    My Interpretation:The song appears to be about a couple who are not getting along too well a the moment. This may have happened due to one or both persons in the relationship changing; people are always changing and the person you may have started a relationship with may not the be the same person you end the relationship with. You begin to notice things about the person you've never picked up on before and you begin to lose interest and love each other a little less as time goes by (which is part of the reason why the woman Jay speaks of in the 2nd verse can't believe that their love diminished before they noticed its deterioration).

    This song particularly hits home for me since I've been through a similar situation. Both he and I changed and these changes didn't help with our relationship. We became less compatible. We both changed for the better and we both still have feelings for each other, but our love was no where near the capacity of what it used to be. To put in Jay's terms, our Love (with a large L) deflated to just love (with a little L), into a shadow of what it once was. And of course, Jay succinctly captures this unfortunate circumstance within his song.

    General Comment:To me the meaning of this song has always been clear, and I like to listen to it sometimes when I have a fight with my gf. I really love her but because of how she acts sometimes she really makes me love her with a little l. I can give so much more in life, it's just that she doesn't even know hot to get a piece of whats best in me and in the world...

    General Comment:i'm sorry, but i'll have to disagree with everybody's interpretation. I believe this song is not about love, but actually being out of love. "little L" is what is keeping these two people together. "L" is leaf or marijuana. but thats just me.
