Lyrics for Breadfan as interpreted by elmoz

Breadfan Lyrics
GARAGE INC. (1998)

(Bourge, Shelley, Phillips)
Originally recorded by Budgie in 1973

Breadfan
Open up your mind
Open up your purse
Open up your bones
Never, never gonna loose it

Breadfan
Take it all away
Never give an inch
Gotta make a mint
Gotta make a million

Breadfan
You got it wrong
Some long time friend
Gonna loose it
In the end who's a fool

Seagull
Give it all away
Stay a bird
Stay a man
Stay a ghost
Stay what you want to be

Loser
Give it all away
Never stay with the winner
With the man
With all the filthy money

Come on
Keep it on the side
With a ride
On a record on the top
If you're gonna be a bad boy

Breadfan
You got it wrong
Some long time friend
Gonna loose it
In the end who's a fool

Seagull
Give it all away
Stay a bird
Stay a man
Stay a ghost
Stay what you want to be

yeah!

Breadfan
Open up your mind
Open up your purse
Open up your bones
Never, never gonna loose it

Breadfan
Take it all away
Never give an inch
Gotta make a mint
Gotta make a million

Breadfan
You got it wrong
Some long time friend
Gonna loose it
In the end who's a fool

Seagull
Give it all away
Stay a bird
Stay a man
Stay a ghost
Stay what you want to be

i think this is something to do with drugs, maybe the word 'breadfan' was another word for a particular type of drug.

Clearly this is about a greedy dude, someone obsessed with money. 'Bread' is slang for money. There are references to 'flithy money', 'gotta make a million', etc.

Its kinda ironic that Metallica would cover this song since they are on of the richest bands in the world, and have a problem with . I just saw the movie 'Some Kind of Monster', and Lars was selling some of his art collection. Pieces were selling for a few million here and there.

And he has a problem with people downloading a few free songs...

vilenin, come on, they don't care about the moey, they just don't want their music going to people who won't appreciate it. if you aren't willing to get the cd, and you download it, you don't really care. actually, now i'm a hipocrite cuz i have 4 of their cd's burned and only 2 that i bought. oh well haha. I DO appreciate Metallica. best band ever

So Metallica can't sing about greed because they're rich? Fuck your stupid Metallica deserves everything they have unlike most of the rich people in the world. They earned their money with insane talent and hard work. Fuck all you Metallica haters, you're just posers who don't know shit.

Rather strange lyrics, as you would expect with any other song made originally by Budgie. The original isn't quite as heavy, but it is a great showcase for Budgie's axeman Tony Bourge's skills.

Glad to see you know of Budgie, Dreamer Deceiver. You know, I guess I am kind of glad they covered this song, or even less people would know of Budgie.

I love how every song off of Garage has at least one person screaming "they covered it! It's not even theirs!" No shit people, that's the idea.

The song's about a really greedy guy, as vilenin said. He loses everything in his life except his cash, but he still seeks only money.

Anyway, find Around the World by Red Hot Chili Peppers and listen to the intro. Sound familiar?

I read in the So What magazine Whiplash Section (Fans ask and Metallica Answers) Ill try to quote it as best as i can do
Question: What the fuck does Mommy Wheres Fluffy at the end of Breadfan mean
And Jason replied
JN: Fluffy is a toenail-less rodent covered in poo.
LOL, if u dont believe buy the book and read the whiplash sections.

This is one of the sickest metallica songs ever! It has been around a long time. Way before the release of Garage Inc. Being a long time Metallica listener, I believe that this song was written with Dave Mustaine in mind. Mustaine was booted from Metallica, he went on to form the band Megadeath. That is most likley where the BOYZ came up with the lyrics to Breadfan!

has anyone else noticed that the musical composition of master of puppets is very similar to that of this song. opening with a rapid guitar riff with bass and drums added after a couple of bars, then with an amazing slow section in the middle with an amazing slow solo, and both finishing heavy. prehaps this is the key to awesome songs such as these.

and shadydayz, there's a zillion comments above you about it being a cover.

Time to chime in me thinks..
To the dude that stated that Metallica are hippocrits for releasing a song about "Greed" when they them selves are NOW rich is short sited!! The song was produced by Metallica Loooooong before they where rich!! At this time very few people still never knew who Metallica even fucking where!, It wasnt till the Justice Album that Metallica made there name common... Prier to that, It was us young bangers in the back rooms slammin out Ride the Lightning or Kill em all!!!!

And The intire "Garage" CD release was a spin-off of the Original LP way back in the 80s (Garage Days Revisited) ...The name revisited was a slant on RE-used, or RE-written... The original concept LP was totaly filled with copied artists previous Work. James him self states this some where.... I'd be fucked if I recall where.

Long live Metal

Oh... I almost forgot..
The idea of the band (Metallica) Producing the Covers was to pay Homage to the Orginal Bands! It was there way to say

"Thanks Guys, Because it was you guys that made us this fucking crazy, And to be influenced to write(later on) our own material"

IT WAS NOT or ever was, to Rip them off! or to make a fast buck!

It's funny to read these comments who think this song was first released on Garage Inc. This song was actually the B side to the "Eye of the Beholder" single from the Justice album. I think 88 or 89. I know this because I bought it. Mullet and all...

Still a great song after all these years. Its definitely about someone who is greedy. The reference to "seagul" may be about the bird. What do they do? They sit around waiting for something to turn up. Scavange or steal their food.
