i love this song. it's...absolutely amazing. it's my favourite song of all time, hands down. "long to be with someone to tell i love your smell" ... absolutely amazing.

k, this is onna their best songs lemme say that first. but I think the song is about never being able to have the person you want. Loving someone so hard but them not loving you back. "I'd take a fall and you know that I'd do anything I will for you." "sitting alone in the sun I wrote a letter to you, gettin' over myself" He's hurting really bad. This girl took his breath away and he's not with her. Great song.

I agree with Kiefy. It`s all about wanting someone REAL bad and they just don`t wanna know. Like someone who`s almost like a best friend but thats it, hence the see right through line.

This is a beautiful song to me. One of RHCP best by far. "To meditate on the warmest dream, & when I walk alone I listen to our secret theme" I agree w/ kiefy, but Anthony says "OUR secret theme". What does that mean? Still one of my faves though. "Your solar eyes are like nothing I have ever seen......"

i wonder if anthony wrote this when john was struggling with drugs, and talking about how drugs kept him above the bad stuff in the world. its possible, if he wrote it during the period between one hot minute, and when john finally came back

suckmykiss, you've got a good point, and the line "its such a waste to be wasted in the first place" would go along perfectly.

But that's not how I originally saw the song (and still do, really)
I see it as being about a love he could have had, but didn't take the chance. Again the line "such a waste to be wasted in the first place" could go along with a wasted chance to tell his feelings. I guess the major reason I feel it's about love, though, is the line last line "long to be with someone to tell i love your smell" and the line about sitting by the phone could be about him sitting by the phone thinking of calling her, but he doesn't...

another possability is that he was on drugs, and he was too zoned out to call her and that's where the reference to John and being wasted as being a waste come from... oh well, I should really stop now.

has anyone noticed that they use 'smell' in the lyrics a lot? like, in other song. i kno they mention smell in 'don't forget me' and i think in another song too. i guess they like to smell.

This song is about drugs. Close to my skin I'm falling in? Can we say heroin? Left alone in another zone? Meditate on the warmest dream, shooting heroin makes you feel very warm and cozy. Just look through the lyrics, it's obvious.

Why does everyone insist on every song being about drugs? Drugs have enough versitality that you could relate any song to them. But anyways, I think this song is what Kiefy said. Caring about someone but not being able to tell them or be with them.

in othewr words he thought to highly of himself, his ego may have been preventing a relationship that he had wanted to happen, but he didnt think she was god enough to be seen in public with ? or something to that effect, however his egotistical behavior is constant

I believe this is a long song, but not nessecarily about a love he didn't take a chance on or he cannot recieve in return. I think it's about a love he had that went wrong and was ended, wether by him or by the girl. As far as the refrence to drugs, I agree with what someone else said. Drugs have such broad range of affects and features that anything could be attached to drug use. The "close to my skin" lyric is accented by the title, "this velvelt glove". "Sailin’ for the sun
’Cause There is one
Knows where I’m from" I think is an attachment to a part of the chorus. "Your solar eyes are like nothing I have ever seen". The love interests eyes' are so bright they remind him of the sun, thus he sails toward it to find that feeling he once had. Sailing would be a metaphor to his departure, to which john says to live above hell, or to live life well outside of this scope of love. It may also be a refrence to the book of john, but that's if you want to stretch it i suppose. All in all, this is my favorite song by RHCP.

personally speaking, this was one of the songs i remember listening to shortly after a previous breakup. it was done through email, and as i was writing a reply to his, one of the lines i heard was "sit alone in the sun/I wrote a letter to you/getting over myself."

...listening to this song tends to make me sad.

This is one of my favorite songs! I love the line " No one is waiting for me to fail, and my will could saail.." It's like saying Try your best and be yourself, cuz no one's gonna stop you..VERY encouraging words! :)

suckmykiss, i think you are on the right track, this song could meana lot of things and peolpe see things other ways,
i think this is about drugs, you peolpe keep saying "stop saying drugs about everything". but you must realise that drugs are a major part of there lives and have been for 15 -20 or 25 years. they have lost friends ,many freinds and have all struggled thru drug prob's.
"john say's to live above hell" john has been to the lowest point , so that's what i take that line as, anthony saying ,john has told me and is helping me to not go to that place.
" i want to taste the taste of being face to face with common grace"
anthony is saying he want to taste life straigt,drug free.
" to meditate on the warmest dream"
him,flea and john are all keen meditaters now.

" sit alone in the sun, i wrote a letter to you , i'm getting over my self"
that could be a letter he wrote john when they were apart, about getting over drug's himself, like writing to a friend and telling them your progress with your troubles
