I want somebody to share
Share the rest of my life
Share my innermost thoughts
Know my intimate details
Someone who'll stand by my side
And give me support
And in return
She'll get my support
She will listen to me
When I want to speak
About the world we live in
And life in general
Though my views may be wrong
They may even be perverted
She'll hear me out
And won't easily be converted
To my way of thinking
In fact she'll often disagree
But at the end of it all
She will understand me

I want somebody who cares
For me passionately
With every thought and
With every breath
Someone who'll help me see things
In a different light
All the things I detest
I will almost like
I don't want to be tied
To anyone's strings
I'm carefully trying to steer clear of
Those things
But when I'm asleep
I want somebody
Who will put their arms around me
And kiss me tenderly
Though things like this
Make me sick
In a case like this
I'll get away with it

General Comment:DM were always deeper and darker than the other British bands in the 80s. Despite that, this is actually one of the sweetest love songs which gives you a glimpse into two things: the British psyche and approach to love and also the famous British humour.

As for the Martin Gore interview, well, it is a bit of a sad insight into him (if it's true). At the end of the day, why wouldn't you sing this song about a special somebody? It speaks the truth about love (and relationships built on love), and this is particularly true when you love someone:

    "All the things I detest
    I will almost like"

General Comment:A possible interpretation of the lyrics:

    "Though things like this
    Make me sick
    In a case like this
    I'll get away with it"

is that the person realizes that they lack the ability for close intimacy, moreover, they are hiding this from the world; intimacy makes the person feel sick, yet they are lonely. In short, a plausible interpretation is that the person is a sociopath.

General Comment:The beautiful lyrics of this song convey a hearts overwhelming longing to be loved with a mind which contradicts it all. A person who desperately wants to be in love with the fear of falling completely.

General Comment:When I heard this song a few years back, it was like someone hitting me deep inside with the biggest epiphany I'd ever known. The words definitely, they count in a big way, but the music just as much.

And at the risk of offending Depeche Mode fans out there (of which I'm one of them)...the band called Veruca Salt does a cover that is just as good. They bring an entirely different feel to it.

Maybe I'm reading those words wrongly (and if I am, my partner is as well), but those lines suggest the song's been penned from the point of view of a child molester...

General Comment:I've always interpreted this song as sinister and manipulative, yet one of the deepest and most beautiful songs I've ever heard.

"I don't want to be tied / To anyone's strings / I'm carefully trying to steer clear of Those things / But when I'm asleep / I want somebody / Who will put their arms around me / And kiss me tenderly / Though things like this / Make me sick / In a case like this / I'll get away with it." Also, in the 101 version he adds the lines "In a place like this / I'll get away with this."

What's making him sick is that he know's he's getting deep satisfaction from a devoted babe, while knowing that he might replace her at any time.

These lyrics remind me of Shakespeare's genius.

General Comment:When I listen to Martin Gore sing this live on 101, it seems lie he is being sincere. I guess the case could be made that the entire song is false except for the last two lines, but I choose to believe the pervious interpretation: that usually he doesn't go for this kind of romantic nonsense, but with this one particular person, he's making an exception.

General Comment:I guess some people can see this song as an amazing, romantic work of art and some others will see it as a guy trying to get a girl laid. For me, it's both. Although the guy is saying all those things for the purpose of having sex with her, he also feels all that stuff and he truly loves her.

General Comment:I'm about to drop a bomb on all of you.

Martin Gore once had an interview where he talked about the meaning behind this song. The last part everyone wonders about, "Though things like this / Make me sick ..." In this song, he's talking to a girl, telling her things in order to get her in bed. Hence the "In a case like this, I'll get away with it."

    Sorry guys! 100% true.
