Lyrics for One as interpreted by spitfirek7

One Lyrics
Is it getting better
Or do you feel the same
Will it make it easier on you
Now you got someone to blame

You say
One love
One life
When it's one need
In the night
It's one love
We get to share it
It leaves you baby
If you don't care for it

Did I disappoint you?
Or leave a bad taste in your mouth?
You act like you never had love
And you want me to go without

Well it's too late
Tonight
To drag the past out
Into the light
We're one
But we're not the same
We get to carry each other
Carry each other
One

Have you come here for forgiveness
Have you come tor raise the dead
Havew you come here to play Jesus
To the lepers in your head
Did I ask too much
More than a lot
You gave me nothing
Now it's all I got
We're one
But we're not the same
We hurt each other
Then we do it again

You say
Love is a temple
Love a higher law
Love is a temple
Love the higher law
You ask me to enter
But then you make me crawl
And I can't be holding on
To what you got
When all you got is hurt

One love
One blood
One life
You got to do what you should

One life
With each other
Sisters
Brothers

One life
But we're not the same
We get to carry each other
Carry each other

One

One.

The song has a double meaning. It can be interepreted as the aforementioned conversation between a gay son and a father coming to terms with his sons homosexuality.
The song also touches on bringing down of the Berlin wall and the contrasrts and comparisons between East and West Germany.

this is a great song, prob my favorite u2 song ever, it reminds me of loving someone who loves you back but there are things that seperate your true feelings. and the situation just can''t seem to work out.
Now it's all I got
We're one
But we're not the same
We hurt each other
Then we do it again
i really love that line its so true, and so powerful.

u2 is good.
one band.

anyways, nerdy and new found, whats your beef with everyone else?

nobody is asking you to come onto this website and read what a user posts. what makes you think that angel was even trying to be funny?

by the way, there is such a thing as free speech.

however, i will not be so CHILDISH (yea look whos in middle school now) as to bicker about something this utterly meaningless anywhere, much less the internet.

im not a big u2 fan, but i really like this song. I have no clue what its about, i like to think it has somethign to do with a girl and a guy being in love, and their past is really bad because they used to be together and screwed it up somehow. And now they're trying to get back together, but their past keeps getting in the way. A really good song.

and why the hell did u guys (sierp, finch, nerdy) even post that shit on the internet? u guys are dumbasses, go somewhere else to whine about stuff that no one here really cares about, cause no one wants to listen to u guys. Let people post whatever they want and keep out of it, cause they dont care what u think.

its not so much about love between 2 people, but rather love among everyone. i dont know if youve seen the video, but the whole band dresses in drag in it. thats part of the statement of the song showing that it doesnt matter who you are, man or woman, straight or gay, that everyone is a part of humanity. to further incorperate the idea of many things being one, u2 actually shot a few different videos for the song (3, maybe 4), but the one with them in drag was the first one shown and it got such a good response that mtv never bothered to air the alternate videos.

The end deals with harmony between manhood and man and nature,I so agree. But it's a love song.

This is a perfect song. It is off the most lyrically perfect album of the 90s (after Jeff Buckley's "Grace", of course)
and, disturbingly, made Axl Rose cry the first time he heard it! That is a bit dream-robbingly-confusing, but Hell, there hasn't been that perfection for a long, long time.

I think I'm going to agree with Satisfaction's post, way up at the top.^^If you watch one of the music vidoes for this song, the whole band crossdresses, and bono did even comment that the music video is about the dual sexuality in everyone.

Of course, it could be about love, also. It has the potential to have many different meanings, just like all their great songs.

I think this song is definitely about love. However it shows that true, everlasting love is not perfect. Love comes with disappointments and sufferings but in the end with all things considered it survives. To me this song is about marriage and about family. "one life but we're not the same. WE GOT TO CARRY EACH OTHER." I think the last line is critical in understanding this song.

I thought I heard somewhere that this song was about someone who had contracted AIDS? Anyone heard that?

Yeah, I'm going to contradict myself here. It WAS originally written about love, but then became a song that was for AIDS awarness and also about a gay boy talking to his father. But basically the song could work for any fragile relationship.

u2 thought that they had no more to give and where about to split up. bono sat up that night and wrote this song and they knew it was not over. they didn't what to do crap music and thought that they had come to the end and this song was the one (no pun) that showed them the light that night ( i'm a poet now....no!). true! i think this song is the best love song ever even if in my eye's it is about breaking up with someone. when hurt is all that is left.

You know it's sad everyone here is sharing there opinion of this song in appreciation of it and you get these idiots that just want to talk trash and make everything sexual. Go to a chat room please and get your immaturaties out. Spare everyone else here the time of having to scroll so far down just to get past all the crap and share there opinion. OK..... This song is really great, either about love or brotherhood I guess it means a little something different to everyone. Either way I take it as a love song and as someone up there said, any ladies that want to get together cuddle and forget the sob stories of the past lets get together.

This song reminds me of one of my best friends. He bought me the Achtung Baby album for me when I moved away, and he came to my house the night before I left, and we listened to One, and just cried.
My analysis:

"Is it getting better, or do you feel the same?"
Am I feeling better about being a thousand miles away from my friend? The answer, No.

"It's too late tonight, to drag the past out into the light"
We've had our differences, but lets not talk about them on the last night we'll see each other.

"We're one, but we're not the same"
We're best friends, but not the same person

"We've got to carry each other"
When I come back, we'll live together and look after each other.
So yeah. Brotherhood...sisterhood. Best friendship, between a guy and a girl. That's what it means to me.

Bono said once in a concert in Barcelona that this song was about Irish people which make sense when he says "we're one but we're not the same" refering to the situation in Northern Ireland.

turtonhot, newfoundfinch, nerdythewell- just shut the fuck up you trio of complete wankers, nobody cares! just fuck off back to your emo and californian punk bollox that you love so much and leave the real music to people like me and U2aholic ok.
i think its like marriage or the comming together of 2 lovers, i dont know if anyone else has said that already, i couldnt be bothered to read them all. anyway the 2 ppl realise that they are not the same ans they can anger each other sometimes but that is not what they love about each other, they love the good things.

It's ONE of the best songs ever in my opinion. To everyone means something different and that's something good. Personaly I think it's about a very strong and matching relationship that was so strong that got tiring and restrictive and now it's about to end.. Sorry Proddie but I think that Cash's cover has a very weak interpretation.. Johnny just don't feel the song.
