25 years of my life and still
I'm trying to get up that great big hill of hope
For a destination
I realized quickly when I knew I should
That the world was made up of this
Brotherhood of man
For whatever that means
So I cry somethimes when I'm lying in bed
To get it all out what's in my head
Then I start feeling a little peculiar
So I wake in the morning and I step
Outside I take deep breath
I get real high
Then I scream from the top of my lungs
What's goin' on
And I say hey...
And I say hey what's goin' on
And I say hey...
I said hey what's goin' on
And I try, oh my God do I try
I try all the time
In this institution
And I pray, oh my God do I pray
I pray every single day
For a revolution
So I cry sometimes when I'm lying in my bed
To get it all out what's in my head
Then I start feeling a little peculiar
So I wake in the morning and I step outside
I take a deep breaththen I get real high
Then I scream from the top of my lungs
What's goin' on
And I say hey...
And I say hey what's goin' on
And I say hey...
I said hey what's goin' on
And I say hey...
And I say hey what's goin' on
And I say hey...
I said hey what's goin' on
25 years of my life and still
I'm trying to get up that great big hill of hope
For a destination

My Interpretation:It is about a person who is struggling through a lot and moving on with her life. She realizes what is going on, around her world. That's just my opinion, but people probably interpret it differently.

My Interpretation:I think that this song is talking about the Illuminati. For those of you who know about the Illuminati, I'm sure it already makes sense to you. First off, numerology is huge. the number 25 (2 5=7) 7 is the most divine number. They make sure that you hear this number by placing it at the beginning and the end of the song.

"I realized quickly when I knew I should
That the world was made up of this
    Brotherhood of man"

The brotherhood is referring to the group of elite that run everything in the entertainment biz. Man is just a generic term for human kind.

When she talks about praying to God for a revolution, she is talking about how she wishes that things could be different because she realized that there is nothing that we can do, because we are powerless to the "force".and that's why she cries.

Also, if you think a little bit beyond the lyrics. MTV and VH1 both have this song on their list of "bad songs" but yet, most people agree that it's a pretty damn good song. They do this so that it might convince people to not listen to it.

Most of you reading this probably think I'm crazy, but I CHALLENGE you to just start looking into the Illuminati.. You'll be amazed at how much they control everything in our lives. Watching movies and listening to music is put on a whole other level once you have learned the secrets!

Song Comparison:Very very happy 90s karaoke song. If MTV or VH1 made a list of the happiest songs of all time, I think this would be be very high on that list.
It's right up with Daniel Boone's 'Beautiful Sunday', the Friends soundtrack and the Eagles' 'Take it Easy'. and Steppenwolf's 'Born to be Wild'.

Song Meaning:She did not know where to go, "even" after her 25 years something was missing.
When she realized that the world is in possession of men (not men and women),
    she saw she was not welcome in that world;
she sadly (cry in bed) noticed that she was not like everybody else (peculiar - perhaps different/free/lesbian?).

Then she decided that everybody else behavior is not really important and more, it is bad to her.
That was the cause of her screaming and brave asking (What's goin' on).
She explains the attempts of being a "normal" person, she tried to stay in the "normal" society (institution/preconceptions/church?).
She early warns that God will not help, because "she prayed" to him until her limits (to reinforce the fact that she used all the means society gave to her).

Finally she broke up with society (I pray every single day For a revolution).
In the context, it is clearly a non sense the sentence "pray for revolution".
It is like to substitute some thing (praying) by the other (revolution).

The "groan part" may be a reference to a delightful moment, maybe freedom, or sexual pleasure.
Of course the author opted for the generality.

General Comment:I'm just surprised by the info you said about this song being on the list of " bad songs " !!!!!! what the hell !!!!!!! , It's lietrally an amazing song !!!! , to put it on those lists is just another evidence that shows that media doesn't know about real music !!

My Interpretation:The singer feels she's spent her whole life struggling against the restraints imposed by men (the "institution"). At first it creates depression but eventually leads to a productive sort of frustration and anger. The singer shouts out her frustration

General Comment:I think this song follows that whole feminism theme that was really popular among similar female artists (e.g. melissa ethridge, indigo girls, etc.) around this period of music.

"i realized quickly when i knew i should that the world was made up of this brotherhood of man, for whatever that means"
