Lyrics for Blacking Out the Friction as interpreted by jephque

Blacking Out the Friction Lyrics
I don't mind the weather
I've got scarves and caps and sweaters
I've got long johns under slacks for blustery days

I think that it's brainless to assume
That making changes to your window's view
Will give a new perspective

And the hardest part is yet to come

I don't mind restrictions
Or if you're blacking out the friction
It's just an escape
(It's overrated anyways)

The hardest part is yet to come
When you will cross the country alone

This song, possibly, is about the hardships of life, and "blacking" them out...the weather could be simbolism for it,....and scarves, caps, even sweaters, could be defense mechanisms...or the support of friends, helping him get through the day. But these defenses are pointless--it's brainless to decorate your window and assume it makes your perspective different. Once you realize this, you know "the hardest part is yet to come."

It's a relationship that is faked...like, they're not really showing their real selves...it makes me think of my college move thats coming up, and how i wanted to be with someone that i thought i loved up until i left, even if it meant putting up with things that i wouldn't like...its a beautiful song.

This is one of my favorite songs ever. The music is great, and the lyrics are awesome, thus creating the perfect song. "I think that's brainless to assume that making changes/to a window's view will give a new perspective."

Yeah this song reminds me of when I moved to college too. Especially the lines "I think that it's brainless to assume that making changes to your windows view will give a new perspective." He is absolutely correct when he says that.

When they played this song live when I saw them, they played an altered version that started with Ben on the piano and Chris' guitar playing softly, then a after a while the guitars picked up like normal until after the final verse, when they continued into an all-new verse with the drumbs banging in the background and the guitars sounding like chimes. It was so beautiful, and the verse was amazing. It dealt with long distances and phone calls and was about love, to maybe shed more meaning onto this song. I wish they would record that version, it's seriously one of my favorite Death Cab songs. Maybe my favorite.

when you think you've already listened to every good song by dcfc, make sure you listen to each one of their albums throughly one more time. 'blacking out the friction' surprised me after i started listening to 'the photo album' regularly and now it is one of my favourites. i can't wait to see them live:~

Does anyone think that "the friction" could be sex? it makes perfect sense to me if you look at the verse
"i don't mind restrictions or if you're blacking out the friction
it's just an escape (it's overrated anyways) "

it's always seemed to me, especially when coupled with 'why you'd want to live here', that he's just a decent, hearty northern boy who doesn't have any use for the perpetual flow of spineless half-wits into armpits like l.a. and pheonix (just a couple of examples) simply because the weather's nice and there are plenty of like-minded dimwits to share their worthless lives with. he's seen the seasons change and has the balls to face the snowy cold in all its harsh beauty, unspoiled by overdevelopment and smog and can't understand why his friend can't see it the same way anymore.

Really like this song, and I agree with royspider for the most part. Escaping your home or losing yourself in drink (I always took 'blacking out the friction' to mean that, seems like a great phrase for getting drunk) isn't going to solve any of your problem, and it's stupid to think so -- the person in the song is just going to end up hauling their ass across America all by themselves and that's all they'll get out of it.

i think this song is about someone who is sticking it out through a bad situation (symbolized by preparing for the cold) while his friends all abandoned him by turning their back on the situation (new perspective)
i also can see the drinking analogy, but maybe it's his friends that are drinking for the escape, and he'd rather deal with the situation than running away from it.

This song is about a someone he knows (a girl or a friend) leaving to get a change of scenery. Because of the references to cold weather I'm guessing the destination is likely California. It could be this song is written about the same person as Why You'd Want to Live There but I could be wrong. This song hits close to home because a good friend of mine is doing the same thing in a couple of months. Escapism's a bitch.

i think he's talking about moving in this song, but i think it applies to any sort of major change you make in your life expecting a new perspective. the change has to come within yourself, so i think that was just his poetic way of saying it's brainless to change the outside when you need to change the inside.

I think this song is about whacking off or making some friction in your car. Anyone else agree?

I DIDN\'T REALIZE WHAT THIS SONG REALLY MEANT UNTIL MY BEST FRIEND WENT TO COLLEGE. HE WAS JUST OUT OF A BAD RELATIONSHIP, AND WANTED TO LEAVE THIS SHIT TOWN AND LEAVE HIS PAST AND FORGET ABOUT EVERYTHING BAD. HE DIDN\'T UNDERSTAND WHY THINGS COULDNT JUST GET BETTER. I TOLD HIM \"i think that it\'s brainless to assume that making changes to your window\'s view will give a new perspective.\" BECAUSE HIS VIEW (WHERE HE LIVED) MIGHT BE DIFFERENT, BUT HIS HEAD IS STILL IN THE SAME PLACE CLOUDED BY THE SAME PROBLEMS. HE HAD THE SAME EXACT PERSPECTIVE.

\"the hardest part is yet to come-
when you will cross the country alone.\" IT\'S JUST GOING TO GET HARDER. AND HE\'S CROSSING THE COUNTRY, BUT HE HAS TO REALIZE, THAT THESE THINGS TAKE TIME TO FORGET.

i think this song is about putting up with your problems instead of running away from them.. "i don't mind the weather, i've got scarves and caps and sweaters, i've got long johns under slacks for blustery days." is basically saying that its tough, but he's prepared.

"i think that it's brainless to assume that making changes to your window's view will give a new perspective." is about how there's no point running away, as the problems are still there.

"blacking out the friction" would be referring to ignoring the problems.

seems to make sense to me.

I think that it's about putting up with bad stuff "I don't mind the weather, I've got scarves and caps and sweaters" because you think it's worth it, or that the problem will go away, but in the end, the problem is always going to be there, like the weather, and it is better to deal with it than to pretend nothing's wrong "I think that it's brainless to assume that making changes to your window's view will give a new perspective".

I think that this song is about running away from your problems instead of sticking them out, and how it's brainless to do so.

'I don't mind the weather, I've got scraves and caps and sweaters' represents the problem at hands, and how he put up with them and goes out and faces them with the support of his friends (scraves, sweaters ect.)

'I think that it's brainless to assume that making changes to your window's view will give a new perspective' & 'the hardest part is yet to come, when you will cross the country alone' is about the opposite, if you refuse to face them and run away from your problems without the support of your friends then it shall be een harder in the end, as you will be alone without your friends to help you through it.

This is definately my favourite DCFC song, great music and lyrics. Paired with 'Brand New Love' on The John Byrd EP makes it even better.
