness I derived from it seemed to fit perfectly with all the fun I had that day, running through the fields with my dog, and even getting stung by a bee. (Okay, *that* wasn't fun, lol!) So anyway, that's what this song reminds me of.

It's a shame this song wasn't more highly recognized. I guess there are several ways you could take the meaning, but I definetaly agree it has something to do with someone and drugs.

Maybe I'm mistaking this band for another, but wasn't it candlebox who broke up and reformed under a different name?

its funny tinafeygirl says that because this song also brings back an awesome childhood memory for me. when i was a child, me and my dad were going to a Cleveland Cavs game and i remember hearing this song and now whenever i hear it, i am reminded of the great overtime game we saw where the cavs won it on a last second jump shot

This has always been one of my, favorite songs. Now it has an all new meaning to me... I recently separated from my wife. She cited the way I treated her in the past as her reason for leaving and she never told me sooner. She had an affair, and that's the only reason it came out into the open. Basically she moved on without me and left me far behind... all I did was live my life the way I'd known. Of course, it seems at times like these that every song I hear is speaking to me.

Man this song is fuckin awesome. As said before, this is oen of the best rock songs of the 90's. Great lyrics, beautiful music.

I think it's meant to be interpreted 2 different ways, the blatant meaning is about a girl maybe that left him and he's thinking back on the relationship. The other meaning, is about the whole over-dose and dying thing.

Either way, it's such a beautiful song that always brings back old memories. It captures the whole feel of early 90's rock, which was great.

THE REAL MEANING OF THE SONG:

This was written about Andrew Wood, lead singer of the Seattle group Mother Love Bone, who died of an heroin-overdose in 1990. Other songs inspired by his death are "Would?" by Alice In Chains, "Hey Mr. Lovedog" by Faster Pussycat, and the whole Temple Of The Dog project.

This part of the song reminds me of me ex boyfriend, he had it all going for him a sure plan for the future, great friends and then he turned into horndog he dumped me to get with the school mascot. Well he wanted her for nothing more than sex and well that's what he got. His best friends stopped talking to him cause they think he's an asshole and well his new girlfriend soon found out why he was really with her and dumped him soon after they found pictures of him kising and making out with other girls at a party he caimed he was never at. Now he's trying to go back and say he's sorry to everyone and yeah, we do feel a bit of pity for him but it was never for him to lie and cheat on someone, and think he does understands his wrong doing but we'll never forgive him...........
It was to bad cause he was flying oh so high

This is the greatest song ever written. Definitely about losing friends to drugs. I'm pretty sure it's about losing a close friend, and a girlfriend as well (the "Maybe brother, maybe love" line supports that). It's a fucking beautiful brilliant song; sad, angry and powerful. It's a shame these guys didn't get any of the credit they deserve, cause they're very underrated.

---------------------------------------------
And now, some info about Candlebox (since there were some questions above):
They put out 3 full CD's; "Candlebox" (1993), "Lucy" (1995), and "Happy Pills" (1998). The band officially broke up in 2000, and singer Kevin Martin has continued on with his new band The Hiwatts. They're pretty damn good too...

And for the guy who said most of Candlebox's work was "Pearl Jam derived bullshit". Dude, you can't be fucking serious. These guys sound NOTHING like Pearl Jam. At all. Ever. I've got every CD by both these bands; and they don't have similar riffs or similar playing styles at all. The only thing they've got in common with PJ is that both bands are from Seattle. Same with Alice in Chains, Soundgarden, and Nirvana. All 5 of these "grunge" bands got huge between 1991 and 1994, but they all had very different sounds. Unfortunately, Candlebox is the forgotten band out of the above mentioned, and it's a damn shame because they were excellent. (In my opinion, the best). Anyways, this ends my rant. Listen to Candlebox...

this song is about how the guy was emotionally abusing his girlfriend to the point where she "lost contol" and o.d. He knew that she didnt have any real friends such as the song says "they watch you crumble" he obviousy was mean to her but she didnt speak up or was mean back such as the verse "and you didnt share your pain' or something like that. and i love GRANT GALLAS!!!!!!!! this song's beat is a reflective tune; thats why everyone can relate to this son
