Lyrics for Maria as interpreted by alitoc

Maria Lyrics
She moves like she don't care
Smooth as silk, cool as air
Ooh it makes you wanna cry
She doesn't know your name
And your heart beats like a subway train
Ooh it makes you wanna die

Ooh, don't you wanna take her?
Ooh, wanna make her all your own?

Maria, you've gotta see her
Go insane and out of your mind
Regina, Ave Maria
A million and one candle lights

I've seen this thing before
In my best friend and the boy next door
Fool for love and fool on fire

Won't come in from the rain
She's oceans running down the drain
Blue as ice and desire

Don't you wanna make her?
Ooh, don't you wanna take her home?

Maria, you've gotta see her
Go insane and out of your mind
Regina, Ave Maria
A million and one candle lights

Ooh, don't you wanna break her?
Ooh, don't you wanna take her home?

She walks like she don't care
Walkin' on imported air
Ooh, it makes you wanna die

Maria, you've gotta see her
Go insane and out of your mind
Regina, Ave Maria
A million and one candle lights

Maria, you've gotta see her
Go insane and out of your mind
Regina, Ave Maria
A million and one candle lights

great tune - but hardly anything deep - just about a sexy babe you fancy.

Man, i first heard this song when i was really young and I didn't know who Blondie were. At first i thought it was sung by a bloke! It made sense that way. It's one of my favourite songs ever. Oh so catchy!

I remember hearing it was about some guy in the band having a crush on a girl in catholic school. But before I even heard that I thought it was one of those songs about a girl who is beautiful and all the guys in high school like her and the girls want to be her or portraying how she is to a girls POV.

I like the whole "naughty catholic girl" explanation. I think that makes a lot of sense. I do love this song.

First of all, I think it's "Latina", not "Regina". (:

Secondly, I fucking adore this song.
It's obviously about a girl that eveyone wants and no one can have. =D

Did anyone notice that he lyric "...like a millionaire/walking on imported air" was being used before on Walk Like Me (Autoamerican)? Stylistically it's also reminiscent to this song.

the entire time i listen to these lyrics and especially in the tempo n beat that this was written in evokes exhiliration in me.

I guess this is a personal reaction solely, and to me what this brings to mind is early infatuation, as in early HiSchL or when we (we meaning "us humans" or wat i identify with when i say "us humans" in ths western US culture.. blah blah).. when we start becoming aware of the fact that some wunderfilled creatures exist and they are not like us males and that us males get very excited thinking about the magnificence of these creaturres.. n tis not solely physical (meaning not totally their physical attributes nor their physical attractiveness to us males nor just "testosterone" on our side, tho certainly that does play a big part of the early wonderment, esp as we develop as teenagers) .. it's a blend of emotional and spiritual, because "we males" want to please and be noticed and approved of by
these "beauties".

I realize now, when i say "these beauties" that the LEAST of what i mean is mere physical beauty, sure it helps! but after we get to know that person residing in that body, it's an inward presence, as in their soul or what lurks beneath that is the real joy! As in: DOES that person residing in that body shine light on me and bring out my best and my continued desire for hanging out with her .. or am i perceiving just "blowup doll" ..

as a direct example, when i think back to my own personal HiSchL yrs and why i am taking the time to comment on this tune and what it evokes in me.. i am distinctly reminded of "my personal neraida" that now exists only in my heart, that was like cool flowing water when "sliding gracefully" down those high celeing-inged antiseptic corridors that we always remember when we get caught in nostalgia.. and how i crushed on her for awhile and how i was repulsed when she became another guy's "regular" ..
we did share some classes together and we seemed to click but at the time i was too chicken hearted and too immature to realize that the feelings were mutual and that we coulda-shoulda dated or at least hung out as friends..
Many yrs later wen we met again (now as adults with our own respective families and respective spouses) we compared notes and noted many mutual regrets on both our sides. Granted we also realized each other's immature shortcomings and how those might have led to an early split given each other's stubborness and bullheadedness in those early formation years ..

but this comment is about what this song means to me and that it captures the total essence of that time, knowing of her flowing serene gracefull presence in same building and the kind heart that resided in there and the physical appearance was a bonus.

Back to these lyrics, my take is that it's sung fr a guy's perspective mostly, altho
when she sings she has seen this "thing" B4 with her best friend n the boy nex door, that's obv fr a female perspective..
the song was written by the band's keyboardist and features a relationship that the band's drummer, Clem Burke was having with the actress Regina Russell.

Now if we assume that ths is sung fr a teenage guy's infatuation or "crush" perspective it makes perfect sense..
he WANTS others to note the splendor, .. The Wonder that he is witnessing wen the guy repeats ovr n again: "have U seen her?" .. and the fact that she represents a higher standard than anything he's taken into his heart before now, and the substance or the weight of it in his emotional center, his heart let's say, .. it's a live thing to him, from his percpective, he's perceiving her to be a palpable wonder in his heart and wants to announce it and share it with the world, "hanging the flag" of his announcement on his castle's marble arch and running up the ramparts and the battlements of his solitary or secluded existence and coming up outta his heart's solitairy "castle" that he's been sequesterin himself into, becz he's witnessing wonder .. perhaps only to him though!!!

regina refers to the Regina Russell the actress,

ave maria is back into ths guy's announcement of the pure the "el naturel", the "natural wonder"
that IS the essence of wat a woman nets to a man, his sustencace, his nurturement, his relief, his sanctuary, his saf harbor n rest, his desire and reason for exuberance n the "Don Quixote" syndrome
