Not only in this example do the translators confuse hassen and haben, but they also neglect that the phrase itself is spoken in the perfect present tense, whereas the English translation is in the... present tense? Wtf?
1) If they really wanted to say hate, regardless of how grammatically incorrect it is as written in the phrase, they would say Du hasst mich gefragt, although this violates so many German grammer rules it should be outlawed.
2) Since this phrase is in the perfect present tense, only sein or haben can be in place of where the verb would normally be in a present tense or simple past tense sentence. Seeing as the verb fragen doesn't imply change or motion, ONLY haben can be used. As conjugated by the subject "du", the correct phrase would be Du hast mich gefragt, meaning "you have asked me" or "you asked me."
3) In order to get such a horribly twisted translation, they would have had to:
confuse hast for hasst without rewriting it (yes, it does matter even if you can't hear the difference)
neglect how the phrase is in the perfect present tense in German but put it in the present tense in English
confuse fragen ("to ask") with sagen ("to say"). Don't ask me how.. lol
Neglect the fact that gefragt, or even gesagt (the correct verb), are perfect present tense conjugations but translated in English are left in the infinitive form... God, why?
Looking at this English translation, it seems like they literally translated it (even incorrectly lol) without regarding German word order. Du hast much gefragt =/= you have me to say.
In order to even get that phrase, it would have to be "Du hasst mich zu sagen" (You hate me to say). I won't even get into how they got "and I will not obey" from "und ich hab nichts gesagt" since the future tense verb werden isn't even present in that phrase, not to mention "nichts gesagt" wouldn't even come close to translating to "not obey", even in an idiomatic or colloquial use.
Although these songs were rewritten to flow better for English listening audiences, the fact that they are called translations and that people think this version of the song is more correct than in its Muttersprache are just wrong.

First things first, the verb haben = to have, while hassen = to hate. This is not negotiable!
The verb hassen will always use the essett symbol for the "ss" and so it's not all that hard to distinguish between the second person singular form of either verb unless hearing it (hast oder hasst).
As for the meaning of the song, its not quite clear whether or not it is meant "you have" or "you hate" in the beginning until the part "Du hast mich gefragt" comes along. In the perfect present tense of a German verb, the only verbs that can be used for the normal word order are sein and haben, leaving the intended verb of the sentence in the perfect present tense at the end of the sentence.
"Du hast mich gefragt, und ich hab nichts gesagt" = You asked me (or You had asked me) and I had nothing to say.
If you want a shitty Google-esque literal translation.. which some people like.. It would read:
"You have me asked, and I have nothing said"
Besides all of that, the use of "hast" and "hasst" is used like how in English "you're" and "your" sound exactly the same, but imply different uses. The same also occurs in German...
Now anyway, please, if you do not speak or know German at all, do not tell or give advice to people about German. It's not bad having people speak it but when they give false information, like I saw an earlier post of someone saying hasse was the singular second person of haben (du hasse)...not only would it be conjugated wrong but its not even using the correct letters lol. It seriously makes me cringe.
Anyway, just enjoy the music. Having people try to justify the meaning of a song through the use of a translation to a language that they don't even know is seriously one of the most frustrating things to witness.

The 2 chorus are just wedding vows in german..at the start he doesnt respond, at the end he responds with a powerful NEIN! As in..will you stay with her forever blah blah..NO. Any american who translated this to be you hate me needs to learn your german verbs.

They intend the main part of the song:

to be a play on words. When listening to the song, this means "you hate me".
But when he adds the "gefragt" that means "you have asked me".
This song is about a man standing at the altar. The bride and the minister are asking him to say "I do" but he knows that his bride is unfaithful and he thinks she hates him. He does not agree to marry her. The part that goes:
Willst du bis der tod euch scheidet
Treu ihr sein für alle tage
is part of the German wedding vows. It is the equivelant to the American "till death do you part"
So there you have it, the actual meaning of "Du Hast"

seconds : if U really really want to figure it out, LOOK at the lyrics printed in the book with the CD.....
THEY DO NOT SAY "HASST" IT SAYS "HAST" so in a purely literal translation FROM the book not the audible version it means HAVE.... ALSO look at what BestrafeMich has to say about scheide.... this a VERY valid point and I have seen many many translations but with hast=have and scheide=seperate it seems this is the most accurate LITERAL translation possible.... PS... Count the comments, tag for and against, and note how many germans support what I have just had to say..... RAMMSTEIN FOREVER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
