They're "twice in every way, they lead a life you could forget.." so they live together, but lead different lives.
And still, they're aware of their bumpy marriage, and probably even wonder about straying from each other, and being unfaithful with the temptation (competition) they see around them, but they never go along with it. ("They took the time to reflect, even as the competition is breathing every day.")
To me, the wife probably wants to mend things ("calls him everyday"), but the husband is cold, rude and crappy at communication. So she tries to go with his flow and give out the same attitude, even though it breaks her heart ("Don't try, you'll never win. And you could never be him.")

I believe that song is about finding that one person that you were made for. And I about getting scared of monogamy so they separate and no how matter how many people they date or how much they think they were write, they are supposed to be together.

this is a tough one to get a meaning for. i guess its sort of about two people who didnt work and wont feel better alone, they need to find new people. he's kinda saying "stop trying, be happy for her and move on...she's happier with him and youd be happier with someone else". a good but hard lesson to follow.
the calls him everyday thing is jsut there to mess things up and complicate them...she doesnt want to be with him, but she needs to have him in her life. makes it more tough on him - trying to get over her. i had a situation like this once....
