Close to my skin
I’m falling in
Someone who’s been
Sittin’ by the phone
I’m left alone
In another zone
John says to live above hell
My will is well
No one is waiting
For me to fail
My will could sail yeah
It’s such a waste to be wasted
In the first place
I want to taste the taste of
Being face to face with common grace
To meditate on the warmest dream
And when I walk alone I listen
To our secret theme
Your solar eyes are like
Nothing I have ever seen
Somebody close
That can see right through
I’d take a fall and you know
That I’d do anything
I will for you
Sailin’ for the sun
’Cause There is one
Knows where I’m from
I care for you
I really do I really do
Come closer now
So you can lie
Right by my side
Sit alone in the sun
I wrote a letter to you
Getting over myself
Your solar eyes are like
Nothing I have ever seen
Somebody close
That can see right through
I’d take a fall and you know
That I’d do anything
I will for you
Your solar eyes are like
Nothing I have ever seen
Somebody close
That was made for you
I’d take a fall and you know
That I’d do anything
I will for you
Close to my skin
Someone who’s been
I’m a falling in
Disasters are
Just another star
Falling in my yard
John says to live above hell
My will is well
Long to be with
Someone to tell
I love your smell
I’m falling in
Someone who’s been
Sittin’ by the phone
I’m left alone
In another zone
John says to live above hell
My will is well
No one is waiting

Its obviously about drugs and love.
If you read Scar Tissue, Anthony talks about how he would often go through the hell that is heroine withdrawal with the help of some of his girlfriends.
Your solar eyes are like
Nothing I have ever seen
Somebody close
That was made for you
Id take a fall and you know
That Id do anything
I will for you
Like her eyes can see through him and tell when he's been using
so he would get clean for her with her by him to help him.
Weren't John and Anthony on drugs at the same time? It kinda seems like this song was written during one of those times and they beat it together. Then again, it's been a while since I read Scar Tissue and I may have forgotten some things.
The title probably references the graphic novel "Like a Velvet Glove Cast in Iron" by Daniels Clowes. The trippy story about the protagonist finding himself living a life of debauchery and realizing that his true love is what he needs totally matches up with the theme of this song.
Not sure if a connection can be made with this, but Velvet Glove was also a name given to a Canadian style air missile. I'm leaning much more toward the graphic novel, though.
the bridge "such a waste to be wasted in he first place i want to taste the taste of being face to face with common grace" seems like its a reference to all the drugs and alcohol and how he wants to get clean but each time he tries he fails and regrets it. they just packed so much into one song, it seems like its about so much and its just so easy to relate too, any way thats all i have to say.
peace, love the chilis.
this song sends shivers down my spine, the lyrics are absolutely beautiful and full of meaning i can just listen to it for hours on end and lose myself in it.
argh the meaning of this song always messed with me, i always related to it as a song about love and being there for someone, but who knows, its such a positive and uplifting song. it inspires me.
i only have one question, i never understood the title, like why 'this velvet glove.'
can anyone help offer some insight please? (: thanks
This idiom [Velvet Glove] is used to describe a person who appears gentle, but is determined and inflexible underneath. ('Iron fist in a velvet glove' is the full form.)
that a velvet glove is; velvet is a simile of the soft, beautiful and amazing sensation he feels holding his (ex?)girl friend and glove refers to how his girlfriend fits him perfectly like a soul partner.
the bulk of the song's theme is a pretty fucking awesome metaphor for love/devotion and the beautiful roller coaster that it is. i could explain each word/phrase, but it's all really simple.
another major theme of the song is that ak was being a bit of a cunt in the early years. with jf off on a drug binge which put his life on the line and disrupted the band etc, ak felt the need to try and bring jf back to the sober world to save jf from an od. understandably jf wouldn't have much trust in ak, so ak needed a really genuine way to apologise to jf and convince him to sober up. so...
life is about love(which is for reproduction to take place), it is the reason why we exist. ak gives the concept of love as a light for jf to aim for in life and break his addiction. there is one problem with this whole theory of mine though, it kinda relies on john having said to ak something along the lines of living above hell/(living happily) is a life well spent in the past and ak has realised this too through love for his (ex?)girlfriend.
comments on this last idea please? cheers
