Tried to save myself but myself keeps slipping away

Talking to myself all the way to the station
Pictures in my head of the final destination all lined up
(all the one's that aren't allowed to stay)
Tried to save myself but myself keeps slipping away

Tried to save a place from the cuts and the scratches
Tried to overcome the complications and the catches
Nothing ever grows and the sun doesn't shine all day
Tried to save myself but myself keeps slipping away

Tried to save myself but myself keeps slipping away

My Interpretation:At first listen, I thought he was referring to a police station. However, I think the song has a deeper meaning than being arrested. Perhaps it's about Hell. I always thought the lyrics were "All lined up are the ones that are left to stay" by the way. But honestly, it probably has a more abstract meaning rather than to a literal place, hell or otherwise, more of a fear of what's about to come. A knowledge that you are about to face the consequences of your actions, yet it is still a fear of the unknown (void). You know something bad is going to happen, and it's your fault, but you don't know what it is that's going to happen.

General Comment:sometimes you just cant't expand. That day just goes by, you try to save yourself as an expander but, what can you do?

General Comment:I picture public tran listening to this, of course it's a metaphor, like in C.S. Lewis' The Great Divide people in hell are all waiting at a station (they aren't allowed to stay) for a glimpse of heaven. It could also mean carrying on with life, the narrator tries to pull himself up by his own bootstraps, but keeps "slipping away."

My Interpretation:Everyone's wrong. It's a simple song about getting on a train, the hassle you have when you miss it, and having to mingle with everyone else queuing up waiting for the next one.

General Comment:I find it interesting how he's referring to a "void", because it's impossible to say exactly what is a void.

    BTW my first post

General Comment:Trevor, yes, yes, yes. I can't belive anybody has just taken the words out of the mouth. It just makes so much sense when you're doped. Who would have thought that NIN could make you feel on top of the world?

General Comment:Honestly I don't know who I'm more ashamed to be grouped with, trevor who assumes we're all potheads, or trexor who just called someone dirty goatpoop... o_0 Anyways, good song. It's really cool how he repeats that line...

General Comment:Ok so to back up Trevor... I totally get what the dude is saying. i first listen to this song about 6 years ago and instantly fell in love with this song... As a matter of fact it's my all time favorite NIN song... anywho, I started getting stoned about 3 years after appreciating NIN amazing music... But to be honest with you, i think you get a different understanding of his music when you're insanely baked... it's like you're listening to the song for the first time all over again... Trust me when I say you get a new perspective of his music when you're stoned... and then you start to think, this guy was totally tripping when he composed this... trust me it's a great, different experience that everyone should have the opportunity to try out... "Don't knock it till you try it!" ;)

General Comment:oops, my bad! please ignore the above post. this is what I meant:

the first time I listened to Into the Void, I instantly thought about March of the Pigs because of the 'all lined up'.

also, La Mer, which has the same melody, has a line from Piggy ('nothing can stop me now').

it really makes me wonder about what he meant, I know TDS has a completely different sound, background and meaning when compared to Fragile, but these obvious similarities in the lyrics make me wonder.
