So this has been.my favorite song of OTEP's since it came out in 2004, and I always thought it was a song about a child's narrative of suffering in an abusive Christian home. But now that I am revisiting the lyrics, I am seeing something totally new.
This song could be gospel of John but from the perspective of Jesus.
Jesus was NOT having a good time up to and during the crucifixion. Everyone in the known world at the time looked to him with fear, admiration or disgust and he was constantly being asked questions. He spoke in "verses, prophesies and curses". He had made an enemy of the state, and believed the world was increasingly wicked and fallen from grace, or that he was in the "mouth of madness".
The spine of atlas is the structure that allows the titan to hold the world up. Jesus challenged the state and in doing so became a celebrated resistance figure. It also made him public enemy #1.
All of this happened simply because he was doing his thing, not because of any agenda he had or strategy.
And then he gets scourged (storm of thorns)
There are some plot holes here but I think it's an interesting interpretation.
This will not be easy to say
This might be hard to hear
If I could do it any other way I would
But I have to come clear
If I close my eyes, maybe it will all disappear
Disappointing clouds, maybe they won't interfere
All the faults and failures
Betray the day when the
Cowardly excuses get in the way of wanting more
Dawn of the day and we're done
Missing something
Now we can say it's over
Endings begin With an awful lot of maybes
Let's make a start at goodbye
You acted as you did
Like a selfish little bitch
A sad ghost spilling my blood on the carpet
The more I give the less I understand Why I'm here
No great surprise
Words I needed to hear
With all the signs
Breaking won't be severe
Anxious complex feelings Enter the frame as we
Stoke the fire but can't sustain the flame
To make it roar
Dawn of the day and we're done
Missing something
Now we can say it's over
Endings begin With an awful lot of maybes
Let's make a start at goodbye
Gone as the days with sun
Times a'wasting
Now we can say it's over
When we're caught
Between that rock and hard place
Let's make a start at goodbye
Between that rock and hard place
Make a start at goodbye
This might be hard to hear
If I could do it any other way I would
But I have to come clear
If I close my eyes, maybe it will all disappear
Disappointing clouds, maybe they won't interfere
All the faults and failures
Betray the day when the
Cowardly excuses get in the way of wanting more
Dawn of the day and we're done
Missing something
Now we can say it's over
Endings begin With an awful lot of maybes
Let's make a start at goodbye

Let's make a start at goodbye
Between that rock and hard place
Make a start at goodbye

It's just about how life can be confusing, but she doesn't regret any of the choices she's made. She'd like, as we all do, to meet a kindred soul.
