Lyrics for Lucky Man as interpreted by deathchurch

Lucky Man Lyrics
Happiness
More or less
It's just a change in me
Something in my liberty
Oh, my, my
Happiness
Coming and going
I watch you look at me
Watch my fever growing
I know just where I am
But how many corners do I have to turn?
How many times do I have to learn
All the love I have is in my mind?

Well, I'm a lucky man
With fire in my hands

Happiness
Something in my own place
I'm standing naked
Smiling, I feel no disgrace
With who I am

Happiness
Coming and going
I watch you look at me
Watch my fever growing
I know just who I am

But how many corners do I have to turn?
How many times do I have to learn
All the love I have is in my mind?

I hope you understand
I hope you understand

Gotta love that'll never die

Happiness
More or less
It's just a change in me
Something in my liberty
Happiness
Coming and going
I watch you look at me
Watch my fever growing
I know
Oh, my, my
Oh, my, my
Oh, my, my
Oh, my, my

Gotta love that'll never die
Gotta love that'll never die
No, no
I'm a lucky man

It's just a change in me
Something in my liberty
It's just a change in me
Something in my liberty
It's just a change in me
Something in my liberty
Oh, my, my
Oh, my, my
It's just a change in me
Something in my liberty
Oh, my, my
Oh, my, my

well, the verve were great before they went their seperate ways, fucking brilliant. richard ashcroft is a fucking amazing lyric writer.

to me, this song's mood just describes my life. it's a kind of fatal optimism. like he's trying to look on the bright side, but ultimately failing..

"happiness, more or less..."

unfortunately this song reminds me of when i was 10. the worst fucking year of my life so far. i am only 14, but hey...

fucking genius though.

To me, it reminds me of my struggles last year, that year being 7th grade, and how I just was "depressed", which I really wasn't, and kept falling in love with girls and having no self-esteem, it was an awful year. But out of all the awfulness, I came to terms with myself about love, and "All the love I have is in my mind". I'm a lucky man to have discovered this. This is one of my all-time favorite songs, and even in this MP3 ruled age, I went out and got the cd "Urban Hymns" after hearing it was awesome. Then I was really disappointed to listen and not really like any other songs except for "weeping willow" "Lucky Man" and "Bittersweet Symphony". Bummer. Damn Stones suing one of the best bands out there. Oh well, Ashcroft lives on.

slugsinthefields no offence but you are such a dumb ass, every song on Urban Hymns is fucking lyrical genius, just listen to "drugs dont work" "sonnet" or "space and time". They are all on par if not better than the three songs u named! richard ashcroft wrote the entire album on his own but released it with the group instead of solo because he knew if he released it solo he'd never be able to surpass it as an album!

An orchestral version of The Last Time.

Don't get me wrong, the stones were brilliant, but no individual song they did could eclipse any of the Verves best stuff.

The whole album is one big f*** off mind blowing trip. Anyone who has ever been to the bottom will salvage something from the songs as its just a "yeah I was f**ked uf but that's life" album. Ashcroft is a genius and his solo work is on top form too. Due another album soon please Richie boy!

Gotta love that'll never die.

Having a love makes life worth living:
"I know just who I am"
"It's just a change in me
Something in my liberty"
Happiness!

"

"
That's enough to explain the entire song, I believe. Looking for love in others will only leave you on your own in the end, (You come in on your own and you leave on your own) but if you're lucky, like our friend Richard Ashcroft, maybe one day you'll realize that "all the love [you] have is in your mind". A Lucky Man can find happiness and love in himself, since all others will leave his life some day and in some way. It's the kind of love that will never die.

excellent song, pesrsonally my favourite on urban hymns.

Just a quick note on that Stones thing, it wasn't the stones that sued them, it was some dodgy manager named Allan Klein who mamanged the stones in the sixties. He got them to sign some deal that gave him the rights to most of their songs they had at that time. The Stones still don't own the rights to Satisfaction.

I think this song is about someone who is at first unhappy or depressed but soon realises how lucky he is.

They're not facing poverty or hardship - they're lucky!

I agree with all your views to the band. The song though is entirely about this guy who says he's immune to heartbreak. He does not really love with his heart, instead he loves with his mind and he is comfortable with that and "feels no disgrace with who I am" (the truth---he does not really love, he pretends to). But still he has to remind himself over and over "that all the love I have is in my mind".
"I'm a lucky man--with fire in my hands" he'll never have a heartbreak therefore he is a lucky man, his love is not real. I believe is a song that entices self-thought questions like "do I want to be that 'lucky man/woman'?"
"I got a love that never dies" all in his mind, unlike the love in the heart that can die and can hurt...alot.
Love the song, yes Richard Ashcroft is a genius.

i'll admit im not too sure what its actually about, is it him coming to terms with himself, accepting who he is and loving what he is, not in an egotistical way. Is he lucky because he accepts who he is or is he lucky because, as Kuroshin says, he thinks he loves others but in actual fact he gives a fake love of sorts, the kind that both parties feel is real but is not, therefore he can never be hurt by heartbreak.

Well i dont really know but what i will say is that this song is simply awe inspiring...

I totally agree with AngelDust. The lyrics to this tune simply state that nothing is impossible to the human mind. You don`t need anybody but yourself to make you happy. However, this is a power that most people have no control over, and the singer expresses his joy to be one of the select few who truly know and enjoy themselves.

I agree with the theme that the lyrics are about generally finding that love within which at most times is very elusive. In the end if people in your circle either friends or family let you down you've got to find the power within to love yourself, cos in the end you come in on your own and out on your own.

This can be about just going through life and sometimes having to relearn something you thought you already knew, but eventually you know it for sure. At first your happiness comes and goes because it is so much affected by other people. But after awhile you learn that sometimes it's just going to be you on your own, and in order to be okay with that you have to be happy with yourself and being yourself. Hence the "Happiness, something in my own place... I feel no disgrace." It's a comforting song when you feel alone and it probably my favorite on Urban Hymns.
