Lyrics for Breed as interpreted by shut

Breed Lyrics
I don't care, I don't care, I don't care, I don't care, care, care if I'm sold
I don't mind, I don't mind, I don't mind, I don't mind, mind, don't have a mind
Get away, get away, get away, get away, 'way, 'way from your home
I'm afraid, I'm afraid, I'm afraid, I'm afraid, 'fraid, ghost!

Even if you have
Even if you need
I don't mean to stare
We don't have to breed
We can plant a house
We can build a tree
I don't even care
We can have all three
She said
She said
She said
She said
She said
She said
She said
She said!

I don't care, I don't care, I don't care, I don't care, care, care if I'm sold
I don't mind, I don't mind, I don't mind, I don't mind, mind, don't have a mind
Get away, get away, get away, get away, 'way, 'way from your home
I'm afraid, I'm afraid, I'm afraid, I'm afraid, 'fraid, ghost!

Even if you have
Even if you need
I don't mean to stare
We don't have to breed
We can plant a house
We can build a tree
I don't even care
We can have all three
She said
She said
She said
She said
She said
She said
She said
She said!

Ahh!
Even if you have
Even if you need
I don't mean to stare
We don't have to breed
We can plant a house
We can build a tree
I don't even care
We can have all three
She said
She said
She said
She said
She said
She said
She said
She said
She said!

I think it's more of an attack against the typical blue-collar white middle class male and family living in suburbia.

In Kurt Kobain's suicide letter, he was talking about how he doesn't even feel the music anymore, like he's just writing it, and it has no feeling or meaning- maybe alot of his songs... don't mean anything?? It's possible. Drugs and depression will do weird shit to people. I'm not saying that his songs DON'T mean anything... but it's always a possibility.

i think this song must have a meaning...even if it's very vague, something inspired kurt, even if it was just the drugs, but this is art,no matter what...anyway,we can plant a house,we can build a tree it's a great line...i guess...it sounds good, and even if doesnt make sense, ppl always think of one...the sound is brilliant,so,it's one more great nirvana's song....

We don't have to breed
We can plant a house
We can build a tree
I don't even care

could be about how you can do things however you want, and it doesn't have to be the way society expects you to do them

I think it might have to do with a woman who is being controlled/abused by her husband.

"I don't care, I don't care, I don't care, I don't care, care, care if I'm sold "
He pretty much owns her

"I don't mind, I don't mind, I don't mind, I don't mind, mind, don't have a mind"
Her opinions and thoughts don't matter, she doesn't have a mind of her own

"Get away, get away, get away, get away, 'way, 'way from your home
I'm afraid, I'm afraid, I'm afraid, I'm afraid, 'fraid, ghost! "

She wants to get away and is afraid of him because he is abusing her

"We don't have to breed
We can plant a house
We can build a tree
I don't even care "

I'm not really sure about this part, maybe he is old fashioned and wants to live the "american dream" while she wants to do different things, but again it doesn't matter because he makes all the decisons.

This song was written about Tad Doyle, the lead singer of the band Tad that Nirvana toured with back in the day. Tad was a pretty big guy and he puked and got diarrhea a lot. So Kurt first called the song "Imodium" because of Tad's medication to help his shitting problem. However there isn't really anything in this song that has anything to do with Tad. The book Heavier than Heaven by Charles Cross says that it also is thought to "suggest a running of the mouth. More elaborate than Kurt's early screeds, it ended with the line 'she said' implying the song was captured dialogue, and adding another layer of narrative to decipher." So uh, yeah.

i think "Breed" is a very blatant attack on the typical suburban life, as flying said. hes saying that he doesn't need the typical 2 or 3 kids and a dog to be happy, he doesn't want the button down 9-5 life. i also think how he referrs to having children as "breeding", is kind of a negative connotation. so maybe kurdt didn't want to have children *shrug*.

One of my favorites. I think it's more about having to choose between what you want, what you're told to want, and what you can't have. I think it's about a hard decision to make, when you realize what's impossible.

I also agree there might be something to "desperate to stay with someone", but I think its' more desperate to get with someone," the start of a relationship, not the continuation:

"Even if you have
Even if you need
I don't mean to stare,
We don't have to breed.
We can plant a house
We can build a tree
I don't even care
We could have all three. . .

This seems like "I don't care, I'll do whatever you want, just accept me."

Besides, think about it. "We could have all three" This is actually very subtle, adn I think shows some of the meaning. Count it off. House is one, tree is two, thus breeding/children would be three. THe speaker offers the house, offers the tree, and offers not to have children, but then goes back on the last one. Very subtle, very cool.

BTW: the song itself, the lyrics, have nothing to do with Tad Doyle or hte band TAD, just the orginoal title, Immodium. For Kurt Cobain, a lot of times, teh song title came last. His annoyance with Doyle's digestive problems on the tour brought about the title, "Immodium" from a medicine Doyle was trying to use to control it. WHen the title was changed, as evidenced by the simple title, a word mentioned in the song, "Breed" he probably didnt' ahve a title in mind for hte song.

hes obviously confused in this song, and mixing things in his mind. i think he wants to marry (settle with) a girl or something, and he gets tongue twisted or something. or maybe the words just sound nice together. either way, awesome song.

silly Homosapiens...
he's talking about the tree of life? What? you don't know the taste of the fruit?

Which Ghost? the one full of holes.. like the plot of this shitty dream.

Want to be afraid?? be afraid not.

speaking of freying knots... you people seem a little tied down by sin tax.... forget yourself... maybe you're some one else

I'm not really the bringer of light, I just play one in the world of darkness.

This song is a harsh social commentsary, in which, Kurt is explaining the dangers of teen pregnancy. And, by using the word "we", it shows that Kurt was a totrtured man. And the use of "she" is obviously a refrence to Kurt's hatred of the media. And, of course the title comes from his hatred of rednecks.

I think, considering how fast the song goes, its him out of control, yelling, and all this pent up stuff inside of him comes out like he doesnt even care about breeding with, again, the mysterious "you". Another reason i think the song is all out of control is the line "I'm afraid, I'm afraid, I'm afraid, I'm afraid, 'fraid, ghost!", i mean hes basically saying that hes afraid (well duh). There might be another meaning in the line "I don't care, I don't care, I don't care, I don't care, care, care if I'm sold", maybe something like about a girl not caring anymore, if she is a ho or something, and shes making herself not care with "I don't mind, I don't mind, I don't mind, I don't mind, mind, don't have a mind". And then she says "Get away, get away, get away, get away, 'way, 'way from your home", maybe the home is the place where they are sold? and then the line again, "I'm afraid, I'm afraid, I'm afraid, I'm afraid, 'fraid, ghost!", admitting that she is afraid. Anyway i think like all Nirvana songs this has a lot of meanings, and everybody can think what they want because i guess well never really know, now that kurt is dead. well just have to listen and enjoy

well, like most other songs of kurt, he is singing about sadness, ignorance, and some jumbled stuff here and there. a great song no doubt.
