Lyrics for New Year's Day as interpreted by archmastermind

New Year's Day Lyrics
Yeah

All is quiet on New Year's day
A world in white gets underway
I want to be with you, be with you, night and day
Nothing changes on New Year's day
On New Year's day

I will be with you again
I will be with you again

Under a blood red sky
A crowd has gathered, black and white
Arms entwined, the chosen few
The newspapers says, says
Say it's true, it's true
And we can break through
Though torn in two
We can be one

I, I will begin again
I, I will begin again

Yeah, ohhh

Ah-ah, ah-ah, ah-ah
Ah-ah, ah-ah, ah-ah

Ah, maybe the time is right
Oh, maybe tonight

I will be with you again
I will be with you again

And so we're told this is the golden age
And gold is the reason for the wars we wage
Though I want to be with you
Be with you night and day
Nothing changes on New Year's day
On New Year's day
On New Year's day

No No No my sheeps this song is singed by Bono by the glory of God.
This is it!! this is it!! my brothers he is talking about a new beginning of life the second comming of Jesus and Jesus as God wants to become one with you.
You have the truth in you search for it, you can feel this song is more than just any song.
Just like Vertigo and others.

This song is really touching to me. I think it's about someone who cared about this person and then he found her years later to only let her know how much he loved her so much!

To me this song is a letter that a soldier writes to his beloved on the day that the war he in is ending.

"All is quiet on New Year's day
A world in white gets underway
I want to be with you, be with you, night and day
Nothing changes on New Year's day
On New Year's day" - Tt does not necessarily have to be January 1, it could mean New Year's Day as in a time to start over, the war is over and it is time to start a new "year" or chapter in his life. Even in all this excitement he still craves to be with her.

"I will be with you again
I will be with you again" - This sounds to me like a jubilant murmured realization, that he really will be with her again, that he made it through, he can't really believe it yet.

"Under a blood red sky
A crowd has gathered, black and white
Arms entwined, the chosen few
The newspapers says, says
Say it's true, it's true
And we can break through
Though torn in two
We can be one" - Under the war-torn sky, a group of officers and officials of all different races have gathered together and put aside their differences. They are the chosen few to go through with the negotiations. The newspapers confirm all the rumors that the war has ended. He is jubilant about it.

"I, I will begin again
I, I will begin again" - He will start his life anew after the horrors that he has witnessed.

"And so we're told this is the golden age
And gold is the reason for the wars we wage
Though I want to be with you
Be with you night and day
Nothing changes on New Year's day
On New Year's day
On New Year's day" - We're told that this is the golden age of society but he is wondering if that is true then why are all these wars being wages, for money and gold. He then repeats his affirmation that even though he is witnessing history in the making, he still wants to be with her.

At concerts Bono wraps himself in a plain white flag during this song... kinda a statement about no nationalism I think. And that ties in to the 'End Times' idea, in the new Kingdom under Jesus there would be no nationality as we know it today, no inter-country war

Watch the movie "Cry Freedom" about Stephen Biko's murder and Donald Woods' subsequent escape from South Africa on New Year's Day. That's the only thing this song is about. It's basically an anti-apartheid song.

possibly about having one day of peace in Ireland? Just a wild guess cause there's one line that goes "and we can be one/ though torn in two.."
it just made me think about how no one does anything on new years day (aside from taking care of mad hangovers) ..

Just reminds me of past relationships, that's all. Maybe a little sadness, or regret mixed in, but in the end, a tiny glimmer of hope as we can all 'begin again', right where we left off. ;)

wow .. 2001 .. really?! i first heard this song - by chance - on the radio THIS SUMMER :x. but i love it :) such a great song with a lot of translations . . i like the simple one of making resolutions on new year's and all of it being talk and "nothing changing", but the religious theme is geinous.

a person longing for a loved one of course...OR the MAN's return:
"under a blood red sky" see Revelations 6.
"a crowd is gathered black and white...the chosen few" see Rev. 14
"I, I will begin again" see Rev. 21
"oh, maybe tonight" see Matt. 24
"I will be with you again" see John 14

continuing on... 'arms entwined the chosen few' possibly means that everyone that is chosen by God will be one with him. also 'gold is the reason for the wars we wage' gold may be a metaphor for God, most wars are over religion. 'i will begin again' begin in the new age?

i agree with the earlier comment that it could be about end times but also with the belief of the transition into the new age and becoming one with God. maybe 'new years day' is the begining of the new age, 'a world in white gets under way', white symbolises purity which is how a world with God would be. 'i will be with you again' being with God? new age = 'golden age'?

Me, George & Pete - walking home one New year's day - through Cwmdonkin Park - singing loudly - being answered by poeple in houses, abusing us for being loud, then - realising it was us - joining in!
Pete died almost 20 years ago, George & I have forgotten about each other - but neither of us do not think of Pete at least daily.
Such is life, such are memories

CroneCircus, your explanation sounds interesting. You make it sound like you know it all, and everyone else are just ninnies. At the risk of accusing you of being a pedagogue, can you please post a source for the info? Or, are you a member of the band and hence have first hand knowledge? I ask this because wikipedia.org contradicts what you say, and I'm wondering which is correct. I bought the LP in 1983 and always thought it had to do with the struggles in Northern Ireland. Are there multiple explanations?

.......Shoot the man above me.

MY issue with the song isn't that it's a bad song- far from it. It's the radio edit I hear now and again that completely cuts out the last verse. MAKES PLANES WANT TO SMASH!
