you are subtle as a window pane
standing in my view
but i will wait for it to rain
so that i can see you
you call me up at night
when there's no light passing through
and you think that i don't understand
but i do

we don't say everything that we could
so that we can say later
oh, you misunderstood
i hold my cards up
close to my chest
i say what i have to
and i hold back the rest

'cause someone you don't know
is someone you don't know
get a firm grip, girl
before you let go
for every hand extended
another lies in wait
keep your eye on that one
anticipate

dress down get out there
pick a fight with the police
we will get it all on film
for the new release
seems like everyone's an actor
or they're an actor's best friend
i wonder what was wrong to begin with
that they should all have to pretend
we lost sight of everything
when we have to keep checking our backs
i think we should all just smile
come clean
and relax

if there's anything i've learned
all these years on my own
it's how to find my own way there
and how to find my own way back home

I like the way this song addresses the way we maintain our distance and anonymity, so that we dont have to lie, and the price we pay for it.

It's amazing how different people can interpret songs so differently. Part of what makes art so special. I think the song is about relationships between people and the lies that always inevitably follow. I take the first verse: you are subtle as a window pane standing in my view but i will wait for it to rain so that i can see you... to be talking about how she sees a person who may seem to be completely honest and trustworthy, but really may not be underneath. The "waiting to rain" is about waiting for something to come to light, or the truth coming out in the end, to see who someone truly is underneath. I take this verse: "cause someone you don't know is someone you don't know. get a firm grip, girl before you let go. for every hand extended another lies in wait keep your eye on that one. anticipate" to be talking about a partner in a relationship who may or may not be unfaithful. The bit about the hands being extending shows you that you can never prevent it from happening. And you obviously can't "grip" on someone before they let go. Anticipation is no way to live your life basically. It would be better if everyone came clean about their secrets.

i had a dance teacher who once did a piece to this song and made us listen to the lyrics quite a few times...she had an interesting take on it, that its kind of a commentary on fame and how it changes people and forces them to put on an act and be wary of who they trust..."for every hand extended, another lies in wait"...people constantly are trying to get a piece of it, and will do anything to bring you down. and the general point of the song is that all of the hype surrounding fame is just foolish and that its too easy to lose yourself in it all, she refuses to get caught up in all that and "if there's anything [she's] learned in these years on [her] own...its how to find [her] own way back home"

I saw her in concert and she sang this and said she wrote it about all the big record labels coming to her wanting to sign.

it makes sense about the bog record labels. she has a lot of songs about it as well such as napoleon, the million you never made, the next big thing. i love all of them.

Holiday
Bee Gees
@[Diderik:33655] "Your a holiday!" Was a popular term used in the 50s/60s to compliment someone on their all around. For example, not only are they beautiful, but they are fun and kind too ... just an all around "holiday". I think your first comment is closer to being accurate. The singer/song writers state "Millions of eyes can see, yet why am i so blind!? When the someone else is me, its unkind its unkind". I believe hes referring to the girl toying with him and using him. He wants something deeper with her, thats why he allows himself to be as a puppet (even though for her fun and games) as long as it makes her happy. But he knows deep down that she doesnt really want to be serious with him and thats what makes him.

Dreamwalker
Silent Planet
I think much like another song “Anti-Matter” (that's also on the same album as this song), this one is also is inspired by a horrifying van crash the band experienced on Nov 3, 2022. This, much like the other track, sounds like it's an extension what they shared while huddled in the wreckage, as they helped frontman Garrett Russell stem the bleeding from his head wound while he was under the temporary effects of a concussion. The track speaks of where the mind goes at the most desperate & desolate of times, when it just about slips away to all but disconnect itself, and the aftermath.

I Can't Go To Sleep
Wu-Tang Clan
This song is written as the perspective of the boys in the street, as a whole, and what path they are going to choose as they get older and grow into men. (This is why the music video takes place in an orphanage.) The seen, and unseen collective suffering is imbedded in the boys’ mind, consciously or subconsciously, and is haunting them. Which path will the boys choose? Issac Hayes is the voice of reason, maybe God, the angel on his shoulder, or the voice of his forefathers from beyond the grave who can see the big picture and are pleading with the boys not to continue the violence and pattern of killing their brothers, but to rise above. The most beautiful song and has so many levels. Racism towards African Americans in America would not exist if everyone sat down and listened to this song and understood the history behind the words. The power, fear, pleading in RZA and Ghostface voices are genuine and powerful. Issac Hayes’ strong voice makes the perfect strong father figure, who is possibly from beyond the grave.

Blue
Ed Sheeran
“Blue” is a song about a love that is persisting in the discomfort of the person experiencing the emotion. Ed Sheeran reflects on love lost, and although he wishes his former partner find happiness, he cannot but admit his feelings are still very much there. He expresses the realization that he might never find another on this stringed instrumental by Aaron Dessner.

American Town
Ed Sheeran
Ed Sheeran shares a short story of reconnecting with an old flame on “American Town.” The track is about a holiday Ed Sheeran spends with his countrywoman who resides in America. The two are back together after a long period apart, and get around to enjoying a bunch of fun activities while rekindling the flames of their romance.
