You'll never understand,
The meaning in the end,
We're standing at the gate,
You'll meet the darker fate,

Your purity and rage,
Your passion and your hate,
You promised more than bliss,
With your God and with your kiss,

I'm on my knees,
I beg your mercy,
My soul is my loss,
I'm well hung from your cross.

Take me,
Take me in your arms my love and rape me,
Don't hide behind your rage
I know you love me,
And always will,

You're my possession,
Of that my love there really is no question,
Don't hide behind your rage
I know you love me
And always will,

My better half it's true
Has seen the darker side of you,
Innocence stripped away,
At least I've the brighter fate...

Song Meaning:Sean Brennan (founder, songwriting and musician on all CDs) has said in interviews that this is about an abusive person who hides behind piety, conservatism to justify that abuse (hence some religious references, but not a condemnation of religion).

General Comment:London After Midnight fans are not aware that these songs that seem to talk about personal relationships and the like are not at all what it seems. Sean Brennan is an activist for animal and human rights.
He doesn't agree with the US governing system. Now try to think about how these lyrics can apply to this.
It just takes a little more though to see things in a perspective away from the whole "I love you, you don't love me, vice versawhatever" concept.

My Interpretation:Well, if you think about it, this could also be a song about sadomasochistic sex, the speaker being the masochist and his partner the sadist. Think about it - "Take me/Take me in your arms my love and break me..."

I dunno. Maybe I'm just perverted.

General Comment:I think this means that at death when he is being judge by God (if believed in that sorta thing, they seem like a christian band) that God has a dark and light side but fair in the end. He has the power to love and hate, but always love in the end. He is asking for forgiveness and he his being judge by not what he seems but what he really is shown by "...innocence stripped away..."

    or

it can be about a bad relationship about him giving himself to someone, loving them so much that he will let them do what ever they want to him as long as they are happy.

General Comment:This song means to me the end of a relationship. It reminds me of a friend of mine's situation.

"You'll never understand the meaning in the end" suggests that "the other" is not understanding that the "narrator" has cut off the relationship or is pretending to not understand.

"we're standing at the gate you'll meet the darker fate" makes me think that the other is using various abusive acts mostly manipulation to keep the relationship together, but the narrator knows that the other is in the wrong.

"your purity and rage, your passion and your hate" makes me think of a love/hate situations. The other has a rage and has violated the narrator in some way, then played the victim and acted like they were very sorry.

"you promised more than bliss, with your god and with your kiss" the narrator feels cheated by what the other has said and also by how the other has changed the narrator during the relationship.

"I'm on my knees, I beg your mercy, my soul is my loss,I'm well hung from your cross," The narrator has not the courage to stand up to the bullshit and manipulation, even though they know that it's wrong. The narrator has asked for it to stop but is being worn down by the other.

"take me in your arms my love and rape me" suggests that the other has tried to rekindle the relationship through bad methods, and has eventually tried the "make-up" move. It suggests intimacy which is desired, but more strongly not wanted.

"don't hide behind your rage I know you love me, and always will" suggests that the narrator wishes for the anger of the other to end, and for them to just admit that they are hurting so badly.

"you're my possession, of that my love there really is no question" suggests that the narrator sees the other as a material possesion, and wants to "hoard" the other away like a possesion and not wanting to cut the strings completely.

"my better half it's true has seen the darker side of you,
innocence stripped away, at least I've the brighter fate..." the narrator knows the other is in the wrong and that the other is no longer innocent,
and that he/she is a bad person. The narrator is leaving, and knows that he/she has a better future without the other.

Sorry, my english is not too good.

General Comment:I'm probably wrong, but I'm just guessing...

I think it's comparing his love as pure and innocent, and the other person's love as "darker" or less innocent... Said by "we're standing at the gate... you'll meet the darker fate"
I'm also going to guess and say that the impurity of that person's love is masked by other, more innocent things.
"my better half it's true has seen the darker side of you"
Yet He still wants this person's love.

    Sorry, I'm probably wayyy wrong.

General Comment:I've never thought about it before, so I'm just thinking this up of the top of my head.

I think it's about someone who's on the 'darker' side, and meets someone who's more pure and admirable. They fall in love, but the first person ends up rejected eventually. The first person then feels captured. They think the other person owns them, and they realize that the one they loved wasn't so pure and perfect after all..

General Comment:I think it means that someone's giving their partner the illusion of ownership. S/he wants him/her to not hide who they are anymore and to show how they feel, giving them more control over the "dominant" party.
