So this has been.my favorite song of OTEP's since it came out in 2004, and I always thought it was a song about a child's narrative of suffering in an abusive Christian home. But now that I am revisiting the lyrics, I am seeing something totally new.
This song could be gospel of John but from the perspective of Jesus.
Jesus was NOT having a good time up to and during the crucifixion. Everyone in the known world at the time looked to him with fear, admiration or disgust and he was constantly being asked questions. He spoke in "verses, prophesies and curses". He had made an enemy of the state, and believed the world was increasingly wicked and fallen from grace, or that he was in the "mouth of madness".
The spine of atlas is the structure that allows the titan to hold the world up. Jesus challenged the state and in doing so became a celebrated resistance figure. It also made him public enemy #1.
All of this happened simply because he was doing his thing, not because of any agenda he had or strategy.
And then he gets scourged (storm of thorns)
There are some plot holes here but I think it's an interesting interpretation.
High, higher than the sun
You shoot me from a gun
I need you to elevate me here
At the corner of your lips
As the orbit of your hips
Eclipse, you elevate my soul
I've lost all self-control
Been living like a mole
Now going down, excavation
I and I in the sky
You make me feel like I can fly
So high, elevation
A star lit up like a cigar
Strung out like a guitar
Maybe you could educate my mind
Explain all these controls
I can't sing but I've got soul
The goal is elevation
A mole, digging in a hole
Digging up my soul, now
Going down, excavation
I and I in the sky
You make me feel like I can fly
So high, elevation
Love
Lift me up out of these blues
Won't you tell me something true?
I believe in you
A mole, digging in a hole
Digging up my soul now
Going down, excavation
I and I in the sky
You make me feel like I can fly
So high, elevation
Elevation
Elevation
Elevation
Elevation
You shoot me from a gun
I need you to elevate me here
At the corner of your lips
As the orbit of your hips
Eclipse, you elevate my soul
I've lost all self-control
Been living like a mole
Now going down, excavation
I and I in the sky
You make me feel like I can fly
So high, elevation
A star lit up like a cigar
Strung out like a guitar

So high, elevation
Elevation
Elevation
Elevation

They do Soundtrack songs so well, this off Tomb Raider and Hold Me off the Batman Forever Sdtk.
Vertigo is another great rocker – devoid of political meaning and full of fun
I don’t like it when they go on a political whinge as they do – but having said that, they’ve lasted the distance as one of the all time greatest bands who are still going, so, quite frankly, they can say whatever they want!
But I do love it when they bring it back to simple RNR like this mega top notch rocker – and that is probably the best chorus I’ve heard come out of Bono’s mouth – It’s so bloody simple, anthemic and sounds like a locomotive train in full speed – C’mon, everybody sing – “Woo Hoo!”
