Lyrics for Lake of Fire as interpreted by bonj

Lake of Fire Lyrics
Where do bad folks go when they die?
They don't go to heaven where the angels fly
They go to the lake of fire and fry
Won't see them again 'till the fourth of July

I knew a lady who came from Duluth
Bit by a dog with a rabid tooth
She went to her grave just a little too soon
And flew away howling on the yellow moon

Where do bad folks go when they die?
They don't go to heaven where the angels fly
They go to the lake of fire and fry
Won't see them again 'till the fourth of July

People cry and people moan
They look for a dry place to call their home
Try to find some place to rest their bones
While the angels and the devils try to make them their own

Where do bad folks go when they die?
They don't go to heaven where the angels fly
They go to the lake of fire and fry
Won't see them again 'till the fourth of July

This is the way I hear it.

A guy who often wonders where is he going to go when he dies. He knows there are 2 places, and he often wonders what each place is like. "wont see them again 'till the forth of july" A Idea that maybe the fire in the fireworks is the closest guess on what hell is like.
"people cry people moan , look for a dry place to call their home" --Maybe an Idea that sometimes people spend too much of their time wondering where they are going to go , and how they will buried.
"I knew a lady who cam from duluth- section"-- Maybe that is saying that you just might die early, and you might have wasted all your time wondering where your going when you die.. When it is already chosen where your going.

hey rob,
i think your interpretation is pretty much what i think about that song.
But i think the 'forth of july' section must have some different meaning...

don't know why but 4th of july is often associated to the end of the world. i think that's what it means in this song

This song symbolizes the unsurety of life, it doesn't matter where you go when you die, it's not your choice and it doesn't matter anyways.

Yes, this was a cover song by the Meat Puppets. Nirvana invited the Meat Puppets to come onto their MTV Unplugged special because Kurt was a big fan of them. And, they played some of the Meat Puppet songs. This is a really good song, I listen to it a lot

This is a cover of the Meatpuppets, perfromed with the Meatpuppets at Unplugged in New York. It's about going to hell and angels and demons fighting for their soul.

The song is basically about the afterlife. The only part I really don't understand is the line about the fourth of July. A great song, btw.

Might be a reference to some cartoons, mainly the older Luney Tunes, where a character gets sent into the sky strapped to a rocket loaded with dynamite, and when he explodes it looks like fireworks.

Just a thought.

This is my favorite Nirvana song. I love how he sings it...its haunting...isn't this on Unplugged? That's almost a haunting performance...I can't watch that without being in a sorta tranze...My older bro "raised" me on Nirvana, but I never got a personal interest in them until a couple years ago, but they've always been the top band on my list. Awsome song.

this was on MTV unplugged, which was a great show, they took it off about when MTV started going bad, but anyways, the unplugged album is one if my favorite nirvana albums, cuz they prove that they can play music other than their seattle grunge and still sound very good.

The 4th july line was only used because it rhyme with fry.

Bands do that. Not every line has to make sense

the fourth of july is independance day.... maybe the fourth of july is referring to the people that created your country america..... (the founding fathers) wont see em again till the fourth of july..... perhaps in the eyes of the meat puppets the founding fathers went to hell

this meat puppets cover doesnt need much explaining. its about what this guy believes is hell, the lake of fire. personally, i dont think that the 4th of july has any specific meaning in this song... maybe they just put it because july rhymes with die, fly and fry. if it DID have a meaning, maybe its that america is evil or that as schr4nz says the founding fathers went to hell. cool song.

Ok heres my interpretation, Nirvana was a Christian at some point in his life so some of the Christian views of "heaven and hell" are exhibited in this song. However for one reason or another he decided Christianity was not for him. People cry and people moan

"They look for a dry place to call their home
Try to find some place to rest their bones
While the angels and the devils try to make them their own "

It appears he believes that human beings are always wandering, only wishing for a happy life or a place to call their "home". Christianity involves two choices - heaven or hell- your either with the devil or with God. He seems to indicate that both God and the Devil are trying to make human beings "their own".

Where do bad folks go when they die?
They don't go to heaven where the angels fly
They go to the lake of fire and fry
Won't see them again 'till the fourth of July

Here he seems to indicate the destiny of "bad" people (according to the Bible) the lake of fire. The fourth of july in my opinion could mean death, or the light of the fireworks illuminates the sky enough to see hell. THIS IS JUST MY OPINION!!
