Must have been late after noon.
I could tell by how far the child's shadow stretched out.
And he walked with a purpose in his sneakers down the street.
He had many questions like children often do.

He said, "Tell me all your thoughts on God.
And tell me, am I very far?"

Must have been late after noon.
On our way, the sun broke free of the clouds.
We count only blue cars skip the cracks in the street
And ask many questions like children often do.

We said, "Tell me all your thoughts on God,
'Cause I'd really like to meet her.
And ask her why we're who we are."

Tell me all your thoughts on God,
'Cause I'm on my way to see her.
So tell me, am I very far,
Am I very far now

It's getting cold, picked up the pace.
How our shoes make hard noises in this place.
Our clothes are stained, we pass the money, cross our people
And ask many questions like children often do.

We said, Tell me all your thoughts on God,
'Cause I'd really like to meet her.
And ask her why we're who we are.

Tell me all your thoughts on God,
'Cause I'm on my way to see her.
So tell me am I very far,
Am I very far now?

Tell me all your thoughts on God.
Tell me all your thoughts on God.

General Comment:I dont think he is referring to the "God" that made us when he mentioned "her". As there is an old saying that goes like this, “Mother is the word for God on the hearts and lips of all little children”. ― William Makepeace Thackeray

General Comment:I have heard way to much religious debate on this, and there is reason for this: there will never be a time when all religions agree on one point of view, now I personally don't know why the song calls god 'her' but really, who cares? I know god is a man for several reasons: he made man in his inmate and woman as a companion, he came to earth in the flesh as Jesus, his son who never lied, who said him and the father are one who also happens to be male. That's what I know to be true, but if someone else disagrees, who cares? As for the song, people a 're taking it to literally. literally obviously has a LOT of symbolism, so think about it. One phrase comes back in each verse: ask many questions, like children often do. It's really quite literal, no matter how old u get u still won't know what gods like until you die.

General Comment:ok all of that is well and good, maybe it's his mother, maybe it's god, or something else, but WHY in the fuck do they count only blue cars?

btw I had a cheesy reply to every time I heard this song on the radio, in my car. I said one. Cause my first car was blue. I still don't really understand this song at all. lol

General Comment:The song takes place in several different periods of a person’s life.. Where dawn is birth, the beginning, and night is the end.

In the first verse he talks about the midmorning and a child asking some of the first BIG questions. Is there a God.. and if so, what my relationship to him? He only has a couple broad questions at this point.

In the second verse we hear from the storyteller directly. From his perspective it’s late afternoon and his life is still carefree. He’s older but and still has the same questions but has fleshed them out. He’s formed an image of God. Here’s what he’d like to ask her.. He discovered and accepted his mortality and knows at the end of the road he’ll meet her.

In the third and last verse, it’s getting cold.. (sounds like I’m getting old..) .. Time’s flying faster.. life isn’t so carefree..It’s been a bit harsh.. He’s a bit worn.. but he still has the questions for God.. the eternal questions that we all ask and all look for answers to.. How did we get here? Where are we going? Why are we who we are..

General Comment:I think that both the speaker (not always the artist in lyrics) is also a child. "We pass many, cross eyed people And ask many questions Like children often do" and I think one boy is dying. Why else would someone be on their way to see God? I think its a child's view on death and dying and what happens next.

As far as referring to God as a she I think of "Mother is God in the eyes of a child." Idk if thats actually relevant or not...but thought I'd throw it out there

My Interpretation:I think people been taking them calling god a "her" to literally, I think that when they call god a her they are referencing to that children are naive, because children do not know much about the world or god. The band doesnt actually think thet god is a female
