This song has a very simple and distinct meaning. If you are a true VNV fan you will realize that one of the Drakangel remixes is titled "Gabriel"...and if you know anything about the catholic religion, you will notice the many references to the fallen angel Gabriel... It's about his fall from heaven, and sentence to remain on earth. The struggle within between what he once was and what he has become...and more importantly what he is to do now. I would write more but I am late for work so, I shall elaborate at a later time.

Hey, anybody notice how of all the Angels ever mentioned inthe Bible, only 5 of them ever had names? Gabriel, Michael, Uriel, Raphael, and Tomozarela.
Demontear, I never heard of one named Azrael.
Maybe we're both talking about the same dude.
NYDanegel, Gabriel never NEVER fell from Heaven. He was the one who assisted God in stopping Feriluce's rebellion. Feriluce was Satan's name before HE fell from Heaven. Trust me.

Satan is Lucifer, Lucifer means Morning Star, he was most definitely God's most favored angle, but fell from grace when he lead a revolt in heaven (and fell into hell, or anywhere that was not heaven). I have an intense distruss of any site that proclaims it has the truth (Bible-truths? more like bible NOT truths. Ha.)
I think that the Dark-Angel here isn't Gabriel or Azrael, those are likely remix names because they sound awesome and biblical, but rather, any sort of person who can no longer trust their god. To me, it's about a sort of struggle one can not reconcile in himself, how a God can be so great but still allow good people to suffer. It's about seeing the limits of something that proclaims it wants to do good, but meanwhile only hampers the ability of those in its thrall to rid themselves of the world's ills.
Like a lot of songs by VNVN, I find this one is a call for strength, in a Nietzschean sense. Falling from grace, or faith if you will, is merely a sign of wanting to do good in a better manner than religion; one could even go as far as to say that religion in fact does HARM.
And speaking of Nietzsche, has anyone read anything of his (and I mean, read correctly, not under the stupid assumption that he is an anti-semite; he's not anti-semetic, merely anti-faith)?

One more side note, regarding the bible website Xav put up; I couldn't make any sense of it. Technicalities of the bible aside, what's important is that a couple of micks raised Catholic (ie. VNVN) probably understand the devil to be a fallen angel. Here theology is not the central issue, it's a vehicle for expression.

This is just a very personal interpretation. The song is about an entity/angel/demon/man who has lived as an anonymous, helpless human. Finding his divine connection, he finds out he's sent from God to release anger upon the world, to bring justice to everyone hurt and helpless, for people who were just like him. This may cause more pain, because the war will be total, but it's needed and he asks people to realize that, but they can only do that when they aren't awake and in their logic, self centered state.

The person said_touch is completely 100% wrong in every imaginable way.
Of course you can easily interpret the song as talking about America, it fits very well.
VNV Nation was asked about 9/11/2001. They were asked if they thought
their music was prophetic regarding it. They said, no, that didn't ever cross their mind.
Clearly there is a universality to their music and their message and can mean many faceted things to the authors and the fans; don't limit it to your narrow-minded liberal-hippie veganite dreams.

To the people that supported Morphed's view that the darkangel was Gabriel you need to learn more about the subject. Gabriel was a messenger angel, not a fallen angel and he worked for God not man. Michael was the angel of war. Then there was the angel of death (I don't think that he was given a name) and Lucifer an angel that after his rebellion was called Satan or the Devil. There was a rebellion in heaven after which Lucifer took 1/3 (or was it 2/3rds) of the angels (later referred to as demons) with him. The Bible makes it known that Lucifer has power and influence over the earth and humans until the final judgement when he will be cast into "the lake of fire" or hell for eternity. When I first heard this song I thought it was just Ronan talking as himself, but I'm not sure. Then I started viewing it as just a concept of a darkangel, or anything/anyone that wants peace and good at the cost of doing something not traditionally considered good such as war. This is the essence of justice as technically justice is often the concept of two wrongs making a right. I've also contemplated that it actually was an angel, but every time I thought I had the answer I could find parts of the song that contradicted my belief. My friend actually thinks the song is about Hitler which goes with the lyrics about as well as any other theory, however, I think the line "I only came here seeking peace" throws it off. If you think that its about an actual angel it would have to either be Lucifer, Michael, or the angel of Death, but I think each scenario falls apart at some point in the song. VNV writes such solid lyrics that we may be taking for granted that the song is lyrically perfect, or Biblically correct. VNV is coming here next week, maybe I'll ask Ronan, but something tells me he won't go into it. I asked him a question about the "future pop" label last time he was here and he made it clear that he had had enough of that issue. I understood though. I wouldn't want to be asked the same questions all the time either. Something like the the meaning of a song may be either to personal to share, or perhaps he doesn't want to ruin the mystique of the song by not leaving it open for interpretation. Oh well, we'll see.

okay, first off, you need to fully understand the meaning of the song Honour before you can attempt this one. Fireinthedawn has an excellent post, and if you read it, you will understand this song. This song is about the rapture coming january 2012. when that time comes, war between heaven and hell will break out on earth. man will have no god to protect him during this time. dark angels are angels that would rather fight for the good of man, than for god. they will come down, and fight amoung us. there are many reasons why thy would choose to leave god's side, and one of them is scorn. This song is written from the 1st person perspective of one of these dark angels, and is only expressing its reason.

I've read through every comment here, laughed at the idiots who think their interpretation is the only one (Said_corpse, that's mainly to you) and have to chime in with a variation nobody seems to have mentioned yet.
This could be about Hitler.
"Give me time I will be clear.

"I'm in a mood for total war." Is self explanatory.
"So many years I stood among the thoughts and tears of those I served. " Before he became a dictator, and was involved as a soldier in WWI.
The rest of it is all very similar, but as most of VNV Nation's songs, also very vague, so it's open to liberal interpretation.
I can't say someone telling me they're part dragon part dark angel impresses me, but I can say that being cruel to them is just as much an immature response.

I think this song is about Caesar recanting his empire, and its eventual fall. It also more generally applies to all empires, most pertinently the present Pax Americana. The next song on the cd (Arclight) is about a new empire being formed from the ashes of the old.

This song strikes me, a Goth-to-the-core 21-year old, as a perfect description of the vampire Lestat. If any of you have ever read of him and his Troop of Beloveds, you might understand what I mean. For those who haven't, he was barely out of his teens when Made, and from the first he was indestructible and utterly powerful. Yet he had never wanted to be Made, and seeks love and redemption throughout his never-ending existence as a vampire. I'm very similar. I have done a great deal that is viewed as evil by today's "society", and though I don't seek redemption or forgiveness, i do still seek love and the company of other darklings. If you've heard Blutengel's Angels of the Dark you'll know what I really want: to leave this dying world behind and start a new life, one without pain or sacrifice, where those of the Dark can live without persecution.

Perhaps he is not speaking of being scorned himself, but of seeking to help those who have been scorned, making war against those who scorn others (like said_corpse!)
Azrael is the angel of death, who is writing names in a book as they are born and erasing them as they die. Perhaps he writes what you have suffered as well?

You don't even know that you are restrained and wounded, anymore.

You will see the wrong you've gone through, and you will rebel and war against a lack of justice and a system of lies. It also says how the 'Dark Angel' has realized he has come to look for peace, for everyone to be free and unrestrained, yet it seems he only came to leave again, because he sees none.

Also, Azrael is the Angel of Death. C: He does indeed 'exist'. Wikipedia it.
Sariel, Raguel, Remiel, Zadkiel, Jophiel, Haniel, Metatron, and Chamuel. are also 'existing' archangels, along with Uriel, Gabriel, Michael, Raphael and Azrael. C:

Metatron was also known as "Enoch".

But yeah, the song is beautiful on its own, even without any interpretations.

correction on Morphed. VNV Nation subtitled the song Azrael.Azrael is typically known as one of the names of the angel of death. The name literally means Assistant(helper) of God. Azrael is an Angel of the Cherubic Order in the Third Sphere of Heaven. Exodus 12:12 explains that the first borns of egypt will be taken..Azrael is the one that took them.

also if your talking about Lucifer being Satan..thats pretty much the popular story..In Isaiah when they talk about Lucifer..its talking about the fall of the king of babylon. Lucifer is latin in orgin meaning Light Bearer. The angel that fell from Heaven is Helel of the Cherubic Order. And Satan was an angel of the Serphim order. About the Bible.. there is more scriptures than what has been cannonicalized. Look up Enoch..Tobias or Tobit..Judas..Raziel..ect.. the bible is just a group of stories that want to teach you lessons that deal with being good and worshipping "Jesus"
Gabriel is not a fallen Angel..Gabriel is an angel of the Seraphim order as the General of The Serphim and Cherubim Law and act as the Chief Messenger..he was the one who was the voice of the burning bush, wrestled Abraham preventing him from killing Isaac.
