Lyrics for New Year's Day as interpreted by archmastermind

New Year's Day Lyrics
Yeah

All is quiet on New Year's day
A world in white gets underway
I want to be with you, be with you, night and day
Nothing changes on New Year's day
On New Year's day

I will be with you again
I will be with you again

Under a blood red sky
A crowd has gathered, black and white
Arms entwined, the chosen few
The newspapers says, says
Say it's true, it's true
And we can break through
Though torn in two
We can be one

I, I will begin again
I, I will begin again

Yeah, ohhh

Ah-ah, ah-ah, ah-ah
Ah-ah, ah-ah, ah-ah

Ah, maybe the time is right
Oh, maybe tonight

I will be with you again
I will be with you again

And so we're told this is the golden age
And gold is the reason for the wars we wage
Though I want to be with you
Be with you night and day
Nothing changes on New Year's day
On New Year's day
On New Year's day

oh man, i love sm staff for putting this up.
the first verse to me sounds like a love song, but then the second and third verses support the civil war thing. to me it sound like a civil rights kind of thing "under a blood red sky, a crowd has gathered black and white." but am i just going for the obvious.

This song is the ultimate revolutionary love war chant. It says, in a world gone mad, we can stand for sanity by finding each other. It's incredible stuff.

No matter what the lyrics say, it all sounds like a poem to a far-away lover to me. It's the ponderings of a person outraged by the senseless violence of the world around him, and his belief, despite it all, that his love for another (if requited) will conquer the war he sees in himself. There's a distance between the author and his lover, and what makes the song exciting is that the author believes he may bridge that gap "tonight." It's such a song of personal empowerment, when you think about it.

U2takemehigher - those lines fit in with what i have read about this song, and that is that it is about end times - Under a blood red sky - refers to the 'moon to blood' prophercy from Joel. 'A crowd has gather black and white' is in reference to the great ingathering from every tribe nation etc. The 'golden age' is also a reference along thise lines if anyone cares enough to ask me i will find out some more on it. This makes sense as well as it was this period that U2 were their most relegious.

Back when this song was new, I felt it was the band's reaction to the sectarian violence in Ulster. I now realise the depth of my delusion; it's something much wider in scope.

In a general way, this song is written about the civil and social problems in Poland at the time. Coincidently, Poland did away with marshal law that year, On New Year's Day 1984. U2 1, POLAND O. ;)

My favorite U2 song. Its from the album War. The Edge plays piano in the song, not a sappy piano part, but more the backbone of the song. Unforgetable song.

All in all, it's a love song. It has haunting piano and a cool bass line. It reminds of calm in the middle of a storm.

i don't know if this is the BEST rock song ever, but i do think it's a good one. as for the first comment, i really see what you mean. but i also think it could mean that even though we make a lot of promises to change things with every passing year, we never do. people get all hyped up, saying things will be different, but we still make the same mistakes, fight kill and hate, and that nothing ever changes.

So many different reasons for this song.

This is a great song-in my opinion, THE best rock song of all time. I'm surprised only one person before me commented on it.

To me, this song is about on New Year's Day when everyone plans on changing, or making a new years resolution .. and Bono is saying that 'nothing changes on New Year's Day' that with all the changes he will make, he still wants to be with the one he loves ... like, nothing will change that ... get it? well that's what I think.
