Lyrics for Champagne Supernova as interpreted by kevin

Champagne Supernova Lyrics
How many special people change
How many lives are living strange
Where were you while we were getting high?
Slowly walking down the hall
Faster than a cannon ball
Where were you while we were getting high?

Some day you will find me
Caught beneath a landslide
In a champagne supernova in the sky
Some day you will find me
Caught beneath a landslide
In a champagne supernova
A champagne supernova in the sky

Wake up the dawn and ask her why
A dreamer dreams she never dies
Wipe that tear away now from your eye
Slowly walking down the hall
Faster than a cannon ball
Where were you while we were getting high?

Some day you will find me
Caught beneath a landslide
In a champagne supernova in the sky
Some day you will find me
Caught beneath a landslide
In a champagne supernova
A champagne supernova

'cause people believe that they're
Gonna get away for the summer
But you and I, we'll never die
The world's still spinning round
We don't know why
Why, why, why, why

How many special people change
How many lives are living strange
Where were you while we were getting high?
Slowly walking down the hall
Faster than a cannon ball
Where were you while we were getting high?

Some day you will find me
Caught beneath a landslide
In a champagne supernova in the sky
Some day you will find me
Caught beneath a landslide
In a champagne supernova
A champagne supernova

'cause people believe that they're
Gonna get away for the summer
But you and I, we'll never die
The world's still spinning round
We don't know why
Why, why, why, why

How many special people change
How many lives are living strange
Where were you while we were getting high?
We were getting high
We were getting high
We were getting high
We were getting high
We were getting high
We were getting high
We were getting high
We were getting high
We were getting high

The song itself is open for interpretation but I read that he came up with the title while listening to a Pixies album titled "Supernova" and watching a documentary on French Champagne.

I listen to this song right every time I get high. It's the best song to listen to, to help you get even higher. I believe this song is about potheads like myself who like to get high all the time. People that don't smoke always say that potheads don't ever do anything. But where were they when we were getting high? What could they possibly be doing that could be better than getting high? This song to me is clearly about loving to get high and livin it up.

Noel&Liam say...Champagne Supernova- "When I was writing that, I remember going to visit Meg, who was living with some chicks down in Maida Vale, in her old flat. I was living in a hotel in Marylebone High Street and had just been kicked out of my flat in Chiswick, for being drunk and disorderly. Anyway, I went over to Meg´s. I wasn´t seeing her, she was just a mate and, this may sound really corny but I had the music and melody for the song in my head but I didn´t have any words. While I was around there we were listening to a Pixies album called, I think it´s... Supernova. As we were listening to this album, we were watching a documentary about where they make Champagne in France. You may laugh but it´s true. I was there drunk going, `Champagne supernova? Yeah man´ and to this day, everyone´s going, `But what does it mean?´. I can´t be arsed to explain it cos it sounds really corny. Some of the lyrics were written when I was out of it. There´s the words: `Someday you will find me caught beneath a landslide in a champagne supernova in the sky.'"

"That´s probably as psychedelic as I´ll ever get. It means different things when I´m in different moods. When I´m in a bad mood being caught beneath a landslide is like being suffocated. The song is a bit of an epic. It´s about when you´re young and you see people in groups and you think about what they did for you and they did nothing. As a kid, you always believed the Sex Pistols were going to conquer the world and kill everybody in the process. Bands like The Clash just petered out. Punk rock was supposed to be the revolution but what did it do? When we started we decided we weren´t going to do anything for anybody, we just thought we´d leave a bunch of great songs. But some of the words are about nothing. One is about Bracket The Butler who used to be on Camberwick Green, or Chipley or Trumpton or something. He used to take about 20 minutes to go down the hall. And then I couldn´t think of anything that rhymed with hall apart from cannonball, so I wrote, `Slowly walking down the hall, faster than a cannonball' and people were like, Wow, fuck man.' There´s also the line, `Where were you while we were getting high?´ because that´s what we always say to each other. But the number of people who´ve started clubs called Champagne Supernova is fuckin´ unbelievable."

Well even if he didn't write it to mean anything, my perception is this: It could be asking his friend where we was when all the other cronies and he were out having fun. Or, later on in life when his addiction is at it's climax, someone will find him, at that point and try to help him or what not...anyway if that doesn't make sense, it's ok lol. Don't fret over nothing... this song is SUCH a masterpiece though!

This is so Beatles. The chord progress is so amazingly basic and they made a masterpiece out of it.

Noal Gallagher wrote how the song isnt about anything and how stupid it is when people say its more than that. One of my favorite things he says about it is this :
"He used to take about 20 minutes to go down the hall. And then I couldn't think of anything that rhymed with 'hall' apart from 'cannonball'. so I wrote 'Slowly walking down the hall/ Faster than a cannonball' and people were like, 'Wow, f , man'."

The first lines are to me (sorry oasis, but this is my personal interpretation), that you have good pals, and a year, to maybe five years down the line, those pals are off doing their own thing. Special to you, but strange to your life. Once teenagers and blowing on bongs, now representing a company with some responsibility Some, at school chose the straight as a die route - for example, head boys, goody two shoes etc. Others took a little blow. Main thing though, your final year was a unit, and the first three lines show the differences already apparent before leaving high school.

I have read Noel's expalanation for "Cannonball" and it makes sense. School corridors, or the little nightclub we went to on a tuesday night.

Then it all packs in on you. I went to university, as a well educated sixth year, with the intent to use my intellect to drive me. Then, information overload occurrs. Intelligence vs politics vs people vs reality vs non reality vs sociology vs simplicity. A landslide. So escape. Somewhere better. A land of Champagne (we would all drink if we could afford, even though its not that nice) and off the earth/planet to a better world.

Next mortality:
A summer holiday. How many will it take before you realise that this life is it. And "Why, Why, Why" Live life for what it is "wipe that tear away now from your eye"

All in all, this song obviously meant a lot to me. And of course many other people. My friend, a writer once reminded me that, " Every story has many, perhaps thousands, of interpretations, and not one reader can see what the writer seen while writing"

I know there's no real meaning, but here's what I always got out of it. This song always came across to me as a song about a friend who died while you were getting high. She died sort of nearby, and if everyone who was smoking had been paying attention to where she went, they would have been able to save her. They keep asking (where was she while we were getting high?) Their lives are all shaken up and they're all filled with guilt for the rest of their days (How many special people change? How many lives are living strange?). This song is a kind of looking back about it, and denying (But you and I will never die ) and wishing against her death (A dreamer dreams, she never dies). The champagne supernova is heaven, where'll they'll meet again, but he'll still feel covered by the guilt, even in heaven (Caught beneath the landslide). Finally, for those of us who smoke, the slowly-down-the-hall/faster-cannonball is about the feeling in your mind and body when you all rushed in too late to save her, like you're floating in slow-motion, or your body is moving faster than your mind can keep pace.

This song is so meaningless to some, and so perfect fitting to others...if you don't understand it when you hear it for the first time, you never will...its something more than just your ears hearing the words, its about an emotion, almost. Its a mental sense of knowing what he;s talking about without really "knowing" it at all.

You've got to be kidding me! This song and this band both SUCK! This song and every song of theirs I've ever heard is completely meaningless. It's one thing to write a fun rock song with lyrics that weren't supposed to mean anything--just for kicks. But I hate it when a band spews out nonsense like this hoping that idiotic fans will think it has some deep significance. All Oasis is capable of is making pathetic attempts to sound like the Beatles and even more pathetic attempts to create a bad boy reputation like the Rolling Stones. So glad I haven't heard anything from these losers in a long time.
