Fell no pain, but my life ain't easy
I know I'm my best friend
No one cares, but I'm so much stronger
I'll fight until the end
To escape from the true false world
Undamaged destiny
Can't get caught in the endless circle
Ring of stupidity

Out on my own, out to be free
One with my mind, they just can't see
No need to hear things that they say
Life is for my own to live my own way

Rape my mind and destroy my feelings
Don't tell me what to do
I don't care now, 'cause I'm on my side
And I can see through you
Feed my brain with your so called standards
Who says that I ain't right
Break away from your common fashion
See through your blurry sight

Out on my own, out to be free
One with my mind, they just can't see
No need to hear things that they say
Life is for my own to live my own way

See they try to bring the hammer down
No damn chains can hold me to the ground
Life is for my own to live my own way

General Comment:This song is about escaping the mindless self-indulgence of today's society, by not being a part of the so-called system, to no longer live your life in redundancy, and to be your own fucking person. Don't live your life like the rest, be out there!

The prison sirens in the background in the end are to strengthen the feeling of escaping, which has a really strong effect if you realise that.

General Comment:No, you ignorant bastard below me, Kill 'em All was made to fight again the 'glam' metal and mainstream shit. Kill 'em All has the FUCK YOU, WE RULE attitude and straight-forward lyrics, being a very fast and furious record to divide the posers from the metalheads. Ride the Lightning has NOTHING to do with fighting glam metal, Metallica just continued their crusade to take over the world by writing deeper lyrics and more complicated songs up until the Black Album, which is where Metallica got their mainstream success from by playing less heavy, and more to the public.

Just by watching one documentary and using a lot of curse words while drafting an angry comment, doesn't make you a 'true' Metallica fan, and stating something simple-minded as "LISTEN TO THE FUCKING SONG YOU POSERS" is just as stupid as saying this song is about killing posers, which you did.
    Hypocrite.

General Comment:You bunch of fucking posers have no idea what this song is about. If you knew anything about thrash metal, you'd know that Metallica was the first and the best of them all. They developed thrash to fight the bullshit but somehow popular "glam" metal which is gone now because thrash destroyed it. People hated thrash at first, and it was completely underground for years, which is why the FUCK YOU attitude is the heart of thrash. Speed, weight, length, lyrics are all subject to making the point: FUCK YOU. This song is a no-shit FUCK YOU to everyone who didn't like Metallica or what they were doing. Actually LISTEN to the song sometime, you bunch of fucking posers.

General Comment:Like all tracks on Ride the Lightning, it's how you can stop something from starting but when it starts you can't stop it. This is about how if you become a loner and don't make friends you'll end up alone.

General Comment:This song is about freedom, and it clearly says you shouldn't do what everyone else do just to fit in the standards of what people consider right.

General Comment:This song sounds kind of poppy compared to the rest of the album and the lyrics are very different for metallica but one of my favourites.

General Comment:I definitely agree--Creeping Death has a fantastic riff.

Despite my preference for the newer Metallica, this is the only Metallica album in which I like ALL of the songs. This is easily my favorite from the album--mostly because I like--I mean REALLY like--songs that depict life in a positive light. Songs that speak of living your own way, ignoring society's rules, empowering yourself, defeating your own demons... This is the music that keeps me going every day. This is the music that keeps me from giving up and becoming another sheep in the flock.

Sounds emo, but that's how it is. \o/

General Comment:Definetly one of Metallica's best songs, better than For Whom The Bell Tolls and Trapped Under Ice anyhow. I see it as being about non-conformity, and living by your own rules and standards, using a prison to represent America's conformist society, and an ecsaping prisoner as the daring non-conformist who challeges it. This is defenitly the most underrated song on Ride The Lighting, and one of Metallica's most underrated songs in general (such as No Remorse, Disposable Heroes, ...And Justice For All, To Live Is To Die, and The God That Failed.)

Just as bonus info, this the my favorites from Ride The Lighting from #1-#8.

1.Fade To Black (Yeah, I know it's cliche, but it's just such a great song that I can't help but call this song the best on the album.)

    2.Creeping Death (Killer fucking riff)

3.The Call Of Ktulu (Excellent guitar and this song has a very interesting origin [Read H.P. Lovecraft's The Call Of Cthulu to know what I mean)

4.Escape (Great song, and as I've said, tragically underrated)

5.Ride The Lighting (Excellent riff and solos)

6.Fight Fire With Fire (A brutal slab of pure thrash metal)

7.For Whom The Bell Tolls (Excellent song, but just a wee bit overrated)

8.Trapped Under Ice (Good, solid song, but nothing particularly special)

    Overall rating:***** out of *****
