I'm taking a ride with my best friend
I hope he never lets me down again
I know where he's taking me
Taking me where I want to be
I'm taking a ride with my best friend

We're flying high
Watching the world pass us by
Never want to come down
Never want to put my feet back down on the ground

I'm taking a ride with my best friend
I hope he never lets me down again
He promised me I'm safe in his houses
As long as I remember who's wearing the trousers
I hope he never lets me down again

We're flying high
Watching the world pass us by
We're flying high
Watching the world pass us by
Never want to come down
Never want to come down
Never want to come down
Never want to put my feet back down on the ground

See the stars, they're shining bright
Everything's all right tonight
See the stars, they're shining bright
Everything's all right tonight

General Comment:I have to admit, originally I didn't notice the reference to drug use and took the song literally as meaning him hoping his best friend wouldn't let him down again. In a way I like that it can be interpreted both ways... Even after I realized that it was about drugs I still like that there's this alternate interpretation. I found the original by depeche mode first but this version is so eerie and I think it fits it really well.

General Comment:Yes, yes its obvious the song is about drugs. Now back to Billy Corgan's whispering low voice making this song so relaxing and melodious.

General Comment:Funny that my fav. SP song wasn't written by them...:)

But no matter, because this cover of Depeche Mode is out of this world. The music is so melodious, so calm, yet so haunting...it's unnervving...it's out of this world.

I agree that the song is about drug usage, the narrator uses the term "best friend" to describe the drug, and phrases like "flying high again" only restate that fact...

General Comment:I think the song is simply about drug use. The best friend is just a metephore for drugs. His best friend is the drugs. When he say he hopes he never lets him down again, he is talking about the high he gets from the drugs. This is most evident on the stanza that goes as follows:

    We're flying high
We're watching the world pass us by
    Never want to come down
Never want to put my feet back down
    On the ground

General Comment:I agree with Chameleonica. Both songs are awesome, but Smashing Pumpkin's version simply sounds beautiful, melodious.
