Lyrics for The Martyr as interpreted by jephque

The Martyr Lyrics
And so it's begun
This is year one
The birth of a child
In the form of a man
Wrapped in towel
Passed out on the floor
These drunken hours
Graces deflowered
Cast down by an angel
She used to kiss his weeping eyes
Depressed in her bosom
Tears roll off her nipple

Sweet Baby, don't cry
Your tears are only alibis
To prove you still feel
You only feel sorry for yourself
Well, get on that cross
That's all you're good for

The martyr!

And thusly it ends
Depression seeps in
On a lonely messiah
Now he drinks with the lepers
Losing a limb
His better half
A glass once half full
A head hung half-mast
He claims he's the victim
Strangled by the nine-to-five
And a pattern of stillness
That haunted this still life

Your tears are only alibis
To prove you still feel
You only feel sorry for yourself
And that's how you thrive
Your sorrow's your goldmine
So write some sad song about me
Screaming your agonies, playing the saint

The martyr
The martyr
The martyr
The martyr
The martyr
Oh . . .

Even just the way he said "the martyr" in the end...incredible. I agree texticle...where do they hide such a form of nicotine? hmmmm. And I vowed to myself to stay away from drugs. bah.

This song is a lot like art is hard and it is also the second song on the cd (even though art is hard is really the 3rd but yeah). But this song is way good

domestica - best thing ever. the whole concept behind it makes it even better, along with all of cursives recent albums.

friendsforfebruary, you are joking, right?
tim kasher is the martyr. most of this song is sung thru kasher's wife. (er, actually, thru the "wife" character, not technically kasher's wife, but i think we all know better than to not think this is autobiographical... see the video for this song on The Ugly Organ... i think he's too upset and too into him being the martyr for it not to be about him). anyway, the chorus are her talking. after she says he's playing this "saint," he responds with "the martyr." i.e., she's saying he's trying to make himself out to be this better-than-thou saint, and he's replying that he's not actually a saint, but rather a martyr - he's dead...
it's rather poignant, i believe.
to add to this theory, see that video i mentioned. after the first chorus, he says "oh, and one more thing.. YOUR MARTYR". also, at the end, he keeps singing "i am the martyr".
jesus? jesus, that's a dumb comment.

friendsforfebruary,

You are an idiot. I like onemoregetupkid's thought on the song. The song for me is about some one who plays the matyr so much that they ended comparing themshelves to Jesus which maybe why the Jesus references are in there. When Tim sings the line, "Well, get on that cross, that's all you're good for." means that person is so caught in themself and the reality they hold, they are all good for is death. The matyr is this case really isn't a matyr but some one who is playing the fool.

I think that there are more martyr's in the world than just Jesus, and Tim is making himself out to be one. Although, in most people's view Jesus is one of the most important martyr's ever, if not the most important one. And so, and references to Jesus can only make the Martyr connections stronger and clearer

Coldwind,
There is more than one martyr in this world but in this song the martyr is comparing themselves to the ulitmate martyr which is Jesus.

ok, i don't think kasher has a christ complex. maybe it's just me, but looking at the whole album, concept, lyrics, etc. i got that it's an exchange between 'pretty baby' and 'sweetie.' pretty baby goes between comforting sweetie and indicting him with these martyr accusations, since he gets trashed and then goes to her for comforting. that's just my theory, though. let's see if it incites a riot.

Maybe it's just me delving too deep into songs, but part of me thinks that it could be about Conor. Both are obviously good friends, and there's been mention about the other in their songs ("yeah Tim I heard your album and it's better than good" about the Good Life album), and we know how frequently Conor is drunk. Especially the line "So write some sad song about me" makes me think it's about him. I don't know, my interpretation.

Alright, maybe it's lame of me to delve too deep, but part of me thinks that it could be about Conor. They're obviously good friends who express their friendship in song ("yeah Tim I heard your album and it's better than good" about the Good Life album "Black Out"), and we all know that Conor's one to drink away whatever problem is going on. His friends used to try to help him, but it's not working, so Tim's saying that, as a friend, he has to get his act together. Especially the line "so write some sad song about me" makes me think that. But that's just me.
