Jesus, don't want me for a sunbeam
Sunbeams are never made like me

Don't expect me to cry,
For all the reasons you had to die
Don't ever ask your love of me

Don't expect me to cry
Don't expect me to lie
Don't expect me to die for me

Jesus, don't want me for a sunbeam
Sunbeams are never made like me

Don't expect me to cry,
For all the reasons you had to die
Don't ever ask your love of me

Don't expect me to cry
Don't expect me to lie
Don't expect me to die for me

Don't expect me to cry
Don't expect me to lie
Don't expect me to die for me

Jesus, don't want me for a sunbeam
Sunbeams are never made like me
Don't expect me to cry,
For all the reasons you had to die
Don't ever ask your love of me

Don't expect me to cry
Don't expect me to lie
Don't expect me to die
Don't expect me to cry
Don't expect me to lie
Don't expect me to die for me

My Interpretation:This song is a parody of the song, "Jesus Wants Me for a Sunbeam". In this song it talks about a sunbeam is a person that is happy, loving, serves Jesus, keeps his heart from sin, and etc. The Vaseline's song "Jesus Don't Want Me for a Sunbeam" talks about how he doesn't have it in himself to be a sunbeam because "sunbeams are never made like me". This song explains that he cannot be a cry, lie, or die for Jesus.

General Comment:Ok for my two cents worth here it goes.
Kurt hated religion, and so this song is sorta sarcastically telling off christians. See they think this song is about jesus and all, but it's really not.
    "Don't expect me to cry,
For all the reasons you had to die
Don't ever ask your love of me" like DUH read the lyrics. Also this song is a cover so obviously Kurt, and the rest of the band for that matter picked it to play because they liked the music.

General Comment:Ok. This song is not for nor against Jesus. Songs are meant to be taken differently but to me it is sincrity, not hatered. It takes intellegence to tell the difference. So stop hating on each other, christians, athesists or what ever the hell you are. Just shut up and enjoy the music.

General Comment:Kurt Cobain is not singing about "all of the horrible sins he's committed," or anything, even. The song, first of all, is a cover of a Vaseline's song, which is a parody of a kid's song. And even if he did write it, Kurt Cobain has said so many times before, THE SHIT HE WRITES MEANS NOTHING. They're just words for the music. If you wanna talk esoteric Christianity, before the Bible was horrendously edited and made about as reliable as a Brothers Grimm Fairy Tale book, when the male and the female were equal, let's talk some truth, otherwise your words, too, mean nothing. And if any of you Bible thumpers knew anything about this band or this music you would know that Kurt Cobain authored the phrase, "GOD IS GAY." and he was most likely attracted to the song because of it's anti-religious connotations, not because of any guilt or remorse he felt he owed to some Evangelical god he didn't even feel in existence. Preaching to the wrong choir, chums, if you think a forum full of Nirvana fans is a good place to try and convert some folks.

My Opinion:I feel that this song represents someone that feels they had done something so terrible that the person feels they are no longer worthy of god's love. And in this the author says im such a terrible person Im not gonna ask for forgivness. The author feels damned on earth already and thus decides the only thing he can do is exist and stay out of religion. excommunication of self in fact could be the appology to god by saying im willing to take the reprocussions of denying you and being damned as a self punishment for his wrong doing and hoping that being humble is what may make him worthy in the end

General Comment:Jesus would never want to be martyred, killed, and he would not want others to be martyred, killed, in His name, obviously. Kurt is just getting the idea across taht martyring is for evil people living on earsth, or just stupid misinformed people living on earth or else religious zealots living on earth, but it's not for him.

Kurt did not martyr himself, however much his deaht may avenge, but he was escaping a hell he hated and if it happens to come off as a martyrs might, who the fuck cares.
