starters : gotterdam has the right idea
seconds : if U really really want to figure it out, LOOK at the lyrics printed in the book with the CD.....
THEY DO NOT SAY "HASST" IT SAYS "HAST" so in a purely literal translation FROM the book not the audible version it means HAVE.... ALSO look at what BestrafeMich has to say about scheide.... this a VERY valid point and I have seen many many translations but with hast=have and scheide=seperate it seems this is the most accurate LITERAL translation possible.... PS... Count the comments, tag for and against, and note how many germans support what I have just had to say..... RAMMSTEIN FOREVER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

i think it is pretty obvious that hate isnt litterally what he is saying. everyone knows that you hate spoken doesnt make sense and it is obviously "you have spoken". However as many of you have cleverly pointed out it is a double meaning. however, hate isnt intended to go directly into the lyrics. its just sopposed to make you realize that he hates her and hence NEIN!! I dont speak german but i am highly skilled in having some sense.

OK I know this is a little confusing for people that don't know german..trying to sort through what everyone is saying... but as a girl that has interviewed Rammstein personally, I think you can take my word for it.
They intend the main part of the song:
Du
Du hast
Du hast mich

to be a play on words. When listening to the song, this means "you hate me".
But when he adds the "gefragt" that means "you have asked me".

This song is about a man standing at the altar. The bride and the minister are asking him to say "I do" but he knows that his bride is unfaithful and he thinks she hates him. He does not agree to marry her. The part that goes:
Willst du bis der tod euch scheidet
Treu ihr sein für alle tage

is part of the German wedding vows. It is the equivelant to the American "till death do you part"

So there you have it, the actual meaning of "Du Hast"

this song is about how in this modern era the meaning & marriage & commitment has been robbed of its integrity as people cheat & deceive one another;

"Willst du bis der tod euch scheidet
Treu ihr sein für alle tage

NEIN!!!!"

wedding vows are recited & instead of saying "i do" tull yells "NO!!"; marriage has become such a fluid word these days that the vows are pointless, they are always broken...

It freakin' means "You hate". For one, it's in the booklet that comes with the CD. Secondly, the music video even show a clear meaning it shows "You hate". I have burning friends in barns? HELL NO. Obviously he "hates" someone, otherwise he wouldn't have lit the guy on fire or have blown up the car.

The music video is disturbing. The song is great.

And my, I'm getting nauseated from the "Du Hast" discussion and some people's feeling of supremacy.

Sorry to everyone who thinkgs this is about hate

Du hast - You have
Du hast mich gefragt - You have asked me
Du hast mich gefragt, und ich hab nicht gesacht - You asked me and i didnt answer

The 2 chorus are just wedding vows in german..at the start he doesnt respond, at the end he responds with a powerful NEIN! As in..will you stay with her forever blah blah..NO. Any american who translated this to be you hate me needs to learn your german verbs.

Rammstein likes to have double meanings, Till is a poet, and poets like for people to interpret their art in many colourful ways to truly take in the full potential of the masterpiece. You can view it as Du Hast or Du Haßt, whichever you choose, and thats the beauty of Rammstein, their songs are something to think about, so just pick whatever fits for you.

I'm pretty sure these guys are homosexuals.
To be so "dark and kill kill blah blah" is utter bullshit.
The kids who shot up Columbine listened to this and "did it because of this music"...really?
It's fucking ridick.

Come up with some better lyrics please.

....the music behind it is good though...the lyrics are just dumb as shit.

*Sigh* This is probably one of the most annoying debates that ever arises among common friends of Rammstein.

First things first, the verb haben = to have, while hassen = to hate. This is not negotiable!

The verb hassen will always use the essett symbol for the "ss" and so it's not all that hard to distinguish between the second person singular form of either verb unless hearing it (hast oder hasst).

As for the meaning of the song, its not quite clear whether or not it is meant "you have" or "you hate" in the beginning until the part "Du hast mich gefragt" comes along. In the perfect present tense of a German verb, the only verbs that can be used for the normal word order are sein and haben, leaving the intended verb of the sentence in the perfect present tense at the end of the sentence.

"Du hast mich gefragt, und ich hab nichts gesagt" = You asked me (or You had asked me) and I had nothing to say.

If you want a shitty Google-esque literal translation.. which some people like.. It would read:
"You have me asked, and I have nothing said"

Besides all of that, the use of "hast" and "hasst" is used like how in English "you're" and "your" sound exactly the same, but imply different uses. The same also occurs in German...

Now anyway, please, if you do not speak or know German at all, do not tell or give advice to people about German. It's not bad having people speak it but when they give false information, like I saw an earlier post of someone saying hasse was the singular second person of haben (du hasse)...not only would it be conjugated wrong but its not even using the correct letters lol. It seriously makes me cringe.

Anyway, just enjoy the music. Having people try to justify the meaning of a song through the use of a translation to a language that they don't even know is seriously one of the most frustrating things to witness.
