Lyrics for You Were Right as interpreted by swomprat

You Were Right Lyrics
You were wrong when you said everything's gonna be alright
You were wrong when you said everything's gonna be alright

You were right when you said all that glitters isn't gold
You were right when you said all we are is dust in the wind
You were right when you said we're all just bricks in the wall
And when you said manic depression's a frustrated mess

You were wrong when you said everything's gonna be alright
You were wrong when you said everything's gonna be alright
You were wrong when you said everything's gonna be alright

You were right when you said you can't always get what you want
You were right when you said it's a hard rain's gonna fall
You were right when you said were still running against the wind
Life goes on long after the thrill of living is gone
You were right when you said this is the end

Do you ever think about it?
Do you ever think about it?
Do you ever think about it?
Do you ever think about it?

It's made up of lines from other songs... I wish I remembered the website, cuz I don't know much of the songs they were taken from. Only one I know for certain is the "all that glitters isnt gold" from Stairway to Heaven.

Some of the lyrics I think from other songs are...

"everything's gonna be alright"
-Bryan Adams "C'mon C'mon C'mon" possibly?

"all that glitters isn't gold"
-Led Zeppelin "Stairway To Heaven"

"all we are is dust in the wind"
-Kansas "Dust In The Wind"

"we are all just bricks in the wall"
-Pink Floyd "Another Brick In The Wall"

"you can't always get what you want"
-Rolling Stones "You Can't Always Get What You Want"

Anyways this a great song and Built to Spill is a band I hope will continue to stay around for a long time.

"We're still running against the wind"
is from Bob Seger's "against the wind."
and
"And life goes on after the thrill of living is gone"
is from John Cougar Melloncamp's Jack and Diane.

oh. and i'd also like to think that,
"everything is gonna be alright," is from bob marley's "no woman no cry," not a bryan adams song.
also,
"this is the end" is from The Doors' "The End."

they're all pretty obvious. even to a 17 year old.

Ok guys, here's how it works:

- "Everything's gonna be alright"
- "No Woman, No Cry" - Bob Marley
- "All that glitters isn't gold"
- "Stairway to Heaven" - Led Zeppelin
- "All we are is dust in the wind"
- "Dust in the Wind" - Kansas
- "We're all just bricks in the wall"
- "The Wall" - Pink Floyd
- "Manic Depression's A frustrated mess"
- "Manic Depression" - Jimi Hendrix
- "You can't always get what you want"
- "You can't always get what you want" - Rolling Stones
- "It's a hard rain's gonna fall"
- "Hard Rain's gonna Fall" - Bob Dylan
- "We're still running against the wind"
- "Against The Wind" - Bob Seger
- "Life goes on long after the thrill of living is gone"
- "Jack and Diane" - John Cougar Mellencamp
- "This is the end"
- "The End" - The Doors

There you have it. All that's correct. And Doug Martsch is a musical genious to think of incorporating all of those songs into one compilation like this. It's great and just testament to his amazing ability as a song writer.

"All that glitters is not gold" is actually a quote from Tolkien, taken from "The Riddle of Strider." The word order is a bit different: Tolkien's reads, "All that is gold does not glitter>"

actually, if memory serves, the line in Stairway to Heaven, as well as many of the others, was a reference to Lord of the Rings, so you're both right. In this case he was clearly alluding to the song, not the book since all of the other lines in the song are from other songs, but the quote was originally from Tolkien.

Actually before Led Zeppelin said "all that glitters is gold" Tolkien said "all that glistens isn't gold" but before he said it, it was in the bible as "all that glistens isn't gold"

I always took this song to be a slam on Bob Marley and his rose-colored view of the world. I'm not positive that I'm familiar enough with Bob Marley to make the sweeping generalization that his view of the world is rose colored, but I think it's safe to say that Doug Martsch doesn't necessarily believe "Everything's gonna be alright." Even strictly within the context of the song, the only lyrics he disagree with are Marley's and the rest of the lyrics he quotes are more or less cynical or pessimistic. The closest Doug Martsch has come to agreeing with Bob Marley off the top of my head is in the song off the Built To Spill/Caustic Resin EP where he says "In a world that's so bad, it's not hard to feel good."

To add a personal note, this song is probably most single-handedly responsible for the loss of my belief in the idea that "Everything's gonna be alright," terrorist attacks and natural disasters notwithstanding.

Bob, while definatly idealistic, did not have a "rose colored" view of the world. he sang alot about opression and fighting for freedom. The everything is going to be allright line is in a ton of songs. I feel it is more a refference to the lulling to sleep that today's pop culture has done to us. The world is a harsh place and knowing that is half the battle. Looking back, a lot of artist had it right, from zeppelin to the doors.

I think he's just responding to the songs. I guess he thinks Bob Marley is wrong, but everyone else is right.

if we're arguing about whose variation of "
all that glitters isn't gold" came first, then i'm *fairly* sure that shakespeare came before tolkien ;).

bob marley NEVER wrote a bad song and he was NEVER wrong. this artist 'built to spill' is trying to get rich of compiling great songs into one. This song is an insult to every artist. bob marley WASNT put into the hollywood walk of fame because he was wrong. he was put into the walk of fame because he is THE BEST artist there every was and will be . he was brilliant and he was briliant because he didnt listen to little people like 'built to spill' who arnt even famous. marley was and allways will be the greatest artist of all time

Damn, "aRealFake" is an idiot.

I think this song is about a breakup or a depression and just being able to relate your life by the music you hear. When you're in a good mood, happy music like Marley. When you're down and out, then negative lyrics in songs stand out as truth a whole hell of a lot more.
