This song is truly awesome because it's the greatest thing when you love someone so much and because of that, you think you can hear them laughing 2,000 light years away. I've had that feeling once or twice, thank god someone put it into words.

He wrote this for his wife. He met her in the early years of touring. He only saw her when he was in her town. So 2000 light years away. It's soooo sweet.

This song is awesome , one of my fav Green day songs, i can realte to it, which i guess is why i like it so damn much!. It kinda sums up how you feel when you love someone and they aint near you enough. Its a sweet song.

I've always loved this song, and it's always managed to end up mirroring my relationships. Freshman year, a girl and I started talking, her name was Beatrice Samudio, unfortunately, she had to move to Texas soon after. She was the first girl I had ever liked in that way, and we kept in touch for a looong time afterwards, through letters, phone, etc. Sadly, though, we've lost contact, her phone number has changed and I am not getting any replies to my letters. It ticks me off, too, b/c if she really did care about me then she would contact me, but anyway....back to the song, haha. I can relate to it even more now, b/c the girl I am currently with, Stacy, also had to move, for really serious personal reasons I am not at liberty to share. She's in South Carolina now, I am in Pennsylvania, not quite 2000 light years away, but close enough. It really doesn't matter though, b/c we are as close as we are. We really care about each other, and it was more or less assumed that we were staying together regardless of the distance between us. Billie Joe is one of my musical idols (the only one surpassing him being Kurt Cobain), and I am hoping that his love life continues to mirror mine as it is so far. :-)

Billy Joe wrote this song about his future wife after he kissed her for the first time. He met her in Green Day's early years, and kept in touch with her. He knocked her up and they got married. This is such a good song about being in love with someone who lives a long ways away, so far that it seems like you're on different planets. Great song by a great band.

even though it is about a girl that lives far away.....i feel that exact same way about a girl ....but she goes to the same school with me and is even in some of my classes.....but i know i can never have her so she is 2000 light years away

I don't know if anyone else got this from the song, and I'm not saying I know it's what it's supposed to mean; and I hate to put the whole Masturbation spin on it but here it goes. One night I was sitting in my room staring at the walls, I had been up all damn night long like the song says and was thinking about a certain girl all while I listened to Kerplunk. I began to think about how what was happening, sounded like the song was narrating what I was going through at the time. I began to laugh and breath hard (which also kind of sounded like the song), I grabbed myself kind of self-mockingly and sang "She holds my Malakite so tight so... Never let go". Therefore I feel (and I'm probably wrong) that most of what you guys said is true, except that while he was thinking of that special girl he was probably Masturbating while imagining it was actually her. By the way I can also relate to the whole it just being a girl that's out of my league and I could never muster up the courage to tell her how I feel.

im not condraticting anyone by saying this, im actually just really interested about what ppl have written here, i noticed how alot of you said that you were close to the person physically but didnt feel close anyway, do you think it could be ment mentally? like you feel the person is way out of your legue or so far away with their lives (eg leading completely different lifestyles) that you dont feel close. well thats just my interperatation anyway. i'll go now. lol. byeeee

I remember the first time I found out what malakite is. I was listening to this song, and my girlfriend at the time told me it was a gem stone. When I asked what color it was, it just blew my mind. I love Green Day.
