Lyrics for Opiate as interpreted by Terminal

Opiate Lyrics
Choices always were a problem for you
What you need is someone strong to guide you
Deaf and blind and dumb and born to follow
what you need is someone strong to guide you
like me
like me
like me
like me

If you want to get your soul to heaven
trust in me
now Don't you judge or question
You are broken now
but faith can heal you
Just do everything I tell you to do
Deaf and blind and dumb and born to follow
what you need is someone strong to guide you
Deaf and blind and dumb and born to follow
let me lay my holy hand a hand upon you

My God's will
becomes me
When he speaks
he speaks through me
He has needs
like I do
We both want
to rape you

Jesus Christ why don't you come save my life now
Open my eye and blind me with your light now
Jesus Christ why don't you come save my life now
Open my eye and blind me with your light now

If you want to get your soul to heaven
trust in me
now Don't you judge or question
You are broken now
but faith can heal you
Just do everything I tell you to do

Jesus Christ why don't you come save my life now
Open my eye and blind me with your light now
Jesus Christ why don't you come save my life now
Open my eye and blind me with your light now

Deaf and blind and dumb and born to follow
let me lay my holy hand a hand upon you

My God's will
becomes me
When he speaks
he speaks through me
He has needs
like I do
We both want
to rape you

Hidden track [6:10]
I had a friend once
he took some acid
now he thinks he's a fire engine
it's ok until he pisses on your lighter
it kinda smells kinda cool kinda funny anyway
Satan Satan
Satan Satan
Satan.....

I had a friend once
he took some Ecstasy
tried to marry me and everyone in the room
he was sorta loving
kinda caring
kinda tried to fuck my lazy-boy
it got a bit messy
all over the curtains
arm-chair covers,throw pillows,and carpeting

This song details the shenanigans that go on in religion. Like the oh so true phrase goes: "Religion is the opiate for the masses" this song basically builds upon that. Its told through the point of view of a preacher or reverend, who preaches all of the lies that are told in the Christian religion. Its like sheep blindly following something thats not there, since God "speaks" thorugh the preacher to the religion's followers. Its an amazing song that shares my views on Religion and things of that nature.

This song is a satirical representation of organized religion, and it's control of the people. As the deaf, dumb and blind followers are led, they are being violated. This song is a bit dramatic, with rants of God wanting to rape the listener and blind them with his lies, but it does provide a thoughtful message into Tool's feelings towards hypocrisy and corruption in the church. The title, Opiate, is allusion to Karl Marx's quote "Religion is the opiate of the masses"
As for the etymology of the word opiate, it can be traced back through latin, then greek to opos; which mean vegetable juice.

boy can i relate to this song. I was a reverend at one time, and they gave me the boot cause i went to a concert the church was protesting against. Now im happy living my life as an atheist. This song is so true, as a person who has been involved in all the religious bullshit i can tell you how corrupt and ungodly it truly is, but i dont need to cause maynard has already done it for me...

Hey, Achilles Libertine, I wonder about that sometimes too. But, you just have to remember that Maynard is not a prophet and you shouldn't listen to every word he says.

ahh, karl marx is great eh? religion is the opiate of the masses.

If you want to get your soul to heaven,
trust in me.
Don't judge or question.
You are broken now,
but faith can heal you.
Just do everything I tell you to do.

..basically goes exactly how marx said, religion is just a ploy to get people to act a certain way by giving them fake bribes like " you'll go to heaven and be happy! just do this this and this.." wee. tool fuckin rawks.

This can be related to Brave New World, by Aldous Huxley. He has influenced musicians before. Basically, in his book, Huxley compares religion to a drug called "soma," which is an opiate without any side effects. A character, Mustapha Mond, who is the "World Controller" for Central Europe, could be compared to the Pope or even God. He holds a large amount of the knowledge that is kept from the feeble minds of the populace of the World State, who are kept from anything that would cause them to question anything. Mond says, " 'Religion without tears - that's what soma is.' "

Therefore, it draws a parallel to this song, that religion is merely a tool to control someone, in the same way that a drug can be used. I just wrote a research paper on Brave New World, and come to think of it, I should have written it on religion as related to the book. Damn.

I just wrote a paper on Brave New Word as well, and I understand what you're saying, Bizarre, but I don't think Opiate was written with the book in mind. Just about your everyday preachers and religion.

Maynard is obviously anti-religion and that is based upon the fact that most (if not all) religions somewhere in the middle have a market plan attached to where you are supposed to give away your money will to only later to find out that the persons a child molesting fuck head screwing you for another fatass dollar. Still most people don't realize and remain blissfully ignorant.

I really don't think that Maynard is against all religion. Here me out now. I heard on a live bootleg of a concert from Houston, him saying that the spiritual leaders had good ideas, but they were just agents of thier religion. "Never trust an agent.", he said. Now I'm NOT Maynard, therefor I can not speak for him.

My personal beliefs are basically anti-church because for people raised the way I was, church is just a place that you have to wake up early and miss your fucking cartoons for! I recall ONE time ever feeling really moved at church, and I was nine years old! We need to find our religion inside of ourselves because if we are not comfortable with how we worship, we WILL rebel.

whoever said that this song was too dramatic didn't pay attention to those cathilic priests laying their holy hands on the alter boys. the song may not be against religion per say, just organized religion. when you need someone to tell you how to connect to any greater being, you are just a slave. not a sheep, a slave. just put a barcode on your neck and be done with it.

I'm a Christian. Religion is not what gets people to heaven, and also heaven isn't why people follow religion. That is because it doesn't really get them anywhere. Heaven is a promise with salvation. Many "Christians" don't follow Christ, they follow religion. These are usually the decieved Christians who are bent on the Religion and think that everyone who makes mistakes automatically gos to hell and "all teenagers are evil, evil I tells ya." They are really judgmental and obviously don't know why Jesus made himself a sacrifice in the first place. I agree that there is a lot of hypocricy in the church also. There are hypocrites everywhere. I am sorry if you guys have only met these kinds of so-called Christians. I am tired now, so I am going to leave. -later-

An Opiate is a narcotic substance to clarify things for all of you. It is derived from the Latin, through Greek opos, which mean "vegetable juice"...but just think how the Greeks were conotating the word...a liquid extract that is vegetal in nature was most likely refering to a mind altering, narcotic (sedating) substance coming from some plant or herb. The tie to Brave New World was great because the overlying theme of a sedating vacation pill called "Soma" (an opiate) neatly parallels organized religions' promise of a happy place called Heaven, a place away from home (reality)...it almost retails at the same price, as well: your soul. Karl Marx was outlining this ideology for you in the previously mentioned quote.
