Both as a standalone and as part of the DSOTS album, you can take this lyric as read. As a matter of public record, Jourgensen's drug intake was legendary even in the 1980s. By the late 90s, in his own words, he was grappling with massive addiction issues and had lost almost everything: friends, spouse, money and had nearly died more than once. "Dark Side of the Spoon" is a both funny & sad title for an album made by a musical genius who was losing the plot; and this song is a message to his fans & friends saying he knows it. It's painful to listen to so I'm glad the "Keith Richards of industrial metals" wised up and cleaned up. Well done sir.

The movie (and the lyrics, although more obliquely) are about bored, rebellious youth with nothing better to do than get into trouble. If you see the movie, these lyrics will make more sense. It's a great movie if you grew up in the 70s/80s you'll definitely remember some of these characters from your own life. Fun fact, after writing the song, Van Halen decided not to let the movie use it.

I think your first comment is closer to being accurate. The singer/song writers state "Millions of eyes can see, yet why am i so blind!? When the someone else is me, its unkind its unkind". I believe hes referring to the girl toying with him and using him. He wants something deeper with her, thats why he allows himself to be as a puppet (even though for her fun and games) as long as it makes her happy. But he knows deep down that she doesnt really want to be serious with him and thats what makes him.

There is a LOT of repetitive questionings about God, curiosity and questioning with the desire to know more as far as religious theology goes - as well as attempting to discern and throwing out his own theories, questions, fears concerns, disagreements & confusions relating to organized religion, but also considering and questioning and desiring the factor of salvation, lots of lyrics about attempting to chase God's mercy of deliverance from evil, questioning spirituality's place in organized religion, stating differences between Heaven and Hell, fear about descending rather than ascending, curiosity about God in general, and also - there's a lot of content in his lyrics about discernment between good & evil, mortal sin, introspection towards his own sins & wondering if God will forgive him or if he's damned, as well as a lot of sadness towards people who use energetic manipulation (witchcraft, dark occult magic, etc.) for evil, covet, ruin, sour, spoil, siphoning rather than for good. These are all things that are relative to believing in God enough to wonder about them. Look and you will seek your proof.
