Swimming at night
We've dug this hole
The water's fine
I wonder how far down it goes
Down it goes...
Down it goes...

The stars above have lost their shine
And so, my love, departs our sight

The unending plains project a void
Where lovers gawk in pantomime

[scream: So let me up??]

Shallow means, deep ends
When the regret sinks in
Pressure erupts
Which way is up

Swimming at night
We've finally hit, hit...
We've finally hit bottom...!
Swallowing promises back into our lungs
Losing direction of our affections
Alright...

Shallow means, deep ends
When the regret sinks in
Pressure erupts
Which way is up

Down it goes...
Down it goes...

General Comment:In keeping with the marriage/divorce concept, I think this song is about getting into a relationship too early.

"Swimming at night, we've dug this hole..." > Swimming at night is comparable to being blind, because you can't really see much, and now the couple has dug this hole of a relationship that has gone on for so long with so much fucked up shit (lament of pretty baby/gameofwhoneedswho/casualty) they don't know whether to stay together or break up, hence "Which way is up?"

"So let me up!" > Tim wanting out of the relationship.

This should basically give you an idea of what this song is about. 'We've finally hit bottom' is pretty self explanitory when you think of it this way.

General Comment:This song is a mirror in that it is about a man drowning in all literalness, but it also about how the guy is drowning in his own life, "We finally hit bottom" shows the drowning guy hitting the bottom of the lake and the guy feeling he has hit the bottom of his life. Very emo, but cool all the same. Cursive kicks alot of ass for an emo band, which is saying something since pop emo bands are boring.

General Comment:Considering the album is about his divorce, I think this song is about his infidelity. He probably started to experiment with cheating on his wife ("I wonder how far down it goes"), but he soon lost control of the situation and hit bottom, and of course while it may have seemed fine before hand, he soon regretted it.

General Comment:I think it has to do with cutting, but that's just me. "Shallow means, deep ends". Cutting to fix "deep" problems. Shallows means being shallow cuts.
