I work in the field of mental health and I’m in my early thirties. About a month ago I broke up with a girl in her early twenties and this song has been playing in my head about what happened between us, besides the obvious, she being too young. But, she was beautiful in many ways and I miss her and tragically, I see her taking her life in a bad place, which makes it painful for me. If I thought she was doing better now, after leaving me, then I would be happy for her because when you really care about someone, you want them to do well.

Despite what everyone's interpretations are about 'One', it deservedly is one of the best songs ever written (always in my top 3!). I heard a rumour that the band were touring Germany and on the verge of breaking up. One very late evening when the boys were post gigging and spirits were low, Bono took the mike and strummed out something he had been working on - which eventually became 'one' and this injected a new impetus into a dying band and 'Achtung Baby' was born - or so they say. Has anyone heard of this story or is this merely urban legend?

RT - I just finished reading a book on Bono that is a series of interviews and he talks about this period for the band. The entire album Achtung Baby was influenced by discord in the band having just come off the incredible success of Joshua Tree. Edge was also going through a very traumatic divorce and from Bono's interview, that is where most of the inspiration for "One" comes from.
