Lyrics for Information Travels Faster as interpreted by jephque

Information Travels Faster Lyrics
I intentionally wrote it out to be an illegible mess
You wanted me to write you letters, but I'd rather lose your address
And forget that we'd ever met and what did or did not occur
Sitting in the station, it's all a blur
Of dance hall hips, pretentious quips
A boxer's bob and weave

And here's the kicker of this whole shebang
You're in debt and completely fooled
That you can look into the mirror and objectively rank your wounds
Sewing circles are not solely based in trades of cloth
There's spinsters all around here taking notes, reporting on us

As information travels faster
In the modern age, in the modern age
As our days are crawling by so slowly
Information travels faster
In the modern age, in the modern age
As our days are crawling by so slowly

Information travels faster
In the modern age, in the modern age
As our days are crawling by so slowly
Information travels faster
In the modern age, in the modern age
As our days are crawling by so slowly

I think this song is after a breakup and she wants to " keep in touch " but he's confused and doesnt really care all that much.

This song's about how he breaks up with a girl and how she wants to stay in touch and stay friends and he really doesn't want to even bother trying.

Great ending, too. Just think of all this crap we have now, email, instant messaging, cell phones. It doesn't actually make anything better, just faster...and it makes our lives seem even slower by comparison.

It took me several listens to wrap my head around these lyrics. I'm still not sure I've got it, but here goes.

This song addresses the sense of feeling like you're in a fishbowl after a breakup, when all kinds of 3rd parties gossip and discuss your personal affairs like it was any of their business in the first place. And all the while, you just want to put the whole relationship to rest and not deal with any of the formalities of 'staying friends' or preserving your reputation amongst your ex's circle of friends.

"you're in debt and completely fooled, that you can look into the mirror and objectively rank your wounds.
sewing circles are not solely based in trades of cloth: there's spinsters all around here taking notes, reporting on us."

This is so heartbreakingly true. Debt is not to be taken literally here. The loss can refer to parting ways with someone you once loved, or even the time invested into the relationship that failed. You think you can objectively evaluate the extent of your losses, but don't even realize that theres a force out there complicating things even further: the "spinsters", or the rumor mill, everyone out there gossiping about your split, taking sides and casting judgement. Information travels so fast sometimes that you're helpless in even defending your own position. And the person with whom you've just split wants to remain friendly, but all you want to do is forget about this whole awful mess and move on.

I love the first two lines.
"I intentionally wrote it out to be an illegible mess
you wanted me to write you letters, but i'd rather lose your address"
It's just amazing.

Interesting interpretation, bugout.

I think Ben's talking about a girl he met at a party or something and she's all excited about him, but he isn't interested. She blurs with the other girls he met. Even the conversation was just a boxer's bob and weave. To me this song makes more sense after listening to Tiny Vessels and Expo '86. Ben has found another empty relationship and he doesn't want to get involved.

this is probably one of my favorite songs of all times. i think its about a breakup that he really wants to forget about. he wrote her letters because he had to, but the letters were unreadable. he wants nothing to do with the other person. it kind of reminds me of eternal sunshine of the spotless mind. he wants to forget everything and as he does, the memories of her becomes a blur

I agree. He met a girl and she wants to keep in touch, but he really just doesn't care. And I love the 'spinsters' line, like old women who gossip about everything. I didn't get the sewing circles line until now.

at first i thought he didn't care at all about the girl. then me and my boyfriend broke up and i listened to this song and saw it differently, like he might not be ready to be friends with her because he's hurt and everyone feels like he's being a jerk and the 'spinsters' are all talking like he is the bad guy.

just throwing that out there.

alright... here's what i think... ben is on a trip or something, like on vacation, it doesnt matter where he is except that he's not at home. he meets a girl and maybe they like eachother or whatever. but he goes back home and hes like wow um no thanks. so he intentionally didnt want it to work out when he went home. you wnated me to write you letters but i'd rather lose your address, and forget that we'd ever met. because even though he was on vacation, there's still paparazzi or wahtever and word will get back what he was up to. so he wants to forget about her and move on.

i have these thoughts because last summer i went to colorado (i live in PA) with my youth group. i had a boyfriend, but me and this guy from my youth group were like together non stop and yeah we liked eachother but never told eachother. i liked him a lot and i heard from other people that he liked me. but anyway the trip was over and i got back home and we never really spoke again until after me and my boyfriend at the time brok eup. but anyway i went back with my boyfriend and i was like wow what was i thinking flirting witht his guy so much and liking anotehr guy balh blah blahhh...and my friends from youthg roup were like telling my boyfrind that i was with him all the tim and stuff... so yah this is like my song to him! haha.

This song is about a girl that he was at one point in time going out with. I think hes saying how she wants him to keep in touch. He thinks that by writting letters/emails and what not would be a waste of time and would not get his point across of the fact that he does not want to keep in touch with her. There fore he believes that "information" (telling her straight up) with get thru her head quicker rather then writting her a letter.
