And she takes another step
Slowly she opens the door
Check that he is sleeping
Pick up all the broken glass
And furniture on the floor
Been up half the night screaming
Now it's time to get away
Pack up the kids in the car
Another bruise to try and hide
Another alibi to write
Another lonely highway
In the black of night

Another ditch in the road
You keep moving
Another stop sign
You keep moving on
And the years go by so fast
Wonder how I ever made it through

And there are children to think of
Baby's asleep in the back seat
Wonder how they'll ever make it
Through this living nightmare
But the mind is an amazing thing
Full of candy dreams and new toys
And another cheap hotel
Two beds and a coffee machine
But there are groceries to buy
And she knows she'll have to go home

Another ditch in the road
You keep moving
Another stop sign
You keep moving on
And the years go by so fast
Wonder how I ever made it through

Another bruise to try and hide
You keep moving
Another stop sign
You keep moving on
And the years go by so fast
Silent fortress built to last
Wonder how I ever made it

General Comment:The meaning of this song is very obvious, as mentioned by many people. But what is very clever is the symbolism of the song, 'Two beds and a coffee machine' is referring to the hotel she has to stay at to avoid her abusive partner, but the sad part is that two beds and a coffee machine symbolizes love and two people living together, which is something she can't have.

General Comment:A sad, sad song. One of my favorite by them. Although I was more of a fan in the 90s XP.

I believe he must be writing from the POV of a friend of the girl. My dad has a lady friend whose husband is abusive. It really pains him that she can't just run away or ditch him, which makes more meaning for "wonder how I ever made it through". It's hardest to endure, but it's horrible to watch a person go through that.

General Comment:This is really stupid, but when i was younger and heard this song, i thought they said "another bruise to try and hide, another alligator eye"...lmao yes, yes thats what i thought it said. XD

I kept asking people if they knew what an alligator eye was ("is it another word for what u call it when you get a bruised eye or something...?")

but no, it actually says "Another bruise to try and hide, Another alibi to write"...which makes a lot more sense. :)

General Comment:This song is pretty self explanitory. The lyrics are so powerful.

Its about a woman in an abusive relationship looking back at the abuse she went through. The aftermath of a fight, making sure the husband is asleep before sneaking out with the kids to another hotel room.

Eventually she realizes she has to go back.
"But there are groceries to buy
And she knows she'll have to go home"
She cannot support herself and the children.

I think she gets out of the relationship and after all the years pass she is thinking about how she made it.

"Another bruise to try and hide
    Another alibi to write
Another lonely highway in the black of night
But there's hope in the darkness
You know you're going to make it"
I believe this is letting the listener know she got out of the relationship this time, and she made it.

General Comment:I agree about its a woman running from a violent man, but im confused about the lines:

"But there are groceries to buy
And she knows she'll have to go home"
    - how does that fit into the 'keep going' theme?

General Comment:this song describes what my life would have been like. which is why it always makes me cry, because it brings back a part of my life that I keep trying to forget about, but yet it's always there in the back of my mind. but they are also tears of joy because I got myself out of the situation.

"And the years go by so fast
Wonder how I ever made it through..."

That line right there hits me hard every time I hear it...because there are times when I really don't know how I could have made it through..but the important issue is that I did.

"But there's hope in the darkness
You know you're going to make it..."

General Comment:Before I started listening to music for real, I already loved this song.. I was maybe about eleven, and my cousin had sent it to me, and all my friends and I were like "sooo addicted" to this song..:D Too bad these guys broke up, they made beautiful music together though it's not the kind I enjoy the most listening to. For sure a meaningful song to many people!

General Comment:this song is about a woman who is running away from an abusive relationship with her husband. As she runs she takes her kids with her and starts living a life living off of cheap hotel rooms. hence the line "full of candy dreams, and new toys and another cheap hotel"

This song delivers the message to keep pushing and moving through life no matter what comes at you. "another ditch in the road, keep moving, another stop sign, keep moving on" such moving lyrics!!
