Lyrics for Engel as interpreted by gasmask

Engel Lyrics

Definitely one of the most underrated Rammstein songs ever. Whenever anybody mentions Rammstein, people will immediately think of Du Hast, which is good in its own right, but Engel is just 100 times better - the guitar, the whistling, the lyrics: one of my all-time favorite Rammstein songs...

Rammstein is just great period...I haven't heard a song yet I haven't liked. And Till Linderman definitely has an amazing growl. ^.~

Though this was apparently enspired by the Terentino film "From Dusk till Dawn", I think the similarity ends there. It seems it ended up more so as a negative commentary on the Christian concept of becoming angels in the afterlife after good deeds in this one. The lyrics explain the rest, so...

Well, murley_mirtle, as an American, I have no clue what you're talking about. Maybe I missed when this was originally released, but who exactly was shocked by this song? I don't even think it was played for many people to hear, unless you went and bought the cd. That is, it wasn't on the radio, so who was "shocked?"

Personally, I love this song, it's definitely one of Rammstein's deeper and more profound songs. I really don't like their English version of it, as I think it lost some of the more moving parts in the translation for rhyme's sake. Oh well, the German version is outstanding.

I'm American. This is my favorite Rammstein song. Du Hast may sound nice, but I started Rammstein with this song anyway. Underrated indeed. Murley_Mirtle, I also have no effin idea what you're talking about. Not all Americans fall in one category, I guess you forget about the multicultural part. The only people among us I can see getting shocked by this are some of the religious ones, so whatever.

Yeah, you can shock Americans with practically anything. When the original cover of Herzeleid (Rammstein's first album for the culture-barbarians who don't know) came out they had to change it immediately, because everyone went like "ZOMG those are half-naked Germans on the cover, they must be NAZIS lolololol!!!!111oneone"
Please....

As for the song itself, I think it's a really original take on being an angel.

here one quick translation i did wihtin few minutes (feel free to improve or post as english version):

Who does fine while being alive
will be one angel after death
looking at the sky you'll ask yourself
why you cant see those

Not until the clouds fall asleep
you can see us in the sky
we are afraid and feel alone

God knows, that i don't want to be an angel

They lived behind the sunshine
detached and infinite far away from us
they have to cling to the stars (very tight)
in order to not fall down

Not until the clouds fall asleep
you can see us in the sky
we are afraid and live alone

God knows, that i don't want to be an angel

Not until the clouds fall asleep
you can see us in the sky
we are afraid and live alone

God knows, that i don't want to be an angel

Mue91's translation is very good. For my $.02 I use a bit different because it is more melodic and works more comforably for me in engilish (though I actually feel pretty comforable keeping most of the german syntaxt intact and letting it sound yodaish) while sill preserving the german meaning. I think the original German lyrics are more about conformity and what people give up to try to be part of a group, whether it is christian or the in crowd. The english lyrics are extremely different. It isn't even the same song.

A few notes. Angst means fear but also specifically is used in existentialism to mean fear of failing in one's duty to god. So it is notable that angst is attributed to angels and I doubt that was a coincidence.

Those who live well on earth
Will be angels after death
They live in heaven so you ask then
Why it is you can't see them

But when the clouds have gone to sleep
Angels can be in heaven seen
They are full of fear and so alone
God he knows I will no angel be

They live behind the sunshine
Separated from us by a gulf so wide
They must hand on to the stars so tight
Ore else they'll fall from heaven's height

But when the clouds have gone to sleep
Angels can be in heaven seen
They are full of fear and so alone
God he knows I will no angel be

I agree with you that said this is one of their better songs. I'm not exactly sure what this song means, but then again, Rammstein said that they want their fans to take the song as meaning what they[the fans] think it means. To one person it can mean one thing, to another, another.

I like this song particularly because it can be meant to defy Christianity, in a way. I don't believe in the Christian religion fully. As in, the Bible. It's been paraphrased and translated so many times that I don't believe most of it's true. And plus, the dark ages... Oh well, enough of my beliefs.

I really love how even the English versions of their songs don't lose their meanings(though, again, with the many meanings). Most English versions of European songs are crappy love songs.

Hak, I just imagined Till singing a crappy English love song in, like, Du Hast format.
Think about it.

I love how Rammstein shows the more poetic side of modern music, really gives you hope that not all of us are going to hell. To bad I'm not one of them, but oh well, I don't really want to be an angel anyway.
